Combines a high-quality semi-weighted keyboard with a full DAW and plug-in control surface.

The Novation 61SL MkII Keyboard Controller gives modern DAW users every dimension of hardware control. The 61SL MkII offers a hands-on approach to navigating software, audio mixing and controlling plug-ins. The Novation 61SL MkII is an extraordinary MIDI controller value. It integrates a DAW control surface with a quality semi-weighted keyboard-with after-touch-and the most intuitive plug-in mapping capabilities available. All this musical goodness is presided over by Automap 3 PRO-arguably the most advanced control software on the market.

61SL MkII upholds Novation's reputation for building quality hardware (like the SL Mk I, they will also appeal to performers who need a well-constructed keyboard on stage). Quality is not just reflected in their robustness, but more importantly in the way the 61SL Mk II has been designed with every detail calculated to maximize workflow. The 61 SL Mk II's visually feeds back all controller information to the user with back lit buttons and encoder LED rings.

The difficulty with other control surfaces is in knowing what is assigned to what. 61SL MkII has a giant 144-character ultra-bright LCD screen that displays all the parameter names and values for the currently selected row of controllers. All 8 faders and 16 knobs are touch sensitive, so the moment one is touched, the display shows the names and values on that row and puts brackets around the controller that is currently being touched. This enables the user to see which parameter is assigned to the controller without having to change the value, or refer to their software. 61SL MkII also has a dedicated 'Speed Dial' knob, which can be used to change the value of any parameter the cursor is positioned over without making any assignments whatsoever.

The 8 continuous rotary encoders have 11 segment LED rings around each of them, allowing encoders to behave like pots so the user can see the value before moving them. All the buttons have LED lights underneath them so users can instantly see their status without having to press them. There are 8 soft-feel drum pads, a pitch/modulation wheel and an X/Y Xpression touchpad which, (along with footswitch and sustain pedal inputs), are all fully assignable to any parameter with the Automap software

The 61SL MkII has been designed to draw minimum current so it can be used as a USB buss-powered device, and an optional 9V DC power supply can be added for stand-alone use. As well as USB interfacing, the 61SL MkII has 1 MIDI in, 1 MIDI thru and 2 MIDI outs.

The power behind the 61SL MkII's unique ability to map controllers at the touch of a button is contained within the included Automap software. Automap 3 PRO enables users to map controllers with incredible speed and ease-no more digging through MIDI continuous controller numbers, the Automap server takes care of it all. Automap's GUI gives the user a visual representation of all the current mappings on screen, as well as the ability to save and manage mappings across different projects. There is also an option to only bring up the GUI when a controller on the 61SL MkII has been touched!

    Very Nice

Comments about Novation 61 SL MkII Keyboard Controller:

I'm recently acquired the SL MKII. This is a very well thought out keyboard. The keyboard itself is high quality. There has been debate about whether people like the Fatar key action of this product. It does take some getting used to. I would think a keyboardists wants keys that are able to express a high resolution of dynamics at any range, even very subtle. This Novation keyboard certainly does this. Overall, this MIDI controller is extremely versatile and the setup is very easy, happening within 10 minutes or less. I've used quite a few controllers and this controller is definitely top in its range. I had the older Axiom 49. There was a lot of potential with this board, but once you experience the ease of use and high quality manufacturing of the SL MKII, you'd be hard pressed to go with any other controller. Buy it, learn it, and it will work for you.
Touch sensitive knobs and channel faders. Aftertouch keyboard. Automap software.
Made of high quality material. Particularly the pitch end joystick controller.
For the feature set you get, I think it's a very good deal.

Comments about Novation 61 SL MkII Keyboard Controller:

Very nice controller for total control of your DAW and VST Instruments. I bought my first Novation SL61-MkII controller two months ago. This unit had a memory dump/failure during an upgrade of the OS. The Novation people were very helpful with trying to correct the matter. When it was decided the memory had fried (or something...) Musician's Friend stood behind their EXCELLENT service and guarantee and replaced the keyboard with a NEW one ... not a repaired unit but NEW. The folks at MF ROCK!The new unit is up and running with no negative issues. I've used a number of midi keyboards/ controllers and none compare to what the 61SL-MkII can do. I'm using Automap 3.7 and all of the sliders and knobs automatically link to the parameters of my numerous VSTs and my studio DAW programs (Reason 5 & Mixcraft 5) which is a great time saver when setting up parameters for recording. In spite of the problem with the first controller I would still highly recommend the SL61-MkII controller to anyone looking for a top notch MIDI controller.

Comments about Novation 61 SL MkII Keyboard Controller:

Returned Akai's new MPK261 for this. I couldn't get comfortable with Akai's keys, and it's LCD screen showed very little information.

The SLMKII is a nice controller. Sliders, knobs and encoders work just fine. The LED's come in handy if you can't afford to be looking back and forth at a computer screen to see where specific parameters are at. The accelerated encoders took some getting used to but they're fine and smooth.

The keys feel pretty great, specifically for synth work. They don't feel cheap at all. The black keys themselves sound cheap when hit hard, like the plastic key is hitting something inside the unit, but it doesn't affect performance. I do feel like the black keys have slightly less travel than the white keys. This was only a challenge when playing dynamic-sensitive chords, regardless of the velocity settings (which there are plenty of).

Automap works great in Reason and Ableton! I'm not sure what people complain about. I'm picky and thought it works great. It's much easier to sit down and play, works well for live use.

The joystick and X/Y pad aren't great. If you flick the joystick to the right, when it snaps back to center it's not perfectly in the middle.. so you have to make sure you hold it when doing pitch bends to ensure it's not slightly + or - out of tune. The X/Y isn't very smooth, regardless of using my finger or nail etc.

All in all it's a solid controller. It's plastic, but nice and light, easy to gig with. I purchased a cheap soft bag and lined the inside with foam and life is good.
