Comments about Native Instruments Maschine Studio:

Beautiful unit, but the required download is a bear -- about four hours -- and I had to do it away from home, as my PC is a stand-alone. The manual and related literature total around 600 pages, so be warned. Main drawback is computer dependency. My Maschine has crashed more than it's worked, though NI team has been helpful to some degree. What I'd like this device to evolve into is a complete stand-alone (all software located within the Maschine, computer only used for display or interface) with a USB slot for flash expansion. That way you'd be running right out of the box, and they wouldn't have to worry about piracy, either. I'd recommend this only to those willing to commit.

Comments about Native Instruments Maschine Studio:

Once I learned about Scenes, Patters, and Pad mode, I found that the Maschine Studio is an amazing tool for creating and performing traditioinal Bass, Guitar, Drums, and Vocal parts. The truly amazing things start to happen when you leave your linear based DAW turned off, and focus on the freedom that Maschine can give you. For example, plug in your Guitar, Bass, and Vocal Mic. Browse the Maschine for a cool drum kit, and start to jam on the guitar. Tap a tempo, and once you have found a groove, select Sample, and record that guitar part. Think of three more guitar licks, and repeat. Put down the guitar, and pick up the Bass, record 3 or 4 parts. Trim them up if necessary on the awesome waveform display to make sure the sample lines up on the one. Press and hold the pad to play the sample like a note; Record these into a pattern, and then place the pattern in a scene. Now the real magic happens as you swap out all the parts like one amazingly modular composition. No more "What would it sound like with a different bass line"... You can literally fly between them just by selecting a different pattern. For song structure, it is also amazing... Move any part anywhere in the song instantly. Now you can move around and preview Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Pre-Chorus parts instantly as you arrange on the fly. Also, jumping instantly between scenes has a flawless and seamless quality to it that then allows you to use flying between parts as a performance tool. Again, the true beauty lies in the rather non linear and more "buliding block" approach to performance. I break the vocals up into their phrases, and this helps to be able to perfect vocals "one line at a time", while also playing well with the Maschine workflow. Each vocal phrase can be labeled on the button, making it super easy to select the lines of the song in whatever order and phrasing you wish. Then during playback, if one is off, just re-record that one line, and boom, it is replaced everywhere

First one i got didn't even turn on and i ended up troubleshooting it for hours but it was just bad hardware, secound one works great. Hopefully native instruments fixes native access as it is a complete mess, great production maschine, but native intruments need to focus on fixing the major issues on the back end.

It's very easy to learn Maschine and it replaced my MPC just fine. The build is solid and the navigation is well thought out. The sounds are great and the built in drum synthesizer is excellent.
