OVERVIEW

Complete reproduction of the Arp Odyssey.

Today, Korg has brought back the new and improved ARP Odyssey. With the advisory assistance of David Friend, the co-founder of ARP Instruments, Korg has completely reproduced the original circuitry for artists looking to recreate classic sounds and explore new ones. Together the engineers at Korg and Arp were able to recreate the sound and feel of the original. Every detail has been carefully considered to stay true to the quality of its predecessor, down to the sophisticated semi-hard case. The legendary ARP sound is loved to this day. Long stopped, the wheels of history have again begun to move.

FEATURES

  • USB MIDI and CV/Gate I/O
  • Audio Input

Comments about Korg ARP Odyssey:

This is not a Moog, and that's a good thing! Almost every synth follows the usual OSC->Mixer->Filter->ADSR template, but this is something different. The modulation routing capabilities are extensive, so allow you to get into some pretty weird territory. Just listen to Devo's "Hardcore" releases. This thing is all over those recordings. My only complaint is the side and bottom panels, which are made of plastic. metal would have been nice, but then again, there don't seem to be any noise issues. So careful handling is suggested.

Comments about Korg ARP Odyssey:

After reading AndrewL's review, I may have received a defective product there was no way I could tell other than the unit sounded terrible. In the process of the return since I had no experience with the unit, I could not tell if the unit was defective and was doing a regular return not a defective return and in the process I lost the amount of the shipping back to MF. I still do not recommend this synth as I do not feel that Korg quality control is there in these units to ensure that each unit is fully functional. Korg may have tried to get this unit to market fast. Regardless, you may get a defective product as can happen with any product but if you do not know that it is defective then you have paid a lot of money for a defective unit and by the time you figure it out it may be too late. If you decide on buying a returned product as an open box be aware that it may have been a defective product that was returned and no one may know better, I think it is a hassle to take the risk unless you REALLY want this unit.

      Comments about Korg ARP Odyssey:

I read Afee's comment, and I have to think that maybe he received a defective unit. Mine works flawlessly.
Always being a fan of 'that' sound (Tony Bank's solo in Genesis The Cinema Show was an Odyssey), I have tried to get that sound in the past by programming other synths I owned. But, this unit just KILLS it. Including the original 70's manual was genius, as it serves as a step by step guide to not only the unit, but basic synthesis in general. Knowing WHY you are tweaking that slider is very important to me. Other reviews have stated it has a high learning curve, and was hard to produce sound right out of the box. Well, so is a 1957 Stratocaster if you do not know how to play one. This is not a memory bank- ROMpler based instant gratification piece. Was never meant to be. Treat it as an instrument, LEARN how to play it, to mold and sculpt sound, and it will blow your mind. I never could have afforded a vintage one, and now I have what I consider to be a real ARP through and through. I spend HOURS under the headphones just grinning from ear to ear. The only thing I would get is a quality reverb or delay unit. Buy it.

        Comments about Korg ARP Odyssey:

I was excited to get the Odyssey but when I received it, the sound was thin and uninspired. At times the unit would randomly making noises with no apparent reason and as if a gate was opening and closing, sometimes random white noise would come through for no reason, and I could not figure out why. I have an old moog/oddysey patch book and when I tried to make the patch sounds, on the odyssey and compare it to the minimoog, the sound was not even close. I looked on Youtube to see what others do and noticed that despite the closeness of the units per the videos you can see the sidebyside comaprison videos that to get the sound as the original it required quite more tweaking and the slider values are not the same and. I do not have any experince with the original odyssey but I have a 1973 MINIMOOG that blew the sounds of this reissue out of the water. Compared to any of the modern moog synths this Odyssey tone cannot be compared with as the moogs are in a league of their own. It is strange as I would have expected a nicer product than this. In all I was dissapointed in the sound as it had no charachter and was un-inspiring. Before you shell out the $$ with an online purchase, please go to a store and check it out first. you may have a different experience.
