A modern acoustic design electrified with a premium preamp.
The NEX body style offers superior sound and comfortable play. The solid bear claw spruce top creates a resonant soundboard while the solid Indian rosewood back and sides project beautifully. The ebony fingerboard has tasteful abalone snowflakes complemented by abalone binding and rosette inlays.
The CTP-1 Cool Tube preamp houses a a 12AU7 dual triode vacuum tube for lush, warm sound. The tube runs at only 2-3 degrees above ambient temperature, so there is no concern over radiant heat. Its tuner can be calibrated from A438 to A445. An LED display reveals the note being played and directs the player with illuminated arrows that show sharp and flat. The EQ section has a shelving graphic EQ for bass and treble and semi-parametric EQ to set the mid point of the midrange frequency. A Cool Tube knob controls the impact of the tube. An auxiliary input jack and volume knob can control an additional add-on pickup of your choice and can accept a magnetic sound hole pickup, or a soundboard transducer. An AUX control knob blends the add-on signal with the Takamine pickup. A switch matches varying outputs of different pickups with the preamp. The output volume slider can then control the blended signal. The CTP-1 is powered by 4 AA batteries, which will deliver approximately 24 hours of playing time.

I love the guitar's looks and build quality. The guitar's action is pretty low and I will probably not have the guitar set-up by a luthier as the factory set-up is very close to perfect. It is nice that the CTP-2 is now the preamp instead of the CTP-1. The Cool Tube has to be warmed up because there is some white noise. After the preamp's tube warms up the noise diminishes but does not go away entirely. I turn the treble down a bit and that helps. Also the sound is a little fuzzy when a chord is strummed hard. The sound is warmer than other preamps. I do not like the sound when a pick is used and prefer finger strumming and picking. Is the Cool Tube as good as a good microphone? No way but you have to know what you are doing and haul around an extra mike or two as well as the stands. I am no sound engineer so I may not have gotten the best adjustments for the Cool Tube. The guitar sounds very good and will open up as the years go by because it is solid wood. Is the guitar loud unplugged? No but the sound is adequate. It is not as loud as my Martin DM acoustic guitar. The unplugged sound is balanced in this Takamine.
This guitar now has the CTP-2 Cool Tube Preamp. The hard case is now the GC500 (made in China) and has a shoulder strap than can be attached. The nut width is 1 3/4" which is nice and wide. (Good for us with bigger fingers)
The guitar's quality is a 10. But because of the case I dropped it to a 9. The case I received had scratch on the back. Also the case is a little bit misaligned on the shoulder strap metal loops. I have to pull the lid toward the front latches to close the case and latch it. Minor issues but they effect the quality rating.
Value would be a 10 if the case was just bit better in build quality. This guitar is a few hundred dollars less than a Martin with an Aura preamp. This guitar's build quality is excellent and the guitar is beautiful.

I own Martins, Taylors, Tacomas and other Takamines and let me tell you this guitar sings. The guitar is top quality all the way and it resonates beyond belief. The preamp is hands down the best available. The cool tube is a piece of genious that must be heard to be believed.I am a professional guitar repair tech and I see every guitar that comes down the pike. This is the one to own if you can only own 1 acoustic. You rarely see these in a store, but if you do you owe it to yourself to try one.

This guitar is breath taking. I looked at Taylors, and Martins, but this guitar beat'em all out in price and sound. Its a dream to play and coupled with my Marshall AS50R, its nothing short of phenominal. Buy this guitar...you won't ever want to play anything else again.
