Please note that all my comments are predicated on the price, which is super-cheap! This controller is more than adequate for bare-bones MIDI recording, and would make a decent back-up for shows, provided you're not looking for any on-board controls other than pitch and mod wheels. I actually rather like its simplicity and clean design.
The keys feel like synth keys (think of an old Casio), and depress uniformly and evenly. I worry that, due to the spring mechanism, they may break eventually, but after looking inside the chassis, it's an easy fix with replacement keys.
As for sound, well, it's a controller. Get some freakydeeky software or a tabletop synth and go to town.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR PEOPLE ON A BUDGET!!!

I picked this up to have something in my bedroom closet I could just plug in to my mac and play some late night piano. Its pretty good, but there's a lag when you hit a key that takes some getting used to. Its a pretty solid unit though and seems like it can stand up to use. For the price point its at it's pretty hard to beat. I picked it up on a stupid deal of the day which made it practically irresistible. If you're looking for a professional grade midi controller I'd look elsewhere, but if you want something with full size keys to bang out a quick idea, or something for your kids to practice on that you won't have to get skids marks on your credit card to replace (seriously, its like giving up a weeks worth of Lattes) then this is for you.

2 Dead Units

Comments about M-Audio Keystation 49ES Black with Ableton Lite:

I have had 2 of these. One Keystation 49, one ES. Both died with the same exact symptoms. At first the units worked fine, then after a few months they would put out just one note then no more to a modern MBP, but still work on an older Mac Pro. After some wiggling of the USB connector, the midi would work for a while on both, then it would finally stop again for good. I thought the first unit was just a one time time thing, so I bought another, these things are very cheap and very light for traveling. Needless to say, their customer support is useless. Don't recommend buying one.

My keyboard arrived broken. I think this is an assembly issue from factory. Unnaceptable for this brand, even being a low profile controller.

Comments about M-Audio Keystation 49ES Black with Ableton Lite:

I like this keyboard a lot. I have a full-size weighted keyboard I generally use for live performance, but it's cumbersome for smaller gigs. I got a 29-key unit for traveling/recording, but the small keyboard was limiting for live use alone. This 49-key one seems a good compromise. I was disappointed that there isn't a midi port as I also use a set of Roland midi pedals live and with the 29-key keyboard I was able to have both connected to my sound source. With this I can't do that, at least not without doing some fiddling around that I haven't explored yet. But on it's own, the unit seems good. I may even use it as a 2nd keyboard when using my MOX-8

Not what I expected, I bought this so I can use it with my Studio One 3 software as a midi controller but it has like a second delay response, the key springs are heavy and not confortable to play, but it does what it says. Me personally not using it again.

Comments about M-Audio Keystation 49ES Black with Ableton Lite:

I've used an 88 key controller to record for years and was actually look for a 61 key controller to save some space. When they had a black Friday special on this keyboard, I jumped on it and I'm glad I did! I was concerned that the 49 keys would be to short for the keyboard recording that I do, but with the octave keys, it is very simple to be in the right octave while playing.
The compact size is great and the feel of the keys works well for me.

Nice basic midi controller keyboard. Got it on SDOTD for cheaper than some 25 key controllers. Driver loaded with no issues and works on everything I use it on. The con is that is made with all very cheap plastic including the keys. It's fine for practice or laying down some rough parts in the studio. I'm not a power user anyway. DO NOT USE FOR GIGS! The plastic is very flimsy and will probably break on the first gig. The functionality is limited too.
