OVERVIEW

49-key keyboard controller for use with virtually all Mac and PC music software and MIDI devices.

The Alesis QX49 USB MIDI keyboard controller can take command over any parameter of your favorite music software. Through standard USB connection, the QX49 receives power while also transmitting MIDI data to your Mac or PC software or hardware device of choice. Punch out a drumbeat on great-feeling pads, open up a filter with smooth, tight knobs, or adjust volume and playback of sequencing software with long faders and snappy buttons. QX49's immense parameter control and velocity-sensitive keyboard get your hands off of the mouse and into the action for a more efficient, visceral music-making experience.

With a 49-note keyboard, the QX49's pitch range is perfect for performing with software instruments and samplers while still remaining highly portable. Furthermore, the Q49 provides keyboard players with a full compliment of controls including pitch and modulation wheels, octave up/down buttons and the ability to send program changes directly from the keys. The QX49's keyboard can even be split into sections to control multiple instruments at once!

The QX49's array of assignable controls works with virtually all music software and MIDI hardware devices. Whether you're looking to fire drum samples, tweak a software synthesizer or adjust individual tracks in a mix, the QX49's extensive layout ensures appropriate feel and proper response with its eight sliders and rotary knobs, four backlit drum pads and dedicated transport controls.

The compact controller features USB-MIDI and traditional MIDI jacks for easy connection to Mac, PC and MIDI hardware. The QX49 also has two traditional MIDI jacks: one for sending MIDI data directly from the keyboard and the other for routing MIDI data from a connected computer. When not using a computer, the QX49 can also be powered using a wall power adaptor (sold separately) to perform and control MIDI hardware. A footswitch input is also included on the back panel.

The QX49 comes with a copy of Ableton Live Lite Alesis Edition software for performing, recording, and sequencing music right out of the box. The QX49 is also the perfect choice for controlling hardware MIDI devices. Its compact size and portability make it ideal for fitting into existing rigs and then hitting the road. Place it a tier above an existing workstation keyboard and utilize QX49's streamlined layout to maximize your sound and performance options

The unit looks great. I love the layout of the controlls. I find it hard to aquire the drivers from the Alesis site, although it did hookup perfectly to my Mac running Yosemite! I am looking for the midi map of controlls to program the pads, sliders, transport conttols, and knobs. I still think it is a perfect tool for programming at your computer and the fact that you can use it to control your moduals in a live performance is over the top. Thanks Alesis!

If Alesis fixes this problem, and continues to market this item at it's current price range, it will be a great deal. But be sure to ask if it's been fixed before you buy one!
I owned one of these for about a month, and I would like to give this item a high score. It has a decent feel, great ease in assigning controllers, some interesting programmability, and is very competetively priced. BUT...
...once I plugged in a sustain pedal, the problem emerged. Once the sustain pedal is pressed, the sustain does not stop until the unit is restarted. I search the internet for a solution, only to learn that the problem was common, and that it is caused by an internal design flaw that I could not correct. Fortunately, the folks who sold it to me took good care of me. Alesis makes some nice products, but until they fix the pedal malfunction, this IS NOT one of them. Ask if that problem has been resolved before buying one.
It would be a great value for the price if only it didn't have a major design flaw. But it does, and a consistently malfunctioning device isn't a great value at all.

Comments about Alesis QX49 MIDI Controller:

Bought this as a midi controller/ keyboard. Performs very well, and since I have a fair amount of midi experience was easy to connect with Sonar. The only drawback is that Alesis did not include a users manual, which means beginners are going to struggle with assigning functions and parameters. Suggest you find a generic guide online. Once you understand midi, you'll be a pro in no time.

Comments about Alesis QX49 MIDI Controller:

I bought this to control a little Roland sound canvas for the non-keyboard players in my band could possible add a little punch when our regular keyboardist runs out of hands. It works ok, but I don't like the action and the manual is useless. It'll work, but the trial and error method of running it is a pain.

Comments about Alesis QX49 MIDI Controller:

The action on this keyboard is VERY stiff. The hardest action by far of my 7 keyboards. I would have sent it back except it has features I was looking for that were only available in much more expensive controllers, like being able to split out 3 seperate midi channels to the midi output.

Comments about Alesis QX49 MIDI Controller:

I bought this to replace my great little M-Audio 49 key which was worn out. I only intended to use it for data entry with Finale software. If it functioned correctly, it would be more than adequate, but notes randomly stick on this unit. I don't think it is related to the sustain or software/driver related.

Sometimes when you play a note, a "note on" message is sent to the software you are using but when you release the note, it occasionally will not send a "note off" message. The note stays on. If it is a percussion sound, you don't hear that with the quick decay but the note is still "on". Sometimes it results in that note being added to every note or chord you enter into Finale after that. Sometimes it results in that note being missing in subsequent entries.

It is so frustrating and basically makes it unusable. I'm thinking it is a mechanical problem in the design or assembly of the keys, but it could be the driver or the electronics of the keyboard I suppose. It does that same thing with other software or modules. If you were trying to use this for sequencing, recording, or worst of all live performance (not recommended), you would face the same type of problem.

From what I have read on review sites, this is very common. Some people don't seem to have the problem so you could get lucky. With so many public complaints about the same issue though, I don't like your odds of getting a good one.

                      DO NOT BUY THIS

                      By SabsDoppleganger

                      from Undisclosed

Comments about Alesis QX49 MIDI Controller:

Okay, I owned TWO of these within one week, before ditching them entirely and getting an M-Audio Oxygen 49 instead. The sustain pedal problem that the previous reviewer mentioned existed in both of the keyboards I had, but get this, *I wasn't even using a sustain pedal*. Yes, while playing the keyboard, some notes would randomly get stuck and sustain indefinitely.

This isn't an unknown problem with MIDI, sometimes the data gets messed up and you have to turn a keyboard off and everything is fine again. Not with the QX49. The problem would occur no matter how often you restarted it. Also, it would go away after hitting some other keys, so it's definitely a hardware problem. It was unusable, actually. It happened all the time.

I really wanted this piece of junk to work, because it's got a nice feature set, but it's not worth any money and should be pulled off the market.
