Bluesman462: Don't rate and instrument you do not own. It makes the review worthless and does nothing for your credibility. Now, back to those who speak from experience. I owned and AES1500 form 93-97 and traded it for a 175. Since then I have been searching for something that has the versatility and value of the Yamaha. I've found nothing. After 9 years searching for something that can handle everything from Soul to Rock to Jazz (BeBop to Contemporary), I am ordering my second one; and this time, I plan on keeping it!!

The pickup selector is cheap. It doesn't sound that bad not plugged in though. Really, you shouldn't buy this guitar, and there's a reason it looks a Gretsch, that's what it Yamaha wishes it was!

AES1500B Rocks

I love this guitar! I picked up mine almost two years ago, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. It's one of the cheapest, quality archtops I've come across. It also is full on features with coil taps for both pickups. You can't touch a Gibson or Gretsch for anything near the price. (I got a much better price locally than that on Musician's Friend. It was a special order item that the target buyer refused.)

So good I bought 2 off

By T_2_GOO

Must admit out of all the guitars that I own, this is my favourite. Plays like a dream after setting up to suit the individual player. Very flexible in tone range from clean to dirty and finish is excellent. fact is that so impressed that I bought another in a different colour. Not as good a feel as the first all Black model but still a great guitar.

If you don't own it don't review it!

By You will never guess.

from S.L.C.

I have owned this beauty for about 9 months now. The split coils give this guitar a tonal range that will keep me from switching guitars halfway throughout a set because of limited tonal ranges others have.Don't listen to any who hasn't expiremented with what this can do!

Excellent, finish, feel, sound, and craftmanship.

In the forty-plus years, of playing guitar, I have never played a more enjoyable, and pleasing guitar. It fits my southern, country gospel perfectly.

Ask me a question

I have two ES 335's, an ES 135 and an ES137. I also have a PRS Hollowbody II.I REALLY dig the archtop tone and vibe. That said I can't really fault anything on this instrument. Like all Yamaha instruments it is very well made and does what a guitar should do. BUT, it's like everything else made in Japan..think Camry...it is completely engineered and durable but it lacks vibe and character. I can't get inspired at all playing this guitar. Since tone is a personal thing I can say that I can feel my Gibson ES guitars, my PRS rocks...I just think people who make guitars in the USA are the best..they get it..this is after all the birthplace of all modern music...let's keep it here..the Asian market has taken everything else ..

Yamaha AES-1500B

By Anonymous

Contrary to ads, this has a 25 1/2 inch neck. Excellent workmanship and binding quality, including F-holes. Neck is quite fast and will play with low action. Best played (blues)with .10-.46 strings. Stays in tune beautifully, in spite of Bigsby, and tuners are smooth. Very good sustain, almost no feedback at high volumes. Push-push coil taps on tone controls allow both single and double coil sounds from either pickup - more than doubles versatility. High output for amps, and broad range of tones. Slight problem with pickup selector switch - occas. noisy or imprecise switch - poss. due to pressure from top of case? Pick guard slightly wobbly at top (string) side due to lack of support. I wedge a little soft shim to help stop motion - I am afraid to screw in case changes resonance. Adjust technique to avoid strings hopping out of saddles if you adjust the bridge as low as I do (this Bigsby does not have the hold down bar ahead of the tailpiece)- strings cross at a shallow angle. (I loop a tiny wire over the string and around the intonation screw and solves problem.) This guitar is truly a bargain, and hard to put down every night. Had over a year (black version) and playing 36 years. Terrific for blues/jazz/rock. I play it more than my Gibson L.P. Std. and have several other guitars.
