Dave Smith Instruments

The Mopho Keyboard delivers renowned Dave Smith Instruments' sound in an ultra-portable, feature-rich performance synth.

The Mopho Keyboard is a compact, affordable, and powerful monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is similar to a single voice of Dave Smith Instruments' Prophet '08, but with a couple of twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. Dave Smith Instruments has added two sub-octave generators (one per oscillator) for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk. It features the same semi-weighted keyboard action as Dave Smith Instruments' Prophet.

The Mopho Keyboard is an affordable, full-featured mono synth with a 100% analog audio path. The Mopho Keyboard features 32 full-sized, semi-weighted keys with velocity and aftertouch in a package about the same size as most 25-note controller keyboards. Choose from its 384 preset sounds or craft your own sounds with 25 soft-touch knobs and 20 switches.

The Mopho Keyboard features 2 oscillators, 2 sub-octave generators, a classic Curtis low-pass filter (2- or 4-pole), 3 five-stage envelope generators with ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release) plus delay, 4 LFOs (low-frequency oscillators), and real analog VCAs (voltage-controlled amplifiers). In addition, it also includes an arpeggiator, a gated 16 x 4 step sequencer (with 1 sequence per program), feedback, the ability to process external audio, and an extensive modulation matrix. Hit the Tap Tempo button to beat match or sync the arpeggiator, sequencer, and match LFOs to MIDI clock.

The Mopho Keyboard is fully programmable and all the parameters are logically arranged for easy access on the front panel. A free editor is also available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming.

You can integrate and automate the Mopho Keyboard with your computer and other hardware using standard MIDI jacks or with a direct USB connection. The eagle-eyed musician may find it odd that a monophonic synth has a unison on/off parameter, but when paired with a Dave Smith Instruments' Tetra (sold separately), the Mopho Keyboard makes an incredibly compact, extremely powerful five-voice poly synth. So for a ridiculously compact analog poly synth, use the Poly Chain output along with the Dave Smith Instruments' Tetra (sold separately) to expand the Mopho Keyboard's polyphony.

This is a really nice little monster. It's sturdy, well-made and fun to play. The knobs are all there to allow you easy access to real-time tweaking. I play the mopho in a completely different way than I do my VA synths. The basses are amazing, and you can get a nice gritty sound by adding feedback. I actually chose this over the Moog Slim Phatty. I liked that it had more LFOs and more knobs. I'm sure the Moog filter is still supreme, but I'm very happy with my purchase. It's fun to turn this thing on and just tweak.

Quality:

This keyboard is build like a tank in USA. I wish the knobs were the same ones they use on the Tetr4 or the Prophet but I guess this is why the price is much more accessible.

Value:

I had other synths before buying this one such as the Moog Slim Phatty and the DSI Tetra... to me this is by far the best value 100 Analog synth in its price range!

Overall:

I would recommend this synth for someone exploring analog synths as well as experienced users alike. This product was designed by the father of MIDI, enough said! Add the Moogerfooger FreqBox with an expression pedal and you will go NUTS!

The Mopho keyboard is one of the finest sounding and feeling synthesizers on the market today. The fact that it is analog means that it sounds fat and can be dirty or extremely clean. After touch is a nice addition along with the available parameters. I love keyboards that actually include knobs. Most new synths nowadays only include three or four knobs, but the Mopho is decked out, and the sub-oscillators sound great! they really add a punch to the sound. People say that it doesn't sound as good as a Moog, but i say it just sounds different. Moog and Dave Smith both make amazing synthesizers! This synth truly is a predecessor of the prophet!

I hate to see something going up 100 bucks in price just because they start to sell. This is a great little synth but it has some quirks and you should ck the dave smith forum before buying this and the tetra have the need for a os update to fix midi issues. A lot of the presets sound the same and could have used a real sound designer instead of whoever programmed them but you aren't buying a analog synth for the presets are you? Even so its nice to have points of ref of what a real sound wiz can get out of the machine,if you are contemplating this or the tetra I would have a listen first because the tetras combos (4 mophos layered) presets sound great, better than great they kik analog ass, the ones that are on go, but no sound designer there either. 4 layered mophos will kik your butt though.I own both, the tetra I use mostly. Its got a whole world in it thats yet to be unlocked by anyone.
