Finally, someone has explained how to use scales. Everyone always says to learn the pentatonic scales but no one shows you how to use them. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to play the blues or just wants to learn scales. I have bought other books in the past and was disappointed with their wording and explanations. This book, however, is easy to follow and teaches you exactly what you need to know. I know an awesome guitarist who can improvise really well. I asked him how he learned and told me about a book called Blues You Can Use. Best purchase I've ever made!

I've got quite a few books, CDs, DVDs of licks, lessons, etc. And this simple book blows them all away.
The chapters are short, each containing something about scales, something about chord forms and/or progressions, and a 12-bar solo TAB. There is some theory, but it's not dry. Very practical approach. The solos are both functional and musical, making them fun to play as well as exercising what you should be learning up to that point. Definitely not just drills, but not just random pieces either.
I'm a beginning->intermediate player, and was able to rip through the first few chapters. But even with them, there was something I'd previously glossed over that needed "remedial attention". When I practice I usually warm up with some scales (in lots of keys as the author recommends), then some simple progressions, just tapping my foot, then I play through each chapter's solo. I'm a little over halfway through the book, and the earlier material is so familiar it's becoming part of my DNA.
I have purchased the other books in the series, but as the material gets harder, I'm slowing down to make sure I get it all, so I probably won't get to the Blues II book for several months. I have found the Chords book to be very useful. It's much more than a simple listing of chords. Every possible voicing, but also the theory to understand how triads are made from "stacking thirds", etc.
I highly recommend this series.
I bought all these books from Musician's Friend. At the time of my purchase, Amazon had them all much cheaper, so I called MF and of course they price-matched with no argument. Best of both worlds - price and service.

Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
Finally a book that I can enjoy learning from and my favorite part is playing the lead along with the CD. I'm an intermediate and all I needed was to understand how to utilize a scale in a song. Got it now. I also understand scale patterns up and down the fret board now, so when I jamming to backing tracks and this CD, I am having a lot more fun now.
Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
Good initial discussion on Penatonic forms and movements. However, I highly recommend that you accompany this book with "Fretboard Logic". It helps make additional sense of the material.
Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
When I first got this book I tried to fast track my way through it by reading a little bit of the lessons and just learning the playing examples. I eventually grew bored with it and tried to learn more complex stuff, only to realize that I had no education on things like keys, roots, chords, progressions, etc.Now I'm going through the book again and actually reading every lesson and absorbing every bit of information and, WOW, was I missing a lot! This book provides a terrific foundation for the journey to learning how to play blues guitar. It starts off with the basics and moves forward at a comfortable pace. I enjoy it so much I even bring it to work with me every day and read it when I get a break.

A must for aspiring blues enthusiest. Starts easy and progresses to more difficult without leaving you stranded. I learned more in 2 weeks than the previous year.
Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
If you have been playing blues for a while as I have you may find the start of the book too simple. As you progress, however, it get to the more advanced stuff. I have found new lead tones and some cool chords that I now use all the time. It's a very direct book not alot of history or verbage. Just try what it shows you and listen to the CD. If you have the blues in you you will have a blast with this book.
Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
This book breaks it down. Easy to use, fun to learn. I have hundreds of tab book and spend a lot of time on the net looking for tab. There is a difference between memorizing tab and learning new stuff. This book really teaches useful stuff. I love it and recommend this book. Worth twice the money I spent on it, and will order Blues you can use II for sure.
Comments about Hal Leonard Blues You Can Use Book/CD:
The introduction page sums this book up quite well:"Who can use this bookThese lessons were designed or you if:you have at least a beginning level of experience on the guitar and you know some chords and songs.you have ben playing fo a while but feel stuck in the rut of playing the same things over and over.you want to organize what you have learned over the years and fill in the gaps.you love the blues and want to expand your blues based repertoire.you teach guitar and can use an organized series of progressive lessons to offer your students."The CD recordings are very high quality, and the lessons build on what you learn in the previous lesson.I have thoroughly enjoyed studing this book, and have ordred the other books in the series.A great study product and well worth the price for an aspiring blues player.
