Akai Professional

Portable keyboard controller with extensive software control.

The Akai Pro MPK mini is an ultra-compact mini-keyboard with an impressive array of buttons, knobs and pads to provide hands-on performance and production control no matter your location. MPK mini strikes the perfect balance between portability and comprehensive software control by melding together the complete control offered in the popular Akai Pro MPK family with the grab-and-go convenience of the LPK25 and LPD8. With a 25-note keyboard, 8 backlit, MPC-style pads and 8 Q-Link knobs, the MPK mini is the ultimate portable controller to get your music moving.

The MPK mini keyboard is ideal for quickly entering notes and phrases into your computer. The velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately express dynamics, while accessing different pitch ranges is done instantly through dedicated Octave Up and Octave Down buttons. Create sparkling, staccato leads and driving bass-lines in a variety of time denominations and patterns with MPK mini's built-in arpeggiator. A Tap-Tempo button gives you the ability to quickly adjust the arpeggiator clock, which is essential if you're looking to stay in sync with a band. A Sustain button holds notes after releasing your hand from the keyboard allowing you the opportunity to easily pound pads and twist knobs, with no pedal required.

MPK mini's 8 backlit, velocity-sensitive pads are based on Akai Professional’s MPC line of iconic music production stations. Great for firing one-shot samples and sequencing drum patterns, you can use the pads to send note information, MIDI CCs, or even program changes. Pressing the Bank button will quickly toggle between 2 banks of pads giving you access to 16 pads in total. Additionally, the MPK mini has 8 assignable Q-Link knobs to control virtually any parameter in your software.

MPK mini works plug-and-play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to your favorite software programs. The included software editor lets you quickly map MPK mini's controls as well.

The Bottom line this is fantastic. It works and does what its supposed to. Its lightweight very portable easy to use and does exactly what you need it to do. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a small MIDI controller.
This has 25 Keys 8 Pads Great volume control, USB plug in, Octave control, Appregiator, 2 Pad Banks, Easy to use sustain button, and very easy to set up and program to your computer. Not to mention extremely lightweight and portable.
This has been a fantastic addition to my home studio. Lightweight easy to use and i have yet to have any problems whatsoever with this great machine. My one and only concern that im not in LOVE with is the keys could be a little heavier other than that the pads are great volume control great and is very easy to use.
For the price especially this is a very great efficient device that will help you alot. Its very easy to use and for what your paying its the perfect price.

I mainly play gits, drums, bass. I record and compose professionally. It was used less than 10 times since I bought it a bit over 1 year ago (as stupid deal of the day...). It was only used in a home studio setting to add some background chords/arpeggios to some recordings.

Note: I am very careful with my stuff and quite good at fixing stuff/soldering etc.
2nd note: this is designed/sold as mobile solution - but it is useless for this purpose due to its ultraflimsy USB plug.

It's functional, not too easy to program, very light and portable, but feel plasticy/cheap.

    Here more bads:
    1) the keys are very small and not very touch-sensitive/linear in response. Very tough springy feel. The drum pads are also very insensitive - check the many complaints online...

    2) when plugged into a USB plug, the driver tends to 'cancel out' some other USB devices that are plugged in the same chain (Windows 7, 64bit)

    3) Does not work when the Akai editor software is running - one cannot play around with pad assignments etc on the fly. I had to download editor, driver, etc - the CD was outdated, but not too much of a biggie...

    4) this keyboard is powered via the USB port - some laptop configurations do not support the power consumption. You will to have to fiddle with your operation system if you encounter this issue. It also will shorten your battery life.

    5) the WORST last: the mini-USB port is only attached to the mainboard with 4 about 1.5 x 1.5 mm (that's ~1/32 sq in) solder spots. No hooks/holes etc hold it on the circuit board. Those break extremely easily - in my case only maybe 10-15 gentle connects/disconnects (see point 2). Any frequent use on your lap, bending, or any minor bang against the plug will wear them out and snap them even faster.
Again, this is a very common complaint online.
If you are willing/able to actually exercise this micro-surgery...). The cicuit board is constructed in such a way that it is impossible to replace/resolder a new one in. There are two short very thin wires that will snap when the port breaks off. Right next to them are 4 capacitors that will be fried when soldering in a new port.
Considering that this keyboard is designed for traveling, mobile/laptop use, it is a question of time for this to break - again, check the problem online.

In summary, I recommend to stay very far away unless you plan to attach it to a desktop once and forever, exclusively will use it on a desk, or have too much money to spend to replace it.

    Good product, Bad craftsmanship

    By John

    from Minnesota

    About Me Professional Musician

    Pros

    • Easy To Use
    • Many Controls

    Cons

    • Poor Quality
    • Usb Port

    Best Uses

    • Backup
    • Controlling Software

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

AKAI included a 1 year warranty, so I've had 2 of these: the original purchase, and a replacement. The USB port of the first bent after 1 month of use and the USB port of the replacement completely broke off and fell into the device a few days after its arrival. This was from light use at home and I was extremely careful with the second one.

Other than the USB port it's a good product; it's easy to install/use, the keys and pads are velocity sensitive, and it can control many parameters of your software.

The defective USB port is a major flaw because once it breaks, the device becomes useless, and that is why I give this product a low rating.

    Cons

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

The review before about the flimsy USB port wasn't kidding. I disregarded it when purchasing since that was the only review regarding it.

I had been using it for not even a week when the keyboard slid off its perch from a height of about 1 and 1/2 feet while it was plugged in, and the USB port detached clean off the board. Once I get the repaired keyboard back from the manufacturer, I'm going to open the keyboard and epoxy the hell out of the USB port. Even though that will probably void the warranty, hopefully it will become usable.

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

The delay is terrible and the user manual does not help with the "setting-up" process at all. I had to learn most if not everything from either youtube or on my own.

Other than that it's a blast to play with. I literally have to set timers on my phone to make sure I do not play it for too long.

I recommend all musicians having this piece of musical equipment.

This is a pretty straight forward thing, the only thing is that there's a few things that only a guidebook could teach. Luckily, if you google "MPK MINI LAPTOP PRODUCTION KEYBOARD instructions" there should be a PDF of them. But I hope to record neat stuff with this.

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I think that this is an excellent product, that can be used when on the road. I especially liked how it applied to percussion, though it took me a little bit to figure out how to program the pads. It is especially useful to have the keyboard close to the pads, so it expands your the soundbank you can easily control. I would still prefer to have a full size midi controller, but for travelling, it fits easily in a book bag, and it is easy to take on the road.
