Why the complaints on included Protools SE software?
For your notice, any included software shouldn't be taken seriously. I just throw the software in trash and use the keyboard with my DAW.
I already have a DAW software before buying the keyboard. If you don't have a DAW software, please get one first before buying a keyboard, because all included software are just a joke or "free trial" to get you to buy the main upgraded software. So don't rely on included software - just take your keyboard. I learned this after trying to use inluded Protools software that came with my M-Audio interface. After that, I trash whatever additional software I get from whatever gear I buy.

So back to the keyboard - I love the fact that it's velocity-sensitive and wide range. It's perfect for its price. I've been working with it and it has no problems so far.

Upon opening the box of the keyboard you're greeted with the Avid Keystudio Keyboard, Pro Tools SE software and a USB Interface. The keyboard itself is truly very nice and I have no problem with it. It's made well and seems sturdy, the keys feel durable and the wheels and buttons are strong. However with any of the Avid products the driver (The program used to run the USB Interface) is not compatible at this time with Windows 7, and I also heard it had a problem with the newest Mac OS Snow Leopard but I cannot confirm that. I spend roughly 6 or 7 hours going through pages upon pages of help and resources on the internet looking to see if anyone else had the same problem and if there was any fix. I found a fair bit of people who have also experienced the same problem. So with that being said if you have any operating system other than Windows 7 and Snow Leopard this keyboard would work perfectly for you, otherwise save yourself the time and frustration and buy something else
The Avid Keystudio Keystation comes with the Keystudio Keyboard, Prol Tools SE software and the USB Interface. The Keystudio has a pitch bend and modulation wheel, volume switch, octave up and down buttons and an edit mode for MIDI recording and controlling.
As far as the keyboard goes it has outstanding quality, strong durable plastic, keys that feel sturdy and buttons that you can actually feel click when you press them. However the Software and Interface leave a lot to be desired.
For the price it's not terribly expensive it's a good base starter if you're just getting into MIDI.

        Comments about Avid KeyStudio Keyboard:

This thing is a lot of fun for a little money. Works great with my Windows7 laptop. Requires 2 open USB's, 1 of which doubles as input/output, I have to run that output to my amp, the regular connection from my computers audio out is over-ridden or something. The included software offers a wide variety of voices/instruments. The keys aren't as sensitive as I'd hoped but they are graduated... I hope you have as much fun as I do with it.

          Comments about Avid KeyStudio Keyboard:

As a new musician who doesn't have any keyboard skills, this keyboard is not to big and not to small for a newbie and was the best economically priced keyboard for a newbie like myself. As a newbie I liked the fact that that it has the note key letters on it so you can learn where the middle "C" note is located so you learn to play the piano and I have improved dramatically since receiving this 5 months ago. I like the fact that it comes with Avid software so a newbie keyboardist and music producer could hit the ground running to start creating music. This is a great starter for parents with young kids interested in producing music but can't afford a keyboard that cost hundreds. This keyboard gives you a lot a great price point, when on a budget.

PT SE works with XP and Win7 but not Vista (!?) and there is no patch or upgrade. I believe PT SE is also included in VocalStudio and another AVID offering. XP and Win7 but not Vista---how does that happen? I bought this as a spare for an older system but it will have to go back.

Unpacked the unit today and loaded the software with no problems ... even on an overloaded vista PC ! After hookup I was pleasently suprised with the sound , versatility and with the feel of the keyboard . The software is great and works well , providing many useful features . I am certain that this unit will pay for itself many times over and will provide a lot of enjoyment in the process . While it may be true that professional musicians might want more extensive software and a larger keyboard , one has to keep in mind the very affordable cost of this unit when comparing .

I'm so glad I purchased this! I thought I was going to need to find a piano to record my songs, but I'm very satisfied with the sound quality from this keyboard as well as the amount of keys. This was better than the MIDI controllers in my audio classroom in school, soundwise. I also like that it comes with the M-Audio Micro

Works great with Pro Tools SE. If you already have the current Pro Tools installed, there's no need to re-install it. Very important - make sure the keyboard is plugged in and turned on BEFORE you open Pro Tools. Otherwise the program doesn't recognize the keyboard because it didn't load the settings.
