Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ16 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:
Addendum to my previous LJ16 review
With a tusq saddle and Elixir strings, I was getting a ring when I played the B string, and to a lesser extend, the high E. I changed the saddle to a Bob Colosi West African ivory saddle (a little less bright than Tusq, but more bright than bone), and changed the strings to Martin Lifetime Phosphor Bronze light gauge. That was a great help concerning the annoying ring, and gives the instrument more of an open sound, with more sweetness. Incidentally, Tusq bridge pins (which I use on all my instruments) give a brighter tone, so with a string giving an annoying ringing, you might change that one bridge pin to Ebony. For those who are deciding whether to get the dreadnaught versus the jumbo model… I compared my JL16 to my Larrivee D03-R dreadnaught, both with the same saddle and strings. and I actually like the JL16 better. the Larrivee has more overtones, but the LJ16 has a more beautiful, focused tone. My Larrivee is 11 years old, played-in, and opened-up in sound, so a new dreadnaught instrument would be a bit closer to the JL16 I assume. One consideration is that when the JL16 ages, if it opens up more in sound, and mellows out a bit, it will fall into perfection. A dreadnaught that ages may perhaps become woofy and lose some beautiful crispness. The outcome: I like the Yamaha LJ16, and still recommend it.

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ16 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:
Review of Yamaha Professional LJ16 guitar
The Yamaha LJ16 has a lower bout of 15 5/8 inches, upper bout 11 3/4 inches, depth of upper body 4 inches, lower body 4 7/8 inches. Purchased from MusiciansFriend as used, condition two. The original owner was apparently offended by the action that was so low that the upper strings were ringing on the frets, and thus returned it. What a mistake he made in giving up on this guitar! Totally brand new in appearance, except the protective paper on the strings was not included; the string label was still attached. The pick guard still had the protective plastic covering, with even that having no scratches from a pick. I installed a Planet Waves Tone Port in the sound hole, removed the plastic saddle and bridge pins, and replaced them with Tusq. The strings were replaced with Elixir 80/20 bronze medium tension Nanoweb strings, tuned down three frets. This is a very bright instrument, and it comes into its own in this configuration… and still has good projection. (The resulting sound quality makes this guitar compete head on with the top-of-the line Tacoma JR55 sitka/rosewood 17 inch lower bout jumbo that I just sold for three times what I paid for this Yamaha!). I also compared it to my Guild GAD JF30 maple-backed 16 1/2 inch lower bout jumbo, and I prefer this Yamaha!. At full pitch or tuned down one fret, it would be a nice finger picker… really crisp. Tuned way down, you enter the big jumbo rich sound, without excessive brightness. If you don't buy this model, go for the Yamaha LL16 dreadnaught, and don't tune it down quite as low. I have the LL16-12, and it's a wonderful 12 string. I believe this instrument and the LL16 model is stiff competition for any Taylor or Martin, and it sounds better, as I remember the tone, than the Taylor GS8, while costing one-fourth the price!
Conclusion: The Yamaha LJ16 is a winner. If you want a bit less clarity of sound, buy the Yamaha LL16 dreadnaught. Either way, you will be happy. Try my set-up.
Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ16 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:
Overall this guitar is a great value for the price. I would recommend it to anyone from beginners to advanced players. It has a beautiful deep tone and is well constructed.
This guitar arrived in a beautiful canvas hard shell case. I was expecting a cheap gig bag but I was pleasantly surprised. The guitar itself is well crafted with real wood. The craftsmanship is flawless. It has a beautiful tone to it and is a joy to play. I am very happy with the purchase and feel it's a great guitar for the money.
Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ16 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:
Just purchased this guitar yesterday and was completely blown away. I like so many others got sucked into the martin/taylor style of thinking, but its more about the wood. solid rosewood back and sides and solid spruce top sounds absolutely incredible. Such a well balanced sound with thunderous lows and beautiful mids to highs. If you were to buy a martin or taylor with this combination AND in a jumbo size youd be in the more expensive ball park. The only negative is it has a plastic nut/saddle/pins but this can be easily replaced with bone.this guitar demolishes all competition!
Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ16 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:
AFter replacing plastics with bone, the Yamaha LJ16 is a treat to play. Two hour sessions a night are very enjoyable. I look forward to moving up the Yamaha line into the LJ26 and LJ36 based upon this basic guitar's reward. Musicians Friend doesn't carry the two top models it appears. Wide neck better for my thick fingers. Not the rich bottom of a Martin but very sweet in its mid to upper range for this medium sized jumbo. Finger pickers woill enjoy it...but it responds very well to my flat pick. Provides a great accompaniment to Keith Urban and John Mayer music.Go for it. quality solid wood and perfect finish. Not sure about the warranty coverage however. They do respond to questions on the Yamaha web site. MF seems a bit overpriced on these compared to smaller retail outlets...come on guys and gals, tune in to the good news.
