OVERVIEW

The APX series has always placed emphasis on playability, stylish thin body profile and cutting edge electronics. The Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar (12-string model) offers upgraded cosmetics, solid Sitka spruce top, revamped A.R.T. preamp and the same exceptional playability.

This APX shines on stage. With its ultra-comfortable thin-line body and slim, fast neck the transition from electric guitar could not be easier. All-new color variations and updated inlays make sure APX looks as good as it sounds.

Case sold separately.

APX Soundhole: Oval
The instantly recognizable APX soundhole thickens lower-mid response and gives a more strident, open low end.

APX Body Depth:
80-90mm (3 1/8" - 3 9/16")
APX's thin-line body combines incredible comfort, easy top-fret access and a sound perfectly suited to on-stage use with bright, clear mids, balanced highs and controlled lows. Specially designed non-scalloped X-type bracing allows the guitar's top to sing and maximizes the resonance of the unique body shape for a full, natural tone. With dynamics, sensitivity and clarity built into the design from day one, APX is a guitar not to be underestimated.

A.R.T. (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) technology
Yamaha electric acoustic guitars have consistently used piezo pickups to reproduce the pure sounds of the acoustic guitar. But piezo pickups tended to overreact to changes in attack, which in turn caused distortion. To achieve ideal playability, we had to improve the way that these dynamics were controlled.

To provide a solution to this issue, the new pickup was designed with a multilayer structure consisting of six layers of different materials. This dampens excessive vibration from the soundboard while picking up small resonances to achieve ideal sensitivity and outstanding dynamic balance. Also, because the pickup is fitted directly beneath the soundboard, it functions as a transducer attached to the body.

System 64
System 64 is an original preamp system newly designed and developed by Yamaha's guitar development team. The 1-way system incorporates two contact pickups mounted inside of the body underneath the saddle. Best matching between guitar and pickup was obtained through numerous trials using a number of voice variations in order to produce the most authentic acoustic tone possible. The system is powered by easy to obtain AA-size batteries that provide a stable power supply for improved sound quality. The system also includes a high-precision tuner.

Upgraded styling and specification with the exclusive ART pickup system.

I own several six string instruments, but this is the first 12 string to my collection. I am very happy with the choice. I did a lot of research, and played several different brands and I would always keep coming back to this one. What did it for me: Smooth and easy is to play. Many 12 strings may get a bit tiresome after a while, and depending on the brand the tension of the strings can be very punishing on the instrument AND your hands. I can play thing thing for hours with no problem, and it stays in tune surprisingly long, even when I get spirited with this thing. I use it mainly as a rhythm guitar, not much bending going on with this. The preamp, with the incorporated tuner is such a great convenient tool. Speaking of that, I've met some people that like to have the strings in this model doubled up for their music style -- such as "norteño music" (instead of the traditional octave type), and neck & bridge seems impervious to the added tension. I don't plan to do that, but I am happy to know that I have that choice. I went with the black finish, and it is gorgeous. It is nice when you open the case (I paired it with the Yamaha APX Vinyl Hardshell Guitar Case -- it fits perfectly) all your friends get that "wow" factor. It sounds amazing unplugged, just loud enough to be a pleasant compliment to not-amplified vocals. Once you plug her in, this thing is a monster! Amazing, crisp professional sound! The tones are controlled, there is no distortion when you need to get that "forte" emphasis to the song. I haven't had any feedback problems, even though it actually comes with a convenient sound-hole cover. And the answer is no, it will not diminish the sound quality if you use the cover, especially plugged in. For the price, you're definitely purchasing a guitar that is much, much better than more expensive models. Trust me, the pictures do not make her justice at all, this is a gorgeous professional level instrument.

I ordered an open box guitar at a discount. It was the Black one. When I opened the box I found the documentation and the batteries for the electronics loose in the box. It didn't come with the sound hole cover either. This guitar had been played as the pick marks below the sound hole were obvious. This guitar was not a 2nd but more like a 3rd. I called to return it and decided to order a brand new one in Natural. I would really like to see a pick guard for this instrument but the sound hole is oval so I would need to buy one and modify it to fit. I received the new one and it seems fine but the jury's out on the playability until I get it set-up by some pro techs. Then I'll follow up with another review.

Comments about Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased scratched and dent for under half price. The guitar is amazing. I have many guitars and this has become my daily player. The guitar arrived with the neck straight and needing tuning. The action was too high for my desire so I removed and lowered the saddle by about 2mm and fortunately brought down the action to where I like and I created not buzzing so no fret work needed.

Comments about Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is probably all it was designed to be and also probably perfect for an electric player who just wants to throw a little 12 string into their set-list. It plays like an electric. It is well put together and has all the appeal of a much more expensive guitar. However, it is a thin body design. "Thin" being the key word, that's exactly what you get from the ambient sound of the guitar. It can be EQ'ed to sound thicker in an active environment, but that's not what I look for in an instrument. The tight neck feel also was not to my liking.

Comments about Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Arthritis in my right shoulder made it necessary to look for a thinner 12-string than I had. Yamaha's guitars always sounded far above their prices, so I gave this a try. This guitar feels and plays fantastic, and sounds much better than my old full size Fender. I cannot recommend this guitar high enough.

Comments about Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This was advertised as "used, grade 2." I'd call it "like new." It came in the original packing with hang tags and the soundhole cover/truss rod wrench. I'd guess it was a trade-show demo. Setup was good-to go. I'm a Yamaha fan anyway, and this model was as good as expected. The onboard tuner works well. For a thinline, the tone is full and rich. I've had so much fun playing it acoustic that I haven't gotten around to plugging it in yet - but if my experience with Yamaha piezos is any indication, it'll be just fine. Ordering from MF was easy, and delivery very fast.

Comments about Yamaha APX700II-12 Thinline 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've owned a Gibson B25-12 since I purchased it new in 1967! So I'm comparing the Yamaha 700II-Thinline to a "vintage" Gibson I've played for many years. The Gibson is tough on the fingertips - a difficult instrument to play with a fairly wide, chunky neck.

The Thinline has been in my sights for more than a year now, and I finally figured it was time to give it a try. I guess I didn't expect much, and even though reviews were mixed, I figured without amplification it would be on the quiet side. I was wrong about that. The volume is more than sufficient unplugged.

The black version is really beautiful - it's mirror-like! Not a blemish on it, and the inside shows careful workmanship. The luthiers who worked on this really cared about the final product.

The sound is great, and it compares favorably to my vintage Gibson. In terms of comfort and playability, the Yamaha wins, hands {fingertips) down.

Over many years I've become pretty good at tuning a 12-string, and I rarely use an electronic aid even though I have a bunch. The built in tuner works very well, but I haven't had a chance to assess the amplifier. The guitar comes with a wrench for truss bar adjustments, and they include a heavy rubber - OVAL- sound hole cover to reduce any feedback (it requires some care to install and remove).

I'm pretty sure that I'll hang on to my Gibson, but I probably won't play it as much as the Yamaha. I'm really enjoying this new 12-string.
