Again, it is all in the context of the price you are paying, If I had the money, I would buy something like the Yamaha LL16 in the six string version. If you are starting out, this is the model for you. Do replace the saddle with Tusq or bone, and the bridge pins with Tusq.
I am rating this perfect for features, figuring in the context of the price. For true perfection, it would have a solid mahogany or rosewood back and sides, Engelmann spruce top, and maple binding. Hey, such a guitar would cost a bundle.
I bought this Yamaha FG700S for a young woman who coulnd't afford a guitar. It sounded "OK," but not outstanding. I knew I didn't want to pay more for something better. Then I replaced the saddle and bridge pins with Tusq, and the strings with D'Addario EXP 80/20 bronze light gauge. I was really blown away. This thing sounds wonderful now.
The string height was good from the factory.I think I lowere it very slightly when I fitted the new Tusq saddle.
Made in Hangchou, China... see the Yamaha factory video on YouTube... awesome quality production, all wood dried two years, etc. The finish is flawless. The wood is OK, but there is a small "swirl" in the top wood in the left upper bout. Another FG700S had the same thing. Straight grain in the top is usually preferred. The Yamaha FG720S had straight grain, but with Martin SP phosphor bronze strings and Tusq saddle & pins, didn't sound as good, in my opinion.(This instrument might sound best with the 80/20 broze strings.)
Hint: I am finding that Yamaha is a top value, but I would buy the very best Yamaha model you can possibly afford. I bought their FG720S-12 12 string guitar, and it was very good, but inferior in sound to their Professional version, the LL16-12.
Neck Set Angle: OK. All Yamaha guitars I bought are set so the saddle has less clearance above the bridge (2mm clearance for the high E string).
For what you are getting, this is the best bang for the buck. You really have to check out the videos on YouTube to see why. The other models are made in an inferior Chinese factory (check out Ibanez Guitar Factory...), while this is made in a state of the art factory custom built by Yamaha, with workers trained by Japanese.

I have been playing for a year and a half, and my I went over to my friends house and he cant play but he has this guitar. So I picked it up and tuned it, and 30 minutes later all the strings were wayyyy to high so it goes out of tune a lot I also wasn't into the feel, it felt kinda cheap. This is good for someone who is just starting but other then that this guitar isn't really worth it.

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:
this is a very good cheap guitar...but it DOES Not
compare to a Martin or Taylor!!! I don't care if you change the nut and saddle to bone...and put Elixir nanowebs on it! Solid wood guitars sound better the any laminate out there!
That being said, this guitar is awsome for the money.
I do agree with most folks here that just a few changes can make this a better guitar, but come on
"sounds a good" as a Martin D28????

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:
Out of the box this guitar sounds great, but with a few modifications it will blow you away. Do yourself a favor and buy a blank bone saddle and carefully sand it to match the current saddle profile, maybe lower the action if needed. Once installed, the tone will be a bit more even with a little less mids and accentuating the highs. Install some Elixir nanoweb light strings for an even greater refinement. Then take a hair dryer and and credit card and slowly remove the pick guard. Again the guitar will get louder and be more responsive. I waited 3 years to remove mine and the wood underneath is a bit lighter. If you are really brave, use a green scotch brite pad on a palm sander to dull/thin down the finish on the front and back of the guitar. Most people will turn away here. No more warranty. No resale. But if your looking for a great guitar for cheap, you all ready know this is as cheap as it gets. Might as well go for great. I've been a musician for 20 years and I can tell you that this guitar sounds every bit as good as my 2006 solid wood Taylor 214e. I do understand there are differences between an OM and Dread sound. My wife who sings beside me and has a great ear will also pick the FG700 in a blind A/B sound test. I installed a Martin Gold Plus pickup in mine and use it as a stage guitar. The dull finish looks great by the way, think epiphone masterbilt look. Nice sheen and more expensive looking. I believe the thick poly finish really dampens the sound of this guitar. This review is not for everyone but I believe you will be as pleased as me with your purchase.

This guitar sounds better than some guitars costing three times as much. I have owned two of these, I sold the first one and realized what a mistake. I just bought a another new one. My new one is as great as the first one. I'm keeping this one.

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:
Summary: High quality for price, great sound, easy playing! Love it.
I read the reviews here and elsewhere and they were right on. This is a very nice sounding quality guitar for the price. Worth every penny. It looks nice too. I got the sandburst because it looks more interesting. It has a very nice sound through the entire range. It is a bit trebly/tingy. Sometimes I hear a vibration near the bridge depending on how hard I strum (using pick). I plan to upgrade the pins with TUSQ. That's easy to do and a popular upgrade. Maybe the bridge and nut later but I really think it's fine the way it is and I don't get paid to play anyway.
I bought this to have an acoustic laying around for more flexibility practicing. I mostly play electric. I had a big dreadnaught before and it was very difficult to play. This one is easy-going on the fingers and the neck helps make it easy to play.
I bought the Gator G-Slinger-Dread Padded Dread Slinger Gig Bag (MF Item #: 546177000000000) with it. It just barely fits lengthwise and I do not like the pressure it puts on the neck. I do not plan to use it much and I think I can stretch it out to fit better. Otherwise that bag is very nice and also a good price.

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:
I was skeptical of this guitar when I saw the low price. However, I was looking for something cheap to take on the road knowing it was going to get banged up. I looked at several Fenders (tim armstrong, t-bucket, DG8S). I also looked at Epiphones, and Ibanezes in a higher price range at the store. After messing with them all, I went back home went online and I took a chance on this one. After a bit of negotiation with the seller I got it a little cheaper than the advertised price.
When it arrived, it looked much better than I expected it to look. I tuned it and strummed it and was pretty impressed. After messing with it a bit I started thinking it was better than my washburn WD10SCE, so I started playing them side by side and still thought it better sounding than my washburn. I even had my fiance listen in case I was just being crazy (she has no knowledge of guitar brands) and she thought the yamaha sounded better as well. I was still using the strings that came with it. So I'm guessing I can probably get some more out of it.
Action is similar to my washburn, seems about right. Construction quality seems to be about the same as my washburn as well. However, the sound out of this guitar is way better. I am actually now considering selling my washburn and buying a few more of these.....

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:
I'll just start this out by saying I'm a beginner. I took a class back in high school but hated it and came out feeling just as clueless as before. The guitars they supplied us were constantly out of tune, ugly, and had an extremely high, uncomfortable action.
I received the FG700s in the Sandburst finish, and have none of the problems as the guitar from back then. Even though they're both "beginner" guitars, this Yamaha is leaps and bounds better. I love the finish (though not a huge gloss fan), the tune stays well, and in my opinion, the action is low enough. I think one of the keys to learning guitar is having an instrument you can actually enjoy playing; within the first week I've already got 4 or 5 chords down and can spend more time learning than fidgeting with tuning.
To my untrained ear the Yamaha's tone is great, and reading some of the other reviews, I'd have to agree with the fact that it can fit many roles. It's good for newbies and old pros alike. The FG700s is simply a good guitar for the money.
