OVERVIEW

Foot controlled MIDI controller with software editor.

Ever wish you had an extra hand when performing? Well the SoftStep 2 allows you all the control of your MIDI enabled equipment with a simple tap of your foot. Just program SoftStep with the easy-to-use control mapping software, plug in your MIDI rig to the SoftStep expander, and you're ready to send and receive MIDI data to and from MIDI enabled hardware regardless if youre using a computer or not.

The SoftStep 2 multitouch controller works with the SoftStep software application to manipulate a wide range of data, giving you a nearly infinite degree of controller possibilities. There are 10 key pads on the SoftStep 2, each incorporating a Sensor Key Technology enabling 5 degrees of freedom that are unique to each key, including X, Y, Clockwise Rotation, Counter Clockwise Rotation and Pressure.

Use SoftStep 2 to control music software parameters on your computer including effects, looping, sample triggering, panning, levels and DAW transport functions. You can also use your SoftStep to control your MIDI synth and/or rack with the SoftStep MIDI Expander (sold separately). In addition to controlling sound, the SoftStep can be used with anything that will accept MIDI or OSC data: lighting effects, video, robotics, pyrotechnics, and more.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep 2 MIDI Foot Controller:

I needed a foot controller to run my lights from stage so I could change scenes on the fly. After looking around for quite awhile I came across this one. Pulled the trigger and it works great! Beyond easy to program with my Mac running the American DJ DMX lighting software. My only grip is that it's smaller than you think. I have size 13D boots and the buttons are close together so I end up hitting two at the same time. This also comes into play when trying to bank up and down. If there was a larger model I'd give it a 5 out of 5.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep 2 MIDI Foot Controller:

I use the SoftStep 2 to control my worship click and backing tracks at church. Having more options than the clunky click-style pedals makes this a much more powerful option.

We all have those times that the team starts getting a little ahead of the click. Instead of awkwardly slowing down, I am able to press up on a pedal and catch the track up to us so we can lock back in. Same thing if we lag on the beat, too.

With X & Y axis options, each pedal has a multitude of options. It's also pressure-sensitive, so depending on how hard it is pressed it will change a value more or less.

FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE:
With the Softstep 2's Advanced Editor, I can make my board do anything I want. Combined with Ableton, I can tell it that I want pedal 6 to speed up the click when I roll my foot upward and slow it down when I roll downward. Same thing with key changes.
Universal Stop? Some pedals brag about having this feature ... on this pedal, just tell it that Channel 7 (or any of your choice) should send the same note on the same channel in every bank you assign in the editor and you have a STOP pedal without having to hold for a menu.
Of course, I can launch a track with ease and can select more "regrouping" places than with other pedals.

Some have complained about this pedal communicating with Ableton ... I have had no issues on my Mac. I downloaded SysEx Librarian, but now communication between the hardware and software is seamless. Works great!

I'm quite pleased with this product. I'm still thinking of how else I can use it. Imagination's the limit!
