Dave Smith Instruments

A 5-octave keyboard with vintage-style controls and modern sound options.

The Prophet '08 PE (potentiometer edition) is a 5-octave keyboard synth that has all the features of Dave Smith Instruments' standard Prophet '08, but many of the front panel's rotary controls use potentiometers (AKA pots) for more vintage-style control. It features an eight-voice synthesizer with a 100% analog signal path, velocity, and aftertouch. Add to that performance features like an arpeggiator, gated 16 x 4 step sequencer, and the ability to split or stack sounds—and the modulation possibilities make it capable of producing sounds that the classics simply could not.

On board the Prophet '08 PE keyboard synth, you'll find a spring-loaded pitch wheel and assignable mod wheel, 256 fully editable programs with two layers in each program, two digitally controlled analog oscillators, and three envelope generators.

The Prophet '08 PE is an affordable, full-featured polysynth with a 100% analog signal path. Classic, real analog sound, including legendary Curtis analog low-pass filters is married to a modern feature set. The electronic keyboard has a compact size with a huge sound and includes tons of knobs for direct, real-time editing and performance.

Features

  • 5-octave keyboard with semi-weighted action, velocity, and aftertouch
  • Spring-loaded pitch wheel and assignable mod wheel
  • 256 fully editable programs (2 banks of 128) with 2 layers (2 separate sounds) in each
  • 16 x 4 gated step sequencer
  • Arpeggiator
  • 2 digitally controlled analog oscillators (DCOs) per voice with selectable sawtooth, triangle, saw/triangle mix, pulse waves (with pulse-width modulation), and hard sync
  • White noise generator
  • 1 analog Curtis low-pass filter per voice; selectable 2- and 4-pole operation (self-resonating in 4-pole mode)
  • 3 envelope generators: filter, VCA, and assignable (four-stage ADSR + delay)
  • Envelope 3-can loop
  • 4 LFOs (low-frequency oscillation)
  • Glide (portamento): separate rates per oscillator
  • Analog VCAs (variable gain amplifiers)

Get the vintage feel and sound of rotary controls while taking advantage of scores of contemporary features when you buy the Prophet '08 PE.

Features:

The last Prophet I owned was a (SC) 600 in the early 80's. Alhough I've been through many (digital) synths since, I've never been fully satisfied as far as thick, greasy, ballsy lead sounds were concerned. This one delivers what I've been missing....operationally, it was like slipping into a comfortable old pair of jeans. The modern upgrades are nice enhancements, and thankfully, they do not get in the way of the traditional functionality of this classic warhorse.

Quality:

Except for minor superficial blemishes on the wooden end-panels (which I expected in a slightly-used instrument) this synth is really mint.

Value:

Saved about 200.00 dollars by going with the used one instead of a brand-new one. Almost a no-brainer, although I did have to take the loss of manufacturer's warrenty into consideration when making this choice.

Overall:

All-in-all, I couldn't be happier with the instrument and with the efficient and courteous service I've come to expect from Musician's Friend.

Overall:

My search for this board began when my Juno 106, bought in 1986, died.  I first tried the new Juno but it is a virtual analog synth, not the same as what I had. To my amazement Dave Smith Instruments is still making a true analog polyphonic synth. It’s like buying a new piece of vintage gear. The real value here is that it sounds like a vintage synth. Some of the sounds it can make are bold and brassy, like the synth used by the Cars in “Drive” or Toto’s “Africa”.  It has some patches that are also warmer like those used in “In Through The Out Door”.  Lead synth sound like the Moog used by Rush “Tom Sawyer”.  And the ending sound used in “Frankenstein”.  Like other vintage synths most all its parameters have its own knob, and can be changed in real time during play. With virtual synth’s these parameters can be underneath layers of menus. I have only had the board a week and am just scratching the surface of what it can do.  I have not time to learn how use other on board tool like the ARP’s and Sequencers and all routine capabilities of the 4 LFO’s.  Headphone won’t do this board justice. The bass that this board can produce are incredible and needs a 15” driver to feel how big and bold they are.  Note this board requires a stereo connection and will sound strange if connected mono. Dave Smith Instruments also responded via email to technical question I had.  Go out on YouTube and listen to some of the demos and see for yourself.  The Prophet 08 is a great sounding board.  Thanks Dave.
