Colorfully illuminated, pressure-sensitive MIDI controller with 16 pads, 2 rotary sensors, and 9 touch-sensitive sliders.

QuNeo from Keith McMillen Instruments is a truly distinctive and different species of pad controller that is versatile enough to be used by electronic musicians, DJ’s and even by VJ’s for controlling visual effects. The QuNeo covers all of the basic functionality of a standard MIDI controller with assignable pads, rotary sensors and sliders, but takes the power of touch recognition to a whole other dimension.

QuNeo features 27 tactile pads, sliders, rotary sensors and switches that are all pressure, velocity, and location sensitive. Even the 17 switches respond to just how much pressure you apply. The remarkable illumination scheme combines variably diffusive elastomers with 251 multi-color LEDs providing visual feedback that is immediately responsive and delightfully informative. There are 16 square pads that each provides 127 levels of velocity response, X-Y location and continuous pressure for each pad. Two rotary sensors allow you to scrub, trigger, stretch, pinch and play phrases and sound files, manipulate continuous controllers and more. Each rotary sensor measures angle, pressure and distance from the center. QuNeo’s nine touch sensitive sliders can be mapped to fader and effects controls, and the internal LEDs within each slider will act as VU meters so you can monitor your levels, or they can be set simply as visual reminders of where you left off. The multi-touch option let’s you select a length between two fingers to set stereo locations or filter resonances, creating intricate effects with just a swipe of your finger. Tapping functions allow you to mute a slider or toggle any track and its function. The switches on the QuNeo Controller are located in smart groupings that allow for easy selection of samples, fader banks, and transport controls. Each of the switches can scan up and down through files at speeds variable with the pressure of your touch. Great for quickly locating that perfect fill or loop that will flatter your performance. QuNeo is conveniently sized the same as the iPad, which allows the controller to fit into most iPad accessories such as mic clips, stands and more. QuNeo works with USB, MIDI or OSC and will communicate with your favorite music software environments right out of the box. More advanced users and programmers can use the development kit and API to create their own code to respond to QuNeo's sensor data.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D Multi-Touch Pad Controller:

First, let me say that the QuNeo has great build quality, good feeling pads, and responsive controls. And if you have one of the applications that the factory presets support, you're golden.

BUT - if you need to customize the operation of the QuNeo - welcome to a nightmare. With flexibility comes complexity, and some features aren't well documented so you WILL run into some surprises. There's a mode called CoMA that takes some of the edge off getting it working with things that don['t work with the presets but it still gives you the occasional "what?" moments. You WILL make programming mistakes at first.

The editor has a few minor graphical glitches but nothing serious, and it's comprehensive - if the device can do it, you can get access to it.

The documentation is pretty decent, as well. And there's an entire series of YouTube video tutorials you MUST watch, it helps a lot.

You'd better understand MIDI really well or be able to learn quickly, or you'll be hopelessly lost.

In the end, for me, it was worth the frustration and screaming, but your mileage may vary.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D Multi-Touch Pad Controller:

I was intrigued with this controller, enough so to shell out for it just to get my hands on it. I am not a DJ and I'm not deeply involved in electronic dance music but I am interested in expanding my performance capabilities with unconventional performance devices. The QuNeo fits that bill perfectly, but only for those willing to take the time to program it to serve your needs.

Right out of the box, the QuNeo is loaded up to do lots of cool tricks with Ableton Live, Traktor and a few other DJ/EDM centric pieces of software. If you want to use this device with other software packages, you will need to spend some time in the editor software. The editor is very deep and you will need some working knowledge of MIDI implementation in order to get the best out of it. At any rate, be prepared to spend lots of time in the editor.

The build quality of the unit is impressive. It is very tough and has a solid feel to it, conversely, I find the touch sensitivity to be a bit heavy handed and the unit doesn't respond well to light touch, but that is addressable in the editor. Recently KMI has started a webpage of user projects and software tools for the QuNeo. This should ease more users into the arena and will provide people with tools to get them up and running a bit quicker.

Finally - the real fun is in the visual effects that can be had with the QuNeo. Every single LED on the unit is addressable through MIDI and I had a blast just putting the QuNeo on the output of a sequencer and "playing" the lights with a MIDI keyboard.

I'm still discovering applications for this controller and like any instrument, I feel I will need to spend a good deal of time working with it to get the most out of it. If you want to explore some undiscovered musical/visual paths, this instrument can take you very far and for a very small outlay of cash.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D Multi-Touch Pad Controller:

I have been a computer musician for a while, and when I saw this, I couldn't believe my eyes. I immediately jumped on it's legendary Kickstarter Campaign. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. There is a growing community of QuNeo users, and they can all congregate on the Keith McMillen Website's Forum, where members share presets, suggest ideas on the QuNeo editor program (to which often times, members of Keith McMillen will respond to) and discuss their own personal uses for the device. It's really a great controller. Of course, lacking in any physical faders/knobs may require some getting used to, but overall, this really IS the most flexible Midi Controller on the market today.
With that being said, I wouldn't recommend it to beginners, (there's some basic midi/computer music terminology that one must have almost preknown for the controllers true secrets to reveal themselves) because it's maybe somewhat over their heads and they won't really find much use in it; the real joy of this controller, is the programming and the implementation.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D Multi-Touch Pad Controller:

You need to be savy to use this controller and that's because the install software goes from being vague to midi algorithyms. If you're looking for plug n play this is not for you. Maybe someday Sonar will create a template for the Quneo and this won't be such a hassle. But to assign every function manually ....if you have the know how...stinks.

As far as the quality, all is well except for the mini usb input...on their website under FAQ you can see that a lot of people have a problem with it and the response is to replace the usb cable...are there really that many bad cables or maybe the input is poor quality?

I sent a request to tech support to inquire how to set up in Sonar..A couple of days later I received an email with a link to you tube videos. Not very helpful at all.

BUT, if Midi is your thing, and you're good at programming...and you have a few spare usb cables just in case...then this is a great unit.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D Multi-Touch Pad Controller:

Works great in Windows 7 with Ableton. Once I got to playing with the editor and understood how it works I was blown away at the things I could do. I've been looking for a controller that really lets me perform my music as opposed to just hitting play, and this does just that. It has already improved the way I create music.

The pads and sliders are all very responsive and the ability to utilize grid mode on each pad provides an enormous amount of clip launch buttons or individual notes. Switching through the 16 banks is very easy and having each slider section in independent banks was something I have never seen before, but is extremely useful. Love the LED feedback and you definitely can't beat the price.

This is the midi controller of the future!
