OVERVIEW

Analog monster in miniature.

The new Arturia MicroBrute is the next generation of the Brute family of synthesizers. The little brother of the award winning, modern classic: MiniBrute. The MicroBrute is smaller in size but retains the pure analog sound, the famed Steiner-Parker filter as well as Arturia's multiple wave oscillator with wave-shapers. No shortcuts were taken in making sure that the MicroBrute sound stands up to any analog synth on the market.

New Features
Step sequencer: Arturia has added a new step sequencer for generating patterns. This easy-to-us step sequencer is reminiscent of sequencers found on the Sequential Circuits Pro One as well as the rare and classic Oberheim DS-2a.

Updated Sub-oscillator: The new sub-oscillator allows for adding an octave down as well as the ability to mix in a 5th up harmonic. This allows this single oscillator synth to sound like a monster with multiple oscillators.

Mod Matrix: The Mod Matrix patchbay allows you to route 3 modulation sources, ENV, LFO and Keyboard CV (on the rear panel) to any of 6 modulation destinations. This semi modular capability allows for many sound-making capabilities.

The MicroBrute is the smallest and most powerful analog synth on the market and it promises to set a new standard for analog synth sound and price.

Comments about Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer:

Don't let the size fool you, this thing is a beast! If you are looking to get an entry level analog synth then get this one. The layout is simple to learn. After a little practice you can make patches that range from warm fat bass tones to erratic distorted leads and sounds. It's a blast to play with. It has no onboard effects so pairing it with delay and reverb really opens things up. For a beginner looking to learn analog synths this is the perfect choice. The sounds will amaze you.

Comments about Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer:

Great little unit with the ability to make fat sounds. Simple enough to not get bogged down, yet enough options to really explore. Seems solid and well built.

Would be great to sculpt sounds for later use. Could even see limited use on stage for special parts requiring true analog power.

Comments about Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer:

What a great product! Arturia certainly knew what they were doing when they made the MicroBrute. I have logged many hours on this synth, and I have only began to unlock its real potential!

Comments about Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer:

For its price range, the microbrute has a lot to offer, although it has its limitations. By only using one oscillator, the sound is less layered than most other synths, which have two or more sources, rather the sound folds over itself, and can feel thicker than two notes at once.

It can be tricky to get conventional synth sounds out of it, and the lack of ability to save patches limits the ability for live performance, if you're looking for either of those things, you can probably get a microKorg or something similar for around the same price. The microbrute includes a lot of things that make it a lot of fun to experiment and compose with. It boasts all analog circuitry (about a dozen times in the manual) the distortion (brute factor) produces some interesting sounds, and the sequencer is easy to learn and works well with anything else plugged into the CV or MIDI. Despite being compact, the controls are relatively simple, and I personally enjoy the tactile sensation of the physical patch matrix in the corner.

In general, I found it a lot easier to get my head around how everything worked than with other keyboards or computer emulators, and has a much simpler learning curve, while still having most of the modern touches.

There are a few controls which require a downloaded app on your computer, which is inconvenient, and there is no option to run on batter power, but that's the downside to having the keyboard be so small. The keys themselves are as good as can be expected for being so tiny, but aren't velocity sensitive.

If you can accept its limitations, there is a lot of fun to be had, and if you're looking for something a bit more unconventional (perhaps for some 'art brut')the microbrute is worth a look.

Comments about Arturia Microbrute Analog Synthesizer:

I am primarily a guitar player who is trying to learn about synths. I have several Arturia soft synths but I wasn't really learning how to make sounds from scratch or modify the presets beyond a certain point. There's something about having a physical instrument that -- for me -- is helpful in the learning process. Also, the manual is extremely well-written for beginners. Lastly, according to my research, this is one of the least expensive analog synths on the market. Build quality seems to be extremely good and above what you would expect at this price point.
