OVERVIEW

Deluxe Grand Auditorium hybrid with Expression electronics, Venetian cutaway and Sitka spruce/layered koa tonewoods.

The Grand Auditorium 214ce K DLX features layered Indian rosewood back and sides, a Sitka spruce top, a full-gloss body, white binding, Small Diamond fretboard inlay, Venetian cutaway for a steeper slope and easier access to the treble-side frets, Taylor Expression System electronics, and a Taylor standard hardshell case.

Grand Auditorium
Taylor's most popular and versatile body shape, the mid-size Grand Auditorium arrived in 1994 bearing refined proportions that fell between a Dreadnought and Grand Concert. While the bigger Dreadnought was traditionally considered a flatpicker's guitar and the smaller Grand Concert catered to fingerstylists, the GA was designed to deliver on both fronts. The shape produced an original acoustic voice that was big enough to handle medium-strength picking and strumming, yet with impressive balance across the tonal spectrum, especially in the midrange, producing clear, well-defined notes that suited both strumming and fingerstyle playing.

The GA's overall presence tracks well with other instruments both in a studio mix and on stage, and singer-songwriters have embraced its utility both for composing and traveling with one guitar. Many people want a single guitar that can cover a variety of styles, which is why the GA continues to be Taylor's bestselling shape. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the multi-dimensional GA won't let you down.

Forward-Shifted Pattern Bracing

All of Taylor's bracing for steel-string models is a form of X-bracing. The "X" provides a continuous flow of strength from the upper bout to the lower bout, which provides rigidity in spite of the soundhole's location in the middle of the soundboard. The 214ce K DLX moves the X forward, closer to the soundhole and also features Taylor's Relief Rout, a tone-enhancing voicing technique in which a groove is carved along the inside edges of the top. This groove is similar in function to the re-curve on a violin - it "loosens up" the edges of the top, generating extra flexibility without sacrificing structural integrity. The result is increased bass and volume with a balanced tone.

Layered Koa

Like Taylor's other layered wood options, layered koa features an all-wood laminated construction, in this case with interior and exterior layers of beautifully-figured koa veneer separated by a middle core layer of poplar. Though the tonal properties of layered wood aren't as complex as solid wood, the construction method enables Taylor to conserve tonewood resources and offer attractive, durable instruments at a more inviting price. A solid spruce top and Taylor craftsmanship ensure a clear, balanced tonal response.

Expression System

Natural Sound Made Simple
People love the clear, full acoustic tone of their Taylors. Why should it be any different when they plug in? That's why Taylor spent several years developing their own onboard acoustic pickup and preamp. Taylor's groundbreaking Expression System (ES) was designed to naturally amplify the warm acoustic sound of your guitar.

The ES is an all-magnetic acoustic guitar pickup system that works like a microphone to produce a pure signal and a warm, natural acoustic sound. When you plug in, you'll hear the sound of your guitar, not the sound of the pickup. No complicated controls. No tone simulators. Just a clean amplified acoustic guitar sound supported by three simple controls - volume, bass and treble.

Breakthrough Technology

Years of research brought Taylor to a simple realization: Nothing sounds as true and musical as a microphone. With that as a starting point, Taylor's David Hosler led the team responsible for the Expression System's breakthrough technology. Utilizing a unique Dynamic Body Sensor mounted to the soundboard, a Dynamic String Sensor embedded beneath the fretboard, and a discrete preamp, the advanced ES technology is unlike any other guitar pickup system.

Integrated Design
The ES was designed in-house, alongside their acoustic guitars, which allowed them to build the ES seamlessly into the design of the guitar, for an integrated pickup system unlike any other. From the design and location of the body and string sensors to the voicing of the preamp, the ES is fully optimized for the Taylor sound. The elegant design, including the non-intrusive control knobs, also preserves the aesthetic of a Taylor guitar

Comments about Taylor 214ce K DLK Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The second one is perfect. Great looks, smooth easy feel. Play it for hours. The electronics are truly natural, sounded exactly the same through my amp, however this guitar has so much presence I won't plug it in much.

The first one shipped had severe fret buzz. I'Ve done setups, but felt this was going to be a tough one. True to form, MF replaced it without question and quickly.

I was originally looking at the 214ce but a reviewer noted that the delux has a great hardshell case as well as the advanced bracing, then I sprang for the koa. Very pleased I did, relatively small added price for the years of playing!

Comments about Taylor 214ce K DLK Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Ordered this guitar for my son by phone. I really fell in love with the beautiful wood. The shipping was great and it played wonderfully right out of the box (with a little tuning). The sound is really bright and resonates well. In the "youtube" videos I watched the guitar seemed to be "very" bright sounding and this held true.
On the down side Musicians friend has this guitar listed incorrectly which made it very difficult to research it on Taylor's web-site. This is a Taylor 214ce K DLX.
There were 2 very very "minor" surface scratches on the finish, but thankfully they buffed out with little effort.
Unless you make a lot more money than I do in the music business, you will be hard pressed to find someone who can tell the difference between this guitar and some of the 600 or higher series from Taylor. Thanks Musician's friend.

Comments about Taylor 214ce K DLK Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar was awesome right out of the box! The Koa wood looks great and the richness of sound was more than I expected! The action and playability as you move up and down the neck of the guitar is very consistent, exactly what I was expecting from a Taylor Guitar! Thanks to Musicians Friend for offering such a great product!
