OVERVIEW

A smaller body that keeps overtones in check and fits nicely in a mix with other instruments.

On Taylor's 700 Series 712e 12-Fret Grand Concert Acoustic Electric Guitar, the neck meets the body at the 12th fret rather than the 14th, and the bridge position is closer to the center of the lower bout. The result is a splash of extra tonal depth. The classic pairing of rosewood and spruce yields a full-range acoustic voice, while the smaller body keeps the overtones in check and fits nicely in a mix with other instruments. A short-scale 24-7/8-inch neck adds comfort to the playing experience. A Vintage Sunburst top and neck, ivoroid binding and rosette, and ivoroid Heritage Diamond fretboard inlays evoke an old-soul persona. Stage-friendly Taylor Expression System 2 acoustic electronics translate the acoustic dynamics and tonal detail into exceptional amplified tone.

Grand Concert (GC)
Body Length: 19-1/2" / Body Width: 15" / Body Depth: 4-3/8"

The small-body Grand Concert debuted in 1984 to meet the needs of a new wave of adventurous acoustic fingerstyle players. In contrast to the traditionally darker, boomier voices of bigger body styles like dreadnoughts and jumbos, the GC's compact size and tapered waist kept the overtones in check. It was also more comfortable to play while sitting down, and the guitar's slightly wider neck gave players more room for complex fingerings. The GC's smaller sonic footprint also fit cleanly in a mix with other instruments when tracking in the studio and with a band on stage, making it a useful tool for professional session and side players. Our current generation of GC models continues to accommodate fingerstylists with finger-friendly traits like a shorter 24-7/8" scale length, which makes fretting easier and adds a slightly slinkier feel on the strings due to the lighter string tension. If you feel more comfortable with a small body or favor controlled overtones, a Grand Concert is a great option.

Expression System 2
The Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor's ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor's proprietary behind-the-saddle pickup (patent pending), which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before. Together with Taylor's custom-designed "professional audio"-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar.

Behind the ES2 Design: Rethinking the Piezo Pickup
For decades, piezo-electric transducers have been positioned under the saddle of a guitar based on the long-held belief that the string and top vibration cause the saddle to "bounce" up and down. But Taylor's electronics team, led by developer David Hosler, discovered that the vertical movement is actually heavily restricted, and that the saddle gets "locked down" due to the string tension's downward pressure. That's why a traditional under-saddle pickup with piezo-electric crystals often responds with a sound often characterized as thin, brittle, brash or synthetic, especially with more aggressive playing.

The saddle's natural range of movement as the guitar is being played is actually back and forth like a pendulum. That revelation led Taylor's design team to relocate the crystals from under the saddle to behind it. The new positioning enables the crystals to respond more naturally to the guitar's energy as it is transferred through the saddle. Three pickup sensors are installed behind the saddle, through the bridge, with three tiny Allen screws that calibrate the position of the sensors in relation to the saddle.

Like the original Expression System, the ES2 features the same volume and tone control knobs. The preamp is similar but with a slightly different gain structure. As a result it will be about 25-percent hotter, which is more in line with other pickups. This makes it plug-and-play friendly both for artists and live sound mixers.

Comments about Taylor 700 Series 2014 712e 12-Fret Grand Concert Acoustic Electric Guitar:

So what does it take to be my one and only? Easy to play, short scale, excelent tone woods, great tone, silky playability, great tone, and did I mention great tone. Responsive and projects way beyond its size. Looks like a parlor and sounds like a 000.
I had been looking for a 00 for a long time. Tried the CEO 7 and was impressed but really didn't bite me. Went through several others. Then found one at a GC. Hey I am a Martin guy but this one had the prescence of a Santa Cruz or Collings. It was a case of love at first touch. i am sorry I love my Martins but for now I am sleeping with the other.

Comments about Taylor 700 Series 2014 712e 12-Fret Grand Concert Acoustic Electric Guitar:

First off, this is a BEAUTIFUL guitar. I got the light sunburst and the finish is flawless. I have owned and played a number of high end acoustics (Martin D35, Taylor, Gibson J45, Guild) and my 712 promises to be every bit as good or better than all of these. Really like the size (fit) and balance of the instrument. Every fret is right "there" and I really like the neck size as I tend toward chubby fingers and have played mostly finger-style. In fact I've owned her five days and haven't used a pick yet. Tone is balanced and not as bright (or tinny or brittle) as other Taylors I've played. I get the feeling the tone will improve as I break in the guitar. There is a "getting to know" time with any new guitar for me in which I appreciate an instrument more as I play her, or keep coming up against a weakness I can't get through. I'm optimistic I'll appreciate my 712 more down the road. I did plug her in through a tuner and found the intonation is off up the neck. I want to perform onstage with this guitar so I will pay for a pro set up. So I would say I'm not blown away but I'm optimistic my 712 will live up to her promise in time.
