Wasn't love at first sound... but now... SWEETness.

Features:

the 5 way switch is awesome... you can for sure find the sound you're looking for... exp. with the active treble and bass controls.

Quality:

Typical Taylor quality... I own many guitars... from Martin D41 to Taylor 814CE and I wish everyone could adopt the Taylor neck.  Smooth... I love my Martin but if I could, I'd love to merge the Taylor neck to the Martin.  that would be a marriage made in heaven.

Value:

I purchased the T5X... no frills... love the satin finish.  couldn't justify the high cost of a koa when the T5X has the same sound outcome (electricly speaking)  And i'm not buying it for the acoustic capabilities... which are minimal.

Overall:

I purchased my T5 a month ago and have gigged with it twice.  I'm in a band that has a playlist of about 185 songs... everything from James Taylor, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton to the Eagles... all the old time Rock and Roll stuff.  Actually, anything from soup to nuts. We gig at small venues like coffee houses to larger (2000+) street dances.  for gear, I use tube screamer, digital delay, chorus box... and a bit of reverb.  run it through an LR Baggs para DI... PA and Peavey Vypyr.  btw, the PA brings out the acoustic highs.

When I ordered the T5, I wanted something that would play both electric and acoustic sounds with an room for an occasional lead thrown in for spice.  THE PROBLEM was with the 3rd string... I flat out would never stay in tune for me... at my second gig, I got so frustrated right before we went on...I tore off the Elixir G string... and through on a .026 gage electric... this was 10 minutes before we went on. I didn't have time to play around with a (plain) 3rd string... with the stretching and tuning it up.  So, that night the heavy gage 3rd got me through.

BUT, here's your answer... (Bob Taylor)... D'Addario ELX 110W (wound 3rd string) or the EXL 115W.  Before using these strings (with the wound 3rd string) I was so disappointed with the T% that I was considering sending it back.  But, after these strings... I have literally fallen in love with this little gem.  btw, you can still bend the g string, for the Johnny B. Goode leads and the like.  One more thing... the plain G string would on occasion sound so tinny... this also has disappeared.  With the wound G string, the sounds ... both strumming and leads sounds so natural.

now... I love this gutiar... thanks to the wound 3rd string.  Next, I might try the Elixir Extra Lights (.010 - .046) I'm interested what acoustic strings might sound like... yes. I know Bob recommends a different saddle... anyway, if you're still reading ... thanks man...

Need a everything guitar? Worried about a loss down the road? Taylor T5 has you covered. Bob and his staff went over the top on the T5. I own six Taylors. Sold one for twice the original price to buy the T5. 1992 510.. I had two, only reason i sold one.. T5 is expensive, you pay for what you get. If you have the means, buy one. You'll love it.

The Taylor T5 is one of the greatest guitars ive ever played. You may be disatisfied if playing unplugged because volume is low. I prefer it plugged in with an A/B box. Use positions 1 and 2 for acoustic and 3, 4 and 5 for electric. You can use this for anything that requires a guitar. Any T5 will serve you fine but the koa top adds warmness and doesnt look that bad either!

I had been looking for a new guitar for quite awhile.  I didn't know exactly what I was looking for, but when I found the Taylor T5 with KOA top, I knew I had found it! At first, I had thought I might like to have a sem-accoustic guitar, such as a ES-335 or some such guitar.  But the Taylor was an awesome combination of that with an accoustic sound and it played great!  I bought one immediately. The only drawback is that in the 2nd pickup position from the neck, the top fret simply doesn't work.  I had the salesguy call Taylor and he got the run-around saying that it was a "customer preference" that the high E wasn't as loud.  When he called back a 2nd time, they indeed confirmed that the body pickup is mounted directly below the top fret to get the accoustic sound and the in effect rendered the highest fret useless. That being said, I thought it was a good compromise.  The top fret is available for the pickup settings that would need it - mainly electric sounds.  The accoustic and electric sounds are great and I play that more than my PRS now.  I would have to agree that if you want a 100% electric guitar, this isn't it, nor is it a high end Martin.  However, it's a great guitar and I would recommed it to anyone who wants versatility and great sound.
