Korg

A palm-sized phrase synth for making music anywhere.

Boasting a supercharged sound generator, Kaossilator 2 delivers excellent synth and drum sounds spanning a wide range of genres, plus dramatically expanded loop recording. Use the internal mic to record guitar, vocal, or other audio source – just like you would with a looper effect. Its Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) display provides superb visibility. Other enhancements incorporated into the sleek and exciting Kaossilator 2 are a touch slider for ease of use, microSD card data saving, plus a built-in speaker and battery power.

Korg synthesis at your fingertips
The unique interface of the Kaossilator 2 allows melodies and phrases to be played by simply tapping or sliding a finger across the Kaoss touchpad. Horizontal motions control the pitch; vertical motions control aspects of the tone such as filter cutoff, feedback, or modulation depth. When using a drum kit program, multiple sounds can be played simultaneously, and you can even play the touchpad as if it were a drum pad. The intuitive design and amazing flexibility of the touchpad allows you to perform easily, even if you're not an experienced keyboard player, as well as creating performances rich with tonal changes that could not be produced on a keyboard instrument.

150 built-in sounds covering a full range of musical styles
Korg's acclaimed synthesizer technology has been meticulously packed into this palm-sized format. The 150 ready-to-play sounds cover a broad range of styles including hip-hop, house, dubstep, new disco, and electro. In addition, the Kaossilator 2 provides a solid set of synth sounds such as synth lead, synth bass, acoustic sounds such as piano or guitar, and even sound effects for DJ use.

Accurate PCM drum sounds
PCM sound generation provides drum sounds and drum performances that are more realistic than ever. There are 15 Drum Kits in the Kaossilator 2. Each Drum Kit consists of instruments such as kick, snare, and hi-hat. In addition, there are 25 Rhythm Loop patterns that let you create drum phrases simply by moving your finger. The lineup of sounds covers numerous genres, so you're sure to find the drum sounds you need.

Musical Scale, Key, and Note Range help create musical performances
Even if you've never played a musical instrument, the Kaossilator 2’s Key and Scale features ensure that the notes being played will match the song being performed. Use the Key setting to specify the musical key or "root." Choose from one of 35 scales, ranging from the more popular chromatic, major pentatonic, and minor blues, to the more unusual, such as Spanish, Ryukyu, and Raga. By using both the Key and Scale settings to match the song, you can play perfect solos without a single wrong note. In addition, the Note Range allows you to specify the range of playable pitches. You can set this to a narrow range to ensure that melodies will be played accurately as you intend, or to an extremely wide range to allow unexpectedly dynamic and unconventional phrases to emerge.

Gate Arpeggiator expands your performance power
The 50 built-in gate arpeggiator patterns can automatically generate phrases and beats by simply moving a finger across the touchpad. As a new capability of the Kaossilator 2, you can now edit the arpeggiator's gate time and swing settings so that musical phrases are created exactly as you intended.

Loop Recording allows intuitive overdubs
The Kaossilator 2's Loop Recording feature can overdub touchpad performance as many times as you like. By adding layer upon layer to a simple phrase, it's easy for anyone to create amazingly intricate tracks. Thanks to the Scale/Key settings, the results will always sound musically appropriate, each and every time.

Dual Loop Recording banks provide DJ-Style performances
The two Loop Recording banks can be used alone or used together for truly dramatic results. By combining the two loop recording banks, you can create new performances that were not possible on earlier Kaossilator units. Different sounds and phrases can be recorded onto each of the two loops. These loops can then be crossfaded or muted, or the loop length can be changed in realtime to create dynamic live performances. Unwanted loops can be erased and rerecorded while playback continues, so you'll be able to create DJ-like performances on the Kaossilator 2 without the sound ever stopping.

Record and loop nearly any source
The Kaossilator 2 offers both an internal mic as well as an auxiliary mic input. This combination allows the loop–recording of nearly any audio source. Plus, you can easily mix different audio sources, so that as a loop phrase created using the Kaossilator 2’s internal sounds plays in the background, you can overdub your own rap, vocal, or other external sound, or enjoy a loop recording session with a musical collaborator - such as a guitarist.

microSD card slot for data storage
A microSD card can be used to save loop recorder data. In addition, performances played on the Kaossilator 2 be recorded using the master recorder, and stored on a card. Whenever an important musical idea begins to take shape, it can easily be saved, and can even be used later as part of a studio production. This is also a convenient way to share Kaossilator 2 performances on the internet. The Kaossilator 2 also acts as an audio player and can play back performances created using the master recorder. Listen to your best performances for comparison, or share them with your friends.

NOTE: SDXC cards cannot be used. Supported file formats: WAV files (16-bit, 44.1 kHz/48 kHz, stereo).

Operation linked with KORG iKaossilator for iPhone
You can use the Kaossilator 2 together with Korg's iKaossilator for the iPhone/iPad. This allows audio data to be transferred between the Kaossilator 2 and iKaossilator, and lets you use the two devices in a BPM-synchronized performance. Although iKaossilator and the Kaossilator 2 share the Kaossilator name, their sound generator and recording style are completely different. While the iKaossilator uses a PCM sound source, the Kaossilator 2 uses a modeling synth. And while the iKaossilator provides a five-part sequencer that lets you freely insert or remove notes as you perform, the Kaossilator 2 allows unlimited overdubbing as well as recording of external audio input. By combining these two with audio data that utilizes the advantages of each, you can vastly expand your performance possibilities.

NOTE: Linked operation will be enabled by an update for KORG iKaossilator for iPhone.

Ergonomic design
The Kaossilator 2 features a comfortably curved body that makes it both stylish and extremely easy to play. The high-contrast OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) display clearly shows the names of the sounds, features, and parameters, and ensures excellent visibility, even in a dimly lit DJ booth or stage. As with the touchpad, the VALUE slider is also touch-sensitive. By sliding or tapping your finger (as appropriate for each function), parameters and functions may be controlled smoothly. Lightweight and compact, the Kaossilator 2 is slim enough to fit easily in your hand or pocket. The energy-efficient design allows it to operate everywhere on just two AA batteries (included). Equipped with a built-in speaker, the Kaossilator 2 is ready to share your exciting sonic creations wherever your music takes you. The headphone output provides privacy for playing and experimenting alone, and can also be used to connect the Kaossilator 2 to another audio device.

Comments about Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper:

This thing kills 2 AA batteries in less than 2 hours so make sure you have the AC adapter. Its pretty hard to use with power/sound cables plugged in and then you have to hold it in your hand. After about 3 uses i noticed some sounds started to auto play. There is no volume for individual patches. A synth can be LOUD !!! and then drums hits are quiet even with the volume all the way up. There's no way to mix that volume.

      cool little box

Comments about Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper:

Despite its downfalls, this device is a riot to play with. I can see it as a much needed addition to the duo act I play with my wife. It brings good variable dance beats, keyboard sounds and lead sounds into the mix. It will become the melody/lead instrument my wife plays, currently she has no lead instrument skills, this thing plays with 1 finger and when properly set delivers an easy to play, cool, lead sound/scale to those with imagination and inventiveness.
the ability to create 2 different loops is good, but an undo button is badly needed to remove the last thing added to a loop during a live performance.
accessing sounds during live performance can be cumbersome but is doable with some practice
the wall wart is a must as the K2 will suck dry a regular pair of AA's (like what is included with it) in way less than an hour, alklines go dead in not much longer. it won't last thru a 4 hour gig on standard batterys.

All the above being said the K2 is a decent value with a high entertainment factor for you and your audience. A blast to play with just for fun, and an OK tool to add to the arsenal of a DJ or other live performer
Lots of good useable sounds, kits and beats.
programmable scale and key means no bad notes during a lead if used properly
the small size is a plus.
this thing is a battery hog, buy the wall wart.
needs and undo button to undo the last thing you laid onto a loop, needs it bad as this is the biggest downfall of the device.
      needs a tap tempo button
it is plastic and lightweight, fits in a pocket.
touch pad and slider are nicely sensitive
This product will do better in the slightly lower price range than where it is.
that being said; this thing is a lot of fun right out of the box so how do you put a price on that?
accessing different sounds can be cumbersome but is managable with practice.

Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper

      By Scot Stoddard

      from syracuse, NY

Comments about Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper:

I read the instruction manual, which was only slightly tedious, put the batteries in, plugged in my headphones and was immediately blown away by the first tone, Lead Synth. Then I sat and went through some of the different amazing sounds, seeing what they sounded like. In the next 20 minutes, I had created my first loop(s) with a drum pattern, synth bass and a lead synth. Then I took the K2 to my music room and plugged it into my TASCAM 2488 Neo and blasted it through my studio monitors -- what I heard just made me smile. I added a couple guitar parts and had a great jam song done it like one hour. The unit is highly transportable, only slightly bigger than a smartphone, so you can take it with you and synthesize and loop on the fly anywhere. The built-in mic allows you to sample your own sounds anywhere, and you can plug in a mic also. When you're done, save your work to a micro SD card. It's easy to change patches, just slide your finger on the value slider till you see the patch you want. Patches are based in groups: lead synths, bass synths, drum kits, etc. Great versatile machine in a small package with a great price.
Recently purchased the Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper, and I have to say I was amazed with this unit right out of the box. The synth sounds are very high quality - the same sounds you get from Korg keyboards that cost 20 times more than this unit. I've been a guitarist for 35 years, but I play some drums, bass, and keyboards, as well, and I do some songwriting and home recording as well. However, I'm not a great (but merely functional) keyboard player, so when I saw the Kaossilator 2 and all it can do, I thought I would try it, as there's no keyboard! Using the touch pad to create phrases is just plain simple. Then hold a button down to create a loop. Through the function button you can adjust tempo, key, scale, length of loop, you can crossfade the two loops DJ style, and save your work to micro SD card. The arpeggiator is great with many variations. This unit is very easy to use -- you could even call it fun, the synth and drum sounds are awesome, and the price is hard to believe for what you get. Buy this and have some fun making great-sounding loop music.
A whole lot of features in a small package. The unit seems sturdy, well built. Sound quality is out of this world.
Small bucks for big synth sounds and packed with features.

Greate Improvements but some of the things should of stayed!

Comments about Korg Kaossilator 2 Touch Pad Synth/Looper:

      Cons:
      - Small touch-pad playing area
      - Some features are hard to access
      - No Tap/BPM button
      - No navigation wheel
      - No little neat note/sound/scale card (like Kaossilator 2 had), I really really use that thing with the first one!

      Pros:
      - Great samples and sounds
      - Very awesome beats (you can practically DJ with this little guy)
      - High quality hardware
      - MicroSD card for saving your work (thats just awesome!)
      - Easier connectivity to mixer/speaker/headphones (simple AUX out)
      - Only 2 AA batteries required if using it without A/C power adapter
      - Namings on the display are now full and in english (unlike the first one had those weird symbos which usually were only confusing)
      - AUX IN/MIC jack, which I have not tested yet, but you get the idea, now thats really a powerfull thing, especially if you beatbox or use several instruments live (drummachines, another kaossilator, etc.)

So, the best way to go with Kaossilator 3 would be to make sure the feauters and size from the first Kaossilator stay, while the features on the Kaossilator 2 are more easily accessible (ex: fader, navigation wheel, etc.).

Besides those things it's once again another awesome musical instrument from KORG! I would highly recommend this to any musician who likes to experiment!
The features are great, however some of them are hard to access.

As exmplae, the fader feature has to be accessed via 1 button which cycles through all the options and if I cycle through the fader I have to start cycling from the beginning. The wheel which was on the Kaossilator 1 would resolve that problem, that's a shame there is no navigation/volume/tempo wheel like there was in the first Kaossilator. There is the touch sensitive sort of scroll but the wheel is much better.

Also Tap/BPM button is A MUST! Once again on the Kaossilator the Tap/BPM Tempo button was done the best way ever - you either tap the BPM in or press it once and change it very quick with the navigation wheel - now that was brilliant!!! Why not continue with that approach?

Another thing I don't like is the touch area. It's simply too small and really hard to actually make a certain melody... a certain stylus would help I guess, but that kills the whole portability feature, I'd rather have the same size as the first Kaossilator.
The newer Kaossilator looks more cheap, however thats probably because of such a light weight. So far it works flawlessly.
      Definitely!
