DON'T buy this if you are looking for another guitar! This is NOT a guitar, but a MIDI controller that is built like a guitar. Lot's of reviewers obviously didn't pay attention to that fact before they bought it.
The built in sounds aren't that great, but you can plug it into your amp and practice with them to get used to the feel of the controller before recording. Playing through an amp is a great way to make sure you have it setup properly for your playing style.
DO buy this if you are a guitar player who hates trying to make music in their DAW or music software with a keyboard controller. It won't play exactly like a guitar, but it's close enough to lay down great tracks right away. It's easy to adapt to the whammy bar and modulation joystick. I can do better parts with this guitar controller than I could in the last 10+ years with a keyboard controller (or decades before with a synth or piano). I can't develop the speed with keys that I can with a stringed instrument.You Rock makes this easy and affordable.
You can plug into a synth module or a synth with a 5-pin MIDI cable (not included), or go directly into your computer with a USB cable (included). You Rock has thankfully chosen to use a standard mini USB jack so you don't have to buy a weird expensive cable if the included cable breaks.
Overall, I think this is the best guitar MIDI solution to be had for the price for home recording applications! You will need to read the manual to get the most out of it, but it works well for what it is.
Just remember - it is a guitar MIDI controller - not a guitar!
The You Rock Guitar is loaded with more features than I will use. I could care less about using it for video games, but as a MIDI controller it is exceptional! I set it up in less than a minute in Reason 6, and it has never had an issue since then. That said, the onboard sounds are pretty much useless as this product really shines when used to control software instruments.
As a guitar player for 30+ years I always struggle with MIDI keyboard controllers. Now I can plug in the You Rock Guitar and play what I want to hear without having to figure out where it is on a keyboard. Make sure you download the setup software from the You Rock Guitar website though to tweak the instrument to your touch, and get the latest firmware upgrades.
It has dozens of alternate tunings as well. That's great if you prefer to play in non-standard tuning, and don't want the hassle of transposing.
The controller is well packed (it took forever to unpack it with all the twist ties). The double sided poster is informative and well presented. The manual is straight forward and easy to follow. Just in case you are like me, you need to know you will have to read the manual...
Another great feature is that it can be plugged into an iPad 2 or later using the camera connection kit with a USB cable to control most music apps like Garage Band, Nano Studio, Sunrizer synth, etc. It seems to work with any Core MIDI compatible app. The fact that the neck is easily removable makes this good for making music when you don't have time, or room, to break out your laptop. Just remember that it is made of plastic and doesn't look like it will take a lot of abuse so be careful.
I don't think this unit will handle much abuse. It's mostly plastic and doesn't seem like it would take rough playing for long. I won't gig with it though, so it should be fine in the home studio. The strings were too tight for my playing style, but that was an easy fix after reading the manual. Also, the tap mode is a great way around using the strings. Press the tap button and just tap your fingers on the "strings" and play on from there.
The "strings" themselves feel like silicon. I don't know how durable they will be in the long run. I don't have a problem with the lack of a headstock, but they are making plug in headstocks as an accessory for those who want them. The metal strings in the picking area are thicker than regular guitar strings and all the same size. For a fingerpicker like me that is distracting and weird feeling, but after adjusting the tension of the strings (and the gain in the software), I am getting used to it.
A guitar style MIDI controller for under $200 that works great! How can that not be a value?

the good:

-The software is easy to use
-it works out of the box
-the tracking is fairly accurate
the bad:
-triggering is not perfect
-the pickups for the strings aren't accurate for velocity triggering.
-The strings on the fret board need more pressure than a real guitar to get the right note. So inversions and advanced chord shapes are hard to play
-Leaving hammer on mode on will cause double triggering
-slide mode defeats hammer on mode and is useless as you can't actually slide. It just uses the pitch bend instead of triggering a new note.
-The tremolo bar is not removable.
Don't expect to be "wowed". It's a little over priced for the accuracy it is capable of. I'm interested in seeing what future firmware will do.

The YRG-1000 is a good MIDI controller for guitarists. It works well with GarageBand for both OSX and iOS.
It's pretty easy to fine tune the trigger levels to match your picking style when you use the setup program available on the Yourockguitar.com website. I really needed to spend some time setting string tensions and trigger levels. It didn't work too well for me right out of the box.
You need to play with a very clean technique with this device and you will also need to modify your thinking, because it isn't a guitar. For example, you can't mute strings with your left hand because where ever they are touching the fretboard, a note will sound.
I'm not sure that I could use this live. I still get random triggering but it could be my technique that is causing them. Too bad because the YRG-1000 with an iPad and GarageBand would make a great live rig for keyboard and synth sounds. You can get some OK guitar sounds from this setup, but why bother? Use a real guitar!

The only real problem I have is it sometimes has trouble triggering or "tracking" the right notes. Also, I didn't like you can't hammer on while strumming, it doesn't track right. These problems can be worked around, all in all a good tool to be used in recording.

If you are expecting to play this with the same feel as a guitar then forget it! Stand alone mode is also useless. Almost packed up and sent back same day. HOWEVER.... I decided to try controlling a couple of my keyboards and soft-synths. It opened up a whole new world for soloing. Have to use tap mode & slide for it to be effective. So it takes quit a bit of effort to get used to controlling it, but it does offer new horizons for different synth solos. It still does not work well using as a guitar even with external sounds (I play guitar as well.) I will say if you are wanting to do some nice cord progressions and strumming, this would NOT be the instrument for you. The articulation for chords isn't there nor the "feel" and response of the strings for strumming. That being said, if you're looking to add a different feel to your solo lines, this may be worth a try.

I saw a guy ripping it up using this as a midi-trigger device on YouTube. Otherwise this thing is totally useless. It's not at all like playing a real guitar and is disorienting and the sounds included are lousy. Supposedly it has an instruction mode but what the point that it make a clunky noise when you hit a wrong note coz you'll know a wrong note when you play it anyway. Now if the put lights that show you where your scales are on the next "pro" model that will be useful. The only reason I didn't send it right back is because I am going to give it to my Godson on his birthday so he can beat around on it and maybe use it for a midi trigger device on a future project.

Purchased for music only - so I have no info on the gaming performance. Great as a MIDI controller, built-in sounds are good, but not studio quality. If you power the You Rock with USB and have an external interface to the same computer's DAW, you may get an annoying hum due to circuitry loop. I contacted customer support on this issue and received a reply in less than 24 hrs. with details on how to possibly eliminate the hum. The suggestions didn't work, but the fast reply was impressive.
I now power the You Rock with another computer's USB, and there is no hum.
Also, the strings are not very sensitive, very often strumming or picking will result in missed string
sounding. I have tried many options in an attempt to fix this issue, but nothing works.
Overall, it's good for MIDI, and that's about it.

While it looks like the designers of the YRG were full of good intentions, the unit falls way short on performance and execution.
The on-board sounds are cheesy and the inability to articulate the notes (such as string vibration, accurate slide, etc.) offer very little value to the serious musician.
This is NOT the one for you...
This evaluation was done using both the usb port and the legacy midi connector, running Logic 8 and a variety of virtual instruments.
On the plus side, the "strings" on the fretboard are confortable to play and track perrty acurately, but offer no additional articulation other then sounding the correct note.
The "tap" fuction allows you to play with both hands on the fretboard but drop the output level significantly, and the "slide" funtion which theoretically allows you to slide around the fretboard resulted in random 1/2 notes played with little relation to the notes actually played or even the direction of the slide.
There is no way to adjust or twick the midi sensitivity to correct the above mentioned issues.
The controller feels like a slightly larger game controller, but that is not a deal breaker. over-all quality is decent, but not impressive.
If you are a guitar player, do not have a midi keyboard, and am looking into doing very basic midi work - you might be able to live with the YRG.
If , like me, you are in the market for a serious midi controller allowing you to play virtuall instruments in ways no possible with a keyboard - save your money and invest in a Roland GR and a Roland pickup.

It is great. I like mine, that is all I can say. Never tried a Roland, but I can't afford one.
You can be very expressive with this thing. Hammer ons. You can also make the notes tremble by wiggling your fingers, and control volume in MIDI mode by pressing harder or softer on the fret. The "strings" have the feel of a nylon classic guitar. I often forget they are not strings.
You can make the notes swell and vibrate with this techique, plus the whammy bar. I never worked with a MIDI controller before. I have Windows XP Home, w/ Athlon dual core, 2gb RAM and use standard, onboard sound (RealTek HD). Get Asio4all to make the programs work better. Reaper there was too much lag, but MuLabs worked right out of the box.
You can get some great sounds with VST plugins, for free such as DSK...they sound great, and can be really tweaked. There are so many features I have yet to try them all!
The build quality is good. It is plastic, but has a heft to it. The electronics worked.
A great bang fot the buck in MHO. You can be very expressive with this device. You will forget you are playing a MIDI controller sometimes! A GREAT VALUE. I have yet to try all of it's features. You can not only control sound with computer settings and devices, but also use the guitar just like a "real" guitar to shape the sound. The instrument has to be learned just like any other.
