To the first time guitar buyer I say: If your interest is in country, folk or any contemporary music you would be better served by one of Yamaha's steel stringed acoustic guitars.

My string action gauge tells me that right out of the box the guitar was set up close to perfect. There is marginal room for improvement in both the string action at the bridge and the intonation. In my opinion it is so close that it isn't worth paying a luthier even a modest fee to the make adjustments. Just to make it clear, string action at the nut and relief in the neck were perfect.

I'd have liked to have seen more fret marks than just the one for the 7th fret on the side of the neck. In the long run it is irrelevant.

Other than that fit, finish, tone, and playability are all one could ask for.

The Gigmaker Package is a very cost effective purchase. The gig bag is very nice, though I bought a hard case as getting the guitar in and out of the bag is cumbersome and in daily use repeated in and out of the bag will likely result in scratching the finish or snagging a string on the zipper. The DVD is a valuable learning resource and introduction to guitar inspite of not at all having anything directly related to classical guitars. It is much better suited for acoustic and electric. The tuner is functional and comes with the plus that it tells you which E, A, D, G, or B you're tuning too, but I don't use it because the spring for the clamp is irritatingly stiff when I go to mount it on the headstock. I keep it as a spare.

All and all a great value and a good guitar. I'd give the guitar 4.9 stars and the package 4.5 stars.

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

I play this at my office during lunch time. It is quiet enough to play, get good tone and not bother others. I was surprised at the good sound for a lower end guitar. I did look at a video showing how Yamaha guitars are built in China and it showed good quality control. Well worth the price.

Great entry-level classical guitar

By DWC

from Virginia

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

This is a great entry-level guitar. Given that it's a classical guitar, the nylon strings are easier on the fingers for new players (something that more people should consider, IMNSHO). The sound and tone are great for such an inexpensive instrument. The only thing I've ever done is replace the strings with some D'Addario EXP45s. Although I have a higher-end classical now, the C40 will always stay around as my backup.

    Yamaha C40 Classical

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

I have owned this guitar for about four years now. It was my first guitar and I love it. I had the option of going for a dreadnought acoustic, but I chose the Yamaha C40 because of it's smaller size and deeper bass. Keep in mind, this is a Classical guitar, not a dreadnought, so the neck is thicker and harder to play on. In the four years I've had this guitar, I haven't had any tuning problems with it. I am yet to replace anything but the strings on this guitar. One day I installed a LR Baggs iBeam Pickup in it and it sounds awesome amplified. Good luck on choosing.

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

    Super fine
When I unpacked it I was sure they sent the wrong guitar, It's beautiful . My wife likes it in the living room on a stand It looks that good. Sounds very good with a warm tone, no frets buzz, Good tuners that seem to keep tune well ( it take a couple of days to stretch the new string ) . By a shark tuner for a few bucks that stays on and put the pitch pipe in the junk drawer, it works just faster the other way. The DVD is very good and with youtube videos it all you need for a good start. I paid a for a stand so thats it. Plays great, looks great ,stay tuned, and didn't cost much and when I looked at the other guitar today I didnt want to trade it in for any of them.

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

GREAT guitar for the money. An excellent beginner-intermediate instrument for the classical student. I have since replaced the tuners, replaced the factory plastic nut with a new bone nut, and replaced the factory plastic saddle with a new bone saddle. I only wish that these features would have come with the guitar. Otherwise, it has good response and was built well.

Comments about Yamaha C40 Gigmaker Classical Acoustic Guitar Pack (Natural):

I purchased this guitar as a gift for my daughter knowing that the other options available were more expensive and no better. As a professional guitarist, I am impressed by three things: playability, sound and appearance. The C40 works for me in all of these categories. If you are looking for a folk or classical guitar and you are on a budget, go for it.

I gave this guitar as a gift to a senior citizen who was interested in taking up guitar. (He had played violin since childhood.) He said it was the nicest gift he ever remembered receiving. Friends, experienced players, who have played the guitar have been very impressed, and were all the more so after learning the price. The package deal with the gigbag and electronic tuner is s screaming bargain.
