Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-1C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:
Today I received the Voyage-Air guitar I have been awaiting. The backpack/guitar case had done a good job of protecting the instrument, along with careful packaging from the previous reviewer. The guitar itself is a standard model VAOM-1C, which designates it as an OM size guitar with a soft cutaway at the upper bout. The back and sides are mahogany, which I found quite striking as it shows distinct banding; stripes of dark through the glossy reddish color I expect from mahogany. A simple black strip runs up the back, and the binding is a conservative WBW. On the side with the cutaway, the binding follows the edge of the side where it stops at the neck block. It is very well done and looks sharp. The fingerboard is rosewood with abalone dots for fret markers. At the top of the neck, the peghead is finished in gloss black, which highlights the gold logo and the gold mini-tuners.The tuners are the only part that has given me any trouble, and that is just because I have fairly large hands. The mini-tuners have small black buttons which are closer to the peghead than on my other guitars. This makes it a bit tight for my hands, but I found I quickly adapted to the smaller tuners. The saddle is nicely shaped to provide optimum intonation, and the guitar stays in tune quite well up the neck. The guitar arrived set in a DADGAD tuning, so I re-tuned it to standard. That is where I play most of my music, and where the majority of players do as well. Just like any guitar, re-tuning was quick, but it drifts slightly as I play it. That is completely normal. After the guitar has completely settled in to the ambient temperature and humidity in my music room, I will do some experimenting with the guitar?s ability to hold a tuning through the folding process.I did a bit of recording, comparing the Voyage-Air with my hand-built Indian rosewood dreadnought. I recorded my guitar first, followed by the VAOM-1C. I started with some fingerpicking, and when I reviewed the two recordings I got a bit of a surprise; the Voyage-Air recorded better. Clear, strong bass tones, and crisp trebles with a remarkably smooth transition, very evenly balanced across the strings and up the neck. My dreadnaught is a huge thing, and produces lots of bass, but I have to use a bass cut when recording. The Voyage-Air didn?t need it, I heard no sub-sonics. I then did a piece with some flatpicking and a bit of strumming, and heard the same results. I finished the recording with a song that balanced my fingerpicking with my voice, and the Voyage-Air really seemed to combine better with my voice. I feel this is a guitar that would be welcome in any recording studio. The more I think about the idea of a good guitar that will travel, the more ideas I get. Have you ever tried to ride a bicycle while you carried a guitar? Put it in it?s pack and off you go. I hiked down to the local park with the VA on my back, and still had both hands free to carry stuff. The VAOM-1C guitar is, I believe, fairly representative of the instruments from Voyage-Air Guitars. As such, I would have no reservations on suggesting any of their lines to guitarist, regardless of skill levels. They are well made, with quality components. They are very respectable sounding instruments that show fine craftsmanship, and they are great ?bang for the buck?. The ability to fold up and go with you lifts them up above other guitars of similar build quality and price by providing the guitarist with the ability to take a guitar with them with no compromises. Even in this economy, people travel; and guitarists are no exception. We have probably all had the experience of taking a holiday from work and missing having a good guitar to play on. I think the folks at Voyage-Air have come up with a brilliant idea and design, one that can change a part of your life.
Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-1C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:
The VAOM-1C, a smallbodied mahogany model. The playing experience with this guitar is pretty much exactly like playing any other fine factory-made guitar. It?s extremely comfortable to hold, with a body depth of 3-3/8? at the neck and 4-1/8? at the end pin. The fit and finish are top notch; the tone is rich and satisfying, and it plays very much like a Martin or Taylor in the same price range. Just looking at it, there?s no way in the world you could tell there is anything ?different? about it?and you can?t by playing it, either. The gold-plated ?strap-bolt? does double duty as a slightly oversized strap button, so unless you are paying really close attention, you?d never, ever know it wasn?t a conventional guitar. The premium mini Schaller-style tuners are gold plated with black buttons. With simple tortoise binding and a black and white purfling rosette, it?s lean and clean, simple and very attractiv
