Hand selected materials, handcrafted construction - at an amazing price.

With a solid Engelmann spruce top, rosewood body, multilayered mahogany/rosewood reinforced neck, and ebony fretboard, the Yamaha LS6 acoustic guitar can be judged an excellent deal on materials alone. Yet where this concert body really shines is on the strength of its handcrafted construction by expert Japanese luthiers. Every step in the creation of this excellent musical instrument, from tonewood selection to and-sanding the frets, is done in a small factory by master craftsmen.

Body top
Most manufacturers are using Sitka spruce tops for their high end models. In Yamaha's experience, Engelmann spruce (Canada) naturally suits the role for top woods better than any other. The overriding quality for body top material is an allowance for resonance and Engelmann spruce has this attribute in abundance. It is a light wood that is easy to work and enables a good tone response with a wide harmonic range. Visually Engelmann spruce is comfortable on the eye and its opaque light yellow tint is reminiscent of a mature acoustic instrument.

Back & side
Yamaha uses rosewood for both the back and sides on all the L series models. The rosewood blends extremely well with the Engelmann spruce top. It disperses resonance evenly and effortlessly.

Neck block
The neck block reinforces the neck joint. Yamaha has improved the conventional C block design by enlarging the surface area that is in contact with the top of the guitar. The block securely meets the underside of the top adding a real depth to the tone of the instrument.

X-bracing maps out the vibration patterns of the guitar. Each of the eight braces has been carefully positioned in order to bring out the tone in a balanced fashion and find a natural harmony with the guitar's tone woods.

Multilayered reinforced neck
Traditionally, an acoustic guitar neck is carved from a single timber block. As the grain of the timber has to be angled at about 14 degrees to accommodate the headstock, it leaves itself vulnerable to excessive stress. To alleviate the potential of neck movement over time, Yamaha has introduced multilayered necks.

The LS6 model features a strip of rosewood set into the center of the mahogany neck. Rosewood has been chosen for its rigidity and the way it complements mahogany tonally.

The unique larger bridge on the LS6 provides a more efficient transfer of the string vibrations to the body of the guitar, giving a tight, clear midrange and a full, balanced tone. Handcrafted with chamfered edges, the bridge design offers a perfect balance of tone, comfort, and style.

Yamaha have over thirty years experience of crafting quality steel string instruments by hand. Today's L series guitars are a testament to the decades of that extensive research and development work.

Yamaha design themes center around the following points:

A balanced tone and response. The ultimate goal. Bass and treble must complement each other, encouraging inspiration from the guitarist rather than compensation.

Dovetail neck joint. Since the '70s, Yamaha have adopted a unique dovetail neck joint. This particular joint gives the guitar the excellent surface to surface (neck to body) contact. In the joint there is nothing but timber. This enables and indeed encourages resonance flow from the neck to the body, aiding the achievement of a balanced tone and response.

Blending of woods. Yamaha's experience of blending quality woods ensures that the highs are really sustained and note texture is under maximum control at all times by the player.

Body Designs. Yamaha's original L series has shoulders that are slightly more slender than a standard dreadnought design and the body has been designed to be subtly wider. This gives the guitar a more definite tone.

Lacquer expertise. Without a doubt, one of Yamaha's most significant strengths. They work very closely with lacquer manufacturers. The focus being less is more. Specially developed finishing materials, unique to Yamaha are used on handcrafted models. Ultimately, this gives the guitar every chance to breathe and tonally shine. A good acoustic guitar must feel alive and not simply just sound good! Case sold separately.

A best buy

Comments about Yamaha L Series LS6 Concert Acoustic Guitar:

Sometimes when you buy something you get the feeling that you just ripped someone off. That's the feeling many people seem to get with Yamaha guitars. The LS6 is no different. I was initially worried about the low end and strum-ability with the smaller body size, but my fears were averted the first time I really hit it hard. Easy to handle, easy to play, light, great for gigging, versatile with a big, big sound. And a nice case to boot! Great price for a great guitar. Entry level Martins, Taylors, etc. at the same price don't hold a candle to this guitar. A great value for the woods used and care taken in assembly.

Its a Keeper - L Series LS6 Concert Acoustic Guitar

By Dennis Ward

Comments about Yamaha L Series LS6 Concert Acoustic Guitar:

This is a wonderful guitar for the price. Honestly, this was not my first choice - but it was my final choice. I have not sent it out for a setup yet - but I can tell you that it has a very balanced sound and projects well - literally -- right out of the box. The only issue I have is that my daughter has now decided it looks cool and she wants to learn how to play it.... Everyone who has played seems to really like it as well....even the folks who typically play a narrower neck. I am looking forward to see how the top opens up over time...
Basic features (read them from web site description). I love the fact that they shipped this with a guitar case - one less thing to worry about. I will play out the strings that were shipped with it before switching to my preferred brand and switch to a bone saddle and pins. I was looking for a practice backup to my Larrivee OM that gets played quite a bit. Similar specs except the string spacing by the bridge seems a bit tighter than what I am used to. This was good and bad... It made playing with a pick (as I sometimes do..) a bit easier. Fingerpicking - took a couple days to get used to - but its no big deal I find I really like the neck---1 3/4. The body is deeper than my Larrivee OM and the volume was surprisingly loud. I tuned it in the afternoon - took it to a session - and it was still in tune hours later - after some heavy playing. 2 other players at session were very surprised at the guitar for the price.
A very high quality guitar for the price. Looks great, Rosewood is a nice touch, Top notch. Now, its not a 2k guitar - but it looks and plays better than its price. I could find not a thing to complain about.
Great value. If you are looking for your first OM guitar, its a great option at the price. If you are looking for a backup without breaking the bank (as I was) - this is also a great option. I like the fact, I can play out with a solid guitar, sound good and not have a heart attack if someone wants to try my guitar or stands a bit too close...

Comments about Yamaha L Series LS6 Concert Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar had a great feel out of the box. It has a very bright tone, which is perfect for finger picking. Using most plectrums will result in a very thin sound. The neck binding is a different color than the body and headstock binding- it looks a bit off when you look closely. Great guitar for playing around the house, and a surprisingly pleasing tone when played with fingers.
