The Taylor 414-CE is easily one of the best values out there in acoustic guitars. I was worried about how bright it sounded when I played one at the local guitar store, but I fell in love with how it played so I rolled the dice and ordered one from MF. It was defiantly a bit too bright out of the box, but changing the strings made a huge difference. I also added some Taylor rosewood bridge pins and a bone saddle; two very cheap upgrades. After these minor changes I couldn't be happier! The tone is snappy but not brittle and this thing projects like no other. I knew I would love how it looks and plays but thought I would be settling a bit on the tone; happily, after the changes/upgrades I am just as thrilled with how it sounds. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

I was so excited about buying this guitar. I loved the way the 414 sounded both plugged in and unplugged. The action was nice on most that I played and the Taylor reputation was great.However.....an issue that I hear is becoming commonplace. The high E string was slipping off the fretboard at the 2nd and 3rd fret when ever I did a slight pull off (like at the end of "The Rain Song") and creatiing a horrible sound. I could not live with it. There was also a slight bow in the neck causing intonation issues (not a big deal). My only complaint is the quality control at the Taylor factory should have caught these obvious issues. The nut was not cut properly. The Taylor repair people said it was 'within Taylor specs' so not covered by warranty. As a professional performing artist I could not use the guitar so of course I had some great repair people fix it.

Full spectrum acoustic sound

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

I think I've covered everything about this above, but it is a quality instrument with a fantastic, full and hi-fi sound projection. The Fishman electronics are nice, but what really shines is the acoustic sound of this guitar. The ebony fretboard is beautiful and solid to play on, the Grover tuners are smooth and accurate, the neck and body woods are gorgeous, and the overal playability of the guitar is fantastic.
Mine is a 2002 that has the Fishman Prefix electronics, which is a great little device to have on board. The more expensive models had a little bit more of a sophisitcated Fishman unit, but mine does well. I would give this part a 7, and the upgraded version of the Fishman a 9.

Other features like the binding, the nut, the Grover tuners (which are smooth and accurate), the finish I give a 9. They would get a 10 if the stock string end pegs were something a little fancier than black plastic, but they do their job. The ebony fretboard is beautiful and nice to play on, so an easy 10 there. All things combined make for a strong 9 in features.
Overall the quality of woods and the sound this produces earn it a 9.6 or so, so I'm rounding it up to 10. I've had this guitar for almost 10 years (bought new in the beginning of '03) and it is a quality instrument. Before purchasing, I spent several trips around different stores auditioning many acoustic guitars in the under-$2000 range, and time-after-time this one was the winner. At one of the auditioning sessions, even my wife noticed the difference in sound when I compared it to a Guild. It just has a great tone and beautiful projection of the sound, more robust and bigger/fuller than others I auditioned.
A great value. It isn't cheap, but I assure you this is a quality, well-made and great-sounding instrument for your money.

A Work of Art

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

This guitar was astounding from the first strum, to my last strum yesterday - 3 months later. The maintenence of a guitar of this value is worth the tone that come from every chord, on every part of the neck. Still haven't found a buzzy fret, but make sure you get something like the planet waves humidpaks to keep it at 45%. I still don't understand why someone wouldn't cherish this beautiful work of art. Thank you taylor, you've outdone yourself.

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

This guitar has amazing tone! I was lucky enough to pick up a used 2002 model from a private seller for $900. The treble is very nice but not as overwhelming as it is in the other taylors. Over all very balanced sound and just a pleasure to play! I would highly recommend that you play before you buy this as you should for any guitar.

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

For a guy that has been struggling to teach himself how to play the guitar, this guitar is a HUGE boost for my playing! The action is great and the sound is beautiful. I was struggling with strumming with a pick... not anymore.I'm very picky about quality, very picky! There is not one single flaw in this guitar, not one.Yeah, it's a bit pricey but worth every penny.I absolutely love this guitar!

Crisp, smooth & full sound

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

I went from an Epiphone J200CE to the Taylor 414-CE. The Taylor has a much fuller and richer sound and projects very well unplugged. Sounds briliant running directly through the board with no buzzing. Very crisp, clean sound. The cutaway allows excellent access to those sweet upper octive riffs. An excellent guitar for both rhythm and lead.

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

I have owned this guitar for 4 months and wanted to wait awhile before I posted a review to see if I still felt the same way after a couple of ownership. I love the guitar more now than when I first purchased it. Every time you pick it up and play it you smile because of the tone, intonation and playability of this guitar. When playing out I run through a Peavey xr8600 PA and the sound quality is very impressive. Bottom line is you will be happy if you purchase this guitar.

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

This is the third 400 series acoustic I have owned, I still have a 2006 410e as well, which is a fine guitar itself but this 414ce is a better all around guitar. Like every taylor I've played over a 200 series it is built solid and you can indeed feel that immediately upon picking it up. I played this particular guitar for 2 hours at the music store straight, but I knew within minutes it was the one. The tone is well balanced and the volume matched my voice level nicely, it fits comfortable on the lap and it is my honest opinion that the ovangkal wood is more suited to the singer than rosewood which sounds great but is boomier in ways. This is a fine guitar and worth every penny, and the new upgraded expression system is far better than the one on my 2006 model, it sounds just like the guitar through a good amp, job well done Taylor, for me Taylor guitars suit my playing and writing style and my voice, they are built well and have many advantages over the competition. Bottom line, always play before you buy or you could be sorry. No two guitars are the same, you'll know when you have the one, if any doubt is in mind, you don't have the one.

Great Value

Comments about Taylor 414-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (2011 Model):

Being an active musician for (without dating myself too bad)well more than forty years. I have played both on stage and in studio with both past and present top forty bands. I received the 414 as a thank you gift, and out of the seventy plus guitars I currently own, some well out of the normal price range, when I am on my porch strumming something Townes Van Zandt sent me twenty years ago, I play this piece. Amazing comfort and acceptable sound. Highly recomend this guitar. Buy it!
