Washburn

Washburn's impressive solid-top design, with Fishman electronics, for a great price.

Washburn introduces the WD10SCE acoustic electric dreadnought guitar with Fishman preamp and tuner, at a price that anyone can afford. This guitar features Washburn's steady craftsmanship, with appointments that you would often find on more expensive guitars.

The 6-string dreadnought guitar features a mahogany body and a solid Alaskan Sitka spruce top, offering rich, clear tone, with plenty of definition with the full-balanced dreadnought projection. The Washburn WD10SCE's mahogany neck, and the rosewood bridge and fretboard articulate each note, while the 43mm nut width, and 16" radius provide comfort for intricate fingerings and progressions.

At the heart of the Washburn WD10SCE acoustic-electric guitar is an impressive electronics system, letting you plug in and amplify your sound with brilliant sound reproduction.

Dressed in a shiny gloss finish and featuring diecast tuners and chrome hardware, this Washburn guitar will stand out in its shimmering beauty, which is only matched by it's celebrated melody.

Bright and chimey

Features:

Pre-amp is good. A lot of wires in there, don't let your hex wrench fall in!  Missing a strap button, but that's an easy fix.  Scary to drill into that nice mahogany, though.

Overall:

As others said, lots of upper mid-range and incredibly chimey.  I like guitars that make me stop playing because I think the phone or the doorbel is ringing.  This is not deep and boomy like a Martin, more like a Gibson.  I was thinking of getting a maple guitar for the top end sound, but this mahogany sings and had more nuance. Loud as all get out.  Good for rock, folk, blues but not a bluegrass guitar.   Shaved a tiny bit off the saddle and cranked the truss rod some and the action was very low for an acoustic.  You can play blues licks on it all day without getting blisters.

Worth Every Dollar

Features:

Good basic features for a guitar of this price. Tuner is ample but not perfect

Quality:

I gave it 10 based on its price point. The quality is amazing for a guitar under $300 but It would not compare in quality to a high end Taylor like some people are claiming, as you might expect.

Value:

You will not find a better guitar in this price range

Overall:

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great low cost guitar. It played great right out the box. However, I would like to have more low end tone, the bass is lacking a bit.

Not what I had hoped for

Features:

The Washburn WD 10SCE Cutaway AE guitar has lots of nice features and details on its specs.  A pick plate and a strap nut would have been nice additions.  It looks pretty and seems to be neatly assembled.

Quality:

I am generally disappointed.  I bought mine in July '11 and noticed the action was pretty high.  But I had a number of family things going on and finally got it over to my luthier (who is very well qualified/certified) for an adjustment/set up today.  Unfortunately, there wasn't much he could do re string height.  He adjusted the nut, but the strings are still pretty high over the 12th and higher frets ... the truss and bridge couldn't be adjusted to fix that.  He said it was due to the way the neck was set on and the bridge was low already. After all the glowing reviews, I am wondering if I ended up with a dud.  If you buy this, I would recommend getting yours inspected pronto upon receipt by your luthier in case you need to return it within the 45 day window.

Value:

Meh.  If it isn't easy to play and you like your old guitars better ... not a great value.

Overall:

I had hoped all the glowing reviews would also be my experience.

I would hope all guitars are set up/inspected prior to shipment as a form of quality control.

Genious Construction

Features:

Loaded.  The onboard tuner is worth having an acoustic/electric even if you never plan on using the onboard preamp.  The tuner is quite accurate for a small unit.  Love the raw neck; fast and cozy.  Love the jack that is seperate from the strap button.  Love the 2/3 cutaway.  Best of every world.

Quality:

I am still in disbelief.  This thing plays with the ease of a Strat.  The sound-hole projection is slightly muddy due to all the internal onboard hardware.  I might have lucked out, but the front panel has a very rich, contrasting woodgrain that is not apparent in the photo.

Value:

Washburn has created a new standard in value for acoustic guitars that I'm sure their competitors will not appreciate.  I am very critical of low priced gear.  I have been seaching for the perfect balance of quality vs. value for 15+ years.  Found it with this gem.

Overall:

This guitar gets a 9 because I give nothing a 10.  I lost a Martin DC-1 in a fire 8 years ago and I would have given it an 8.  The Martin sounded like warm butter (beautiful, better than this one), but the features and playability of this guitar bump it a tick higher.  Last and probably least, the thing is beautiful.  Neck/body binding, headstock inlay, soundhole rosette...  Cant afford a Martin?..  buy this guitar and come out ahead.

It was shipped very quickly ad arrived in pristine condition. After a quick tune-up with the on board tuner, I hit a C chord and could not believe the richness and deep quality of the tone.  I'm so glad I chose this guitar, and very, very pleased with Musiciansfriends high quality service.
