10 Pads, X/Y sensitive Pressure and Latch/Live Features. FCB-1010 is a failure compared to the value of this product.
I've performed solo looping gigs using the Softstep and Ableton. This has been my favorite live peice of gear. Fits in a backpack and controls everything that your computer can do. I trigger FX, Clips, Loops, Master Scene Selects. I set up a wah wah recently and wobbled out my guitar.

It has the ability to create a SetList of your SoftStep settings so that every song has its own foot controller. I don't even touch the computer to press play anymore. I just press right on the Nav Pad and play my song with out stopping the music. Continuous Playing!

If you want a Foot Pedal you can grow with and won't sell. Buy this one.
        Highly Reccomended and Versatile.
I was so happy when I heard about this device! Bought it and am instantly using it interfaced with Ableton. I've mapped my whole album to it and have used it to loop and trigger many aspects of my set. If you are aren't very good with MIDI, this comes with a few presets that control Live, Amplitube and other MMC, CC, Note, etc.

If you are good with MIDI this is THE foot controller. Fully adaptable to any work environment and customizable to your liking. If you like a button that you made, it's copy and paste in the software and each button on the controller has 999 different slots for custom buttons!! 999x10

X/Y and Pressure sensitive. Wah Wah, Thresholds and Threshold grabs. Navigation pad lets you change all buttons at once to other custom buttons. MIDI expander Controls outboard Keyboard Program Changes. I use my MPD 24 to send Program changes to it mid-song and have not had issues yet.

I heard you can even send data with it. If this is confirmed let me know. I love Photoshop!

I am a professional electronic musician. I have never been so confounded by a piece of gear. It's simple looks are an illusion. This is great for people with a LOT of time on their hands who are into quirky little DIY experiments. After wasting hours reading the manual and watching horrible online tutorials I am giving up. This is one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had with a piece of equipment.

Becasue it ALMOST does what I want, I found myself constantly cursing out loud when I could not get it do do what I ACTUALLY wanted.

I look forward to sending this unit back as soon as possible.

A great idea - lightweight multi-function velocity sensitive footpads. Horrible execution. Pads are unresponsive. Software is just plain bad - uses too much memory, no intutitive way to save and restore sets. Can't use in standlone mode. Some of the worst doc I have ever seen. You Tube training videos are a joke. Assume a PhD in the application and don't explain practical use. I have given up on this as yet another boat anchor.

Using this to do even simple midi control is proving impossible. If it didn't require constant restarting of the software and plugging and unplugging of the pedal to keep it alive, the MaxMSP crashes will damper any initial enthusiasm.

The concept is great, but for the first time ever, this usb device put's a buzz in my signal. I've never experienced that before. I may re-post it if I figure it out, but right now, I don't think this unit is gig ready.

The most flexible midi pedal board!

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep USB and MIDI Foot Controller:

The Good: Softstep is almost limitless in what it can do as a midi controller for guitar players and electronic musicians. It's sleek, well built, and easy to travel around with. If you're looking for a pedal board to control all your midi functions in your favorite DAW, then look no further. It's in a league of it's own.The Not-So-Good: The software that supports the SoftStep isn't well optimized at all. Windows 7 users might find it a challenge to set up. I had to switch over to my Apple just to get the SoftStep software to work along with Ableton. The SS is still in early stages of development, so hopefully all the software bugs will be cleaned up in the future.

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep USB and MIDI Foot Controller:

Very difficult to set it up to get it to do what you want. One of my buttons isn't responding correctly after one month. Can't really use buttons for accurate volume and modulation control; works great for toggling and on/off, though. Buttons are too close together for accurate pedal control, for those not wearing high heels. Couldn't find an expression pedal that worked correctly with it. Pretty lights!

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep USB and MIDI Foot Controller:

This is the coolest new piece of gear I have seen in a long, long time. I first saw it at NAMM controlling an iPad app and I was blown away! This thing is so versatile and tiny, absolutely perfect for bringing to gigs. It worked out of the box standalone, plugging into with my Eleven Rack using the MIDI Expander. There are built-in presets for program change and one specifically for Eleven Rack so I could select my presets, modify my distortion and delay in a live situation, and even use it as a wah. I haven't had any issues with the software either.. I use it for Ableton Live also and the mapping seems pretty straight forward if you ask me.. This blows all other foot controllers out of the water. Kudos to the folks at Keith McMillen for finally making what guitarists and electronic musicians have been needing for years

          Be ready for a struggle

          By Blu Forman

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep USB and MIDI Foot Controller:

The SoftStep has a great concept and maybe if you are a software programmer yourself with a background in MIDI it would be a dream come true? Out of the box there were a few pages of info that included a "Quick Start Guide" and a link to the software online and a bunch of diagrams with almost no explanation that is really only enough for a start and doesn't give you any info on how to actually start to customize the product to do what you want it to do. The tutorials are difficult to follow because they use terminology that assumes a certain familiarity with the underlying technology of the product and/or it just doesn't work. Most video tutorials are only available at lower pixel resolutions, so you can not read the software (GUI) interface text that they are referring to. After a lot of hours of painstaking efforts to interpret the directions to the letter, I have not gotten much to work as described. It is definitely NOT plug and play ready.

          SoftStep is way cool!

          By Electroguitar man

          from Los Angeles

Comments about Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep USB and MIDI Foot Controller:

I bought SoftStep to replace my Behringer FCB1010. What a difference. It is so lite and slim when I take it to gigs it just fits in my laptop bag and is no big deal. I use with Ableton Live, MainStage and sometimes AmpliTube. It makes a great foot controller for any software amp simulator software, cause you need one if you're playing with your hands! and it's cool to modulate stuff in Live, like filters while I'm playing my guitar and Live is playing loops. It is really rugged which I didn't expect from the photos, it's made of something like carbon fiber and is really strong. Took a while to figure out the software but the tutorial videos on their website straightened me out, and they have a forum with some good info. This really feels like the next generation foot pedal board/controller and I'm happy to leave my Behringer now at home, it feels so clunky and heavy next to SoftStep.
