The Loar

A classic archtop that embodies the sound of traditional jazz guitar.

The Loar's hand-carved, polyurethane-finished archtop cutaway guitar offers an excellent option for traditional jazz guitarists who want to make the classic archtop sound heard clearly for ensemble playing. The Kent Armstrong floating pickup amplifies the sweet natural tone of the hand-carved spruce top, while the Florentine cutaway allows unrestricted access to the upper frets, making the Loar LH-350 acoustic guitar perfect for either soloing or accompaniment.

The archtop cutaway Loar guitar is assembled with a solid hand carved spruce top and maple back, sides, and neck. The guitar's bone nut and compensated adjustable ebony bridge let the sound of the select tonewoods resonate clearly, and the bound rosewood fretboard is both beautiful and durable. The Loar LH-350 acoustic guitar's bound pickguard with a single volume knob adds to the vintage look and feel. The archtop is finished with a meticulously inlaid mother-of-pearl "Fleur-de-Lys" headstock design and a polyurethane tobacco sunburst finish to stay true to classic design and style.

Great Archtop for the price !!

Features:

A tone knob would be nice.

Quality:

It won't compare to fully hand carved guitars 3 to 4 times the price.  HOWEVER, it is the BEST archtop I've seen in this price range.

Overall:

I got this guitar because I wanted to expand my jazz abilities.   Arpeggios, ii-V-I, standards, etc, etc.   I owned an Eastman previously, which was a phenomenal guitar, but waay more than I could afford.   (And waaay more than I was able to play at the time.....)   This Loar is AWESOME for the price.   It plays smooth, and sounds great.   I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I love it.   The single volume knob makes it easy to set up and play.   It would be nice if it had a tone control, but I don't miss it at all.   I just set the amp the way I want it and leave it.   (Tube amp, btw....)   Phenomenal archtop guitar for the price, and very fun to play.   I'm looking forward to trying some different string types on it to see how it responds.   However, the stock set up I received in the mail was great right out of the box.   I noticed a bit of a buzz on the B string up around the 13th fret, and considered raising the bridge on that side a tad.  However, it has gone away with regular playing.   If you're looking for an archtop to work on your jazz chops, I don't think you can go wrong for this price for this guitar.

A real carved top guitar for the price of plywood

Features:

The set of features in the Loar LH-350 are exactly what you want in a guitar like this- a real carved (not pressed) top, a free floaring pickup, and a volume control. Period. No extras to get in the way of a pure tone. It's essentially an acoustic guitar with a pickup system that won't interfere with the vibration of the top.

Quality:

MIne has one tiny flaw- a pickup mounting screw that's off by maybe .05". That's it. Fit and finish are first rate for  a guitar in this price range. The poly finish is thin enough that it doesn't choke the sound. It may not have the depth and glow of a nitrocellulose finish, but it looks pretty good.

Value:

Every other archtop in this price range has a laminated top, or a pressed solid wood top. This guitar not only a a real carved top, it has a Kent Armstrong pickup- not a cheap clone- and good quality hardware. The pot is a quality unit . The tuners are genuine Grovers.

This is excellent value for the $$$.

Overall:

Overall this is simply an outstanding guitar for the money. The carved top means that it's responsive when you play it gently, and yet it doesn't choke when you dig in. Great for anything from acoustic rhythm guitar with .012 or .013 bronze strings to amplified jazz solos with flatwounds, and if you put on lighter strings, blues.
