Don't buy this

Pros

  • Slim design. fits nicely on a cramped desk space

Cons

  • Poor Quality

Comments about Alesis V61 61-Key Keyboard Controller:

I got this because the design is very slim and compact, so it would take up less real estate on my desk. But wow do I ever regret buying it. The key bed is so uncontrollable and wild that you can try to play a soft piano part but every few notes in between will randomly play at the highest velocity. I thought maybe it had to be an issue that would sort itself out over time as if the keybed just needed some more playing on it. But no, it still happens: I would play anything and I have no control over the velocity of the keys and random notes would just play loud in the middle of my soft playing.

Comments about Alesis V61 61-Key Keyboard Controller:

This is my 2nd v61. First was all bad.. but this one is great. The keys even feel better like if this is a new v61 revision. Sensitivity is perfect now. I updated the firmware, set the curve to 1 and my Kontakt5 8gb piano samples, korg and Mixcraft 7pro all work great. No issues. If you buy this and it doesnt work? Just keep exchanging until you get a good one. This is excellent now. Worth double the price.. ;) Order a longer USB.

Comments about Alesis V61 61-Key Keyboard Controller:

First I was shocked how much quality the v61 has. Sturdy build. But then it all kinda goes down hill from there. First the usb cable included is only 5ft long. Then the usb cable got stuck in the usb port of the v61. Then once plugged in it plays terrible velocity. Once you update the firmware things are not perfect but tend to become somewhat playable. 2 keys on keybed during a melody strike full velocity at random. Tricky save edit and write features for curve, sustain and drum pads. When Alesis builds the keybed it appears put in 1 octave at a time because each octave between B and C tend to be slightly higher or lower by 1/16 of inch. Also when you use editor you must close all midi programs then open v61 editor. Then close and open your sound program.. If open at same time the v61 program will freeze and crash. Also sustain petal needs polarity switch. So how did I rate 3 stars? I am in the middle of an exchange so we will see if the next works.

      Dont waste your money

Comments about Alesis V61 61-Key Keyboard Controller:

I regret buying this. They completely cheaped out on the key bed so there is no consistency whatsoever with the velocity on playing the keys.

You might be playing a soft, quite piano patch, and the all of a sudden one note will be hammered at full velocity and loudness, even though you played the key with the same sensitivity as the others.

Also, reversely, you might find you have playing a drum/percussion part loudly on your keys where you need full velocity, but then some notes will drop out because although you have playing hard on your keys, some of them decided to play quietly.

I bought this because it had the least real-estate on my work desk and is very compact and has only the necessary features. Something I was looking for for a long time, but its all a waste when you can't play it in real time and have to consistently replay, or go back and edit your performance.

Comments about Alesis V61 61-Key Keyboard Controller:

This is an amazing midi keyboard. The action is the perfect mix between hammer and synth (in my opinion), the keys feel sturdy and well made, knobs are perfect, drum pads are nice, just all around good. NOTE: this keyboard will sound terrible as soon as you plug it in! You need to go to the Alesis website and download the V61 software. You will need to change the velocity curve, as it is set to 5 by default. I personally would use 2 or 1. You'll have to "send the preset to hardware" in order for it to pick it up. Don't just try to change the velocity curve in your DAW; it will be to no avail. Overall, this is an amazing product and I use it daily.
