Great Music Tool

Comments about Open Labs MiKo EC5 Keyboard DAW Workcenter:

Overall I like the Miko a lot. I have my Miko EC5 in my drum room hooked up to an electronic drum kit for laying down live drum tracks using Fxpansion BFD, Toontrack Superior Drummer, and Addictive Drums in Pro tools 10. As far as the money is concern it is worth every penny. I just got my Miko upgraded to Windows 7 with a second hard drive installed and 8 gb of ram. It runs smoothly without a glitch. The open labs tech support is fantastic they remote installed my Windows OS without the unit ever leaving my studio. The OS upgrade includes not only Windows 7 , but Reaper 4, Mimik cloning app, with tons of new sounds. The only thing that I have to say bad is I wish that the Upgrade came with Open Labs new DAW Music OS which I had to purchase separately at a discounted price.
I just bought my second open labs keyboard workstation (EC5) about 2 weeks ago and it is great for making sweet music.
The Miko EC5 offers some impressive features such as the all in one custom design with alpha keyboard for inputting information in you DAW, midi keyboard for playing software synths, and control surface for giving me hands on feel of control faders within my DAW, as well as a touchscreen for easy access. What I like most is the all in one design which makes it a portable solution and it hardly takes up any space on my design compare to having everything separate. With the Miko Ec5 you don't have all the issues of getting gear from various manufactures to work cohesively together.
The Miko Ec5 is very affordable when you compare it to buy a decent computer, audio interface, midi keyboard, control surface, and touchscreen LCD monitor.

Comments about Open Labs MiKo EC5 Keyboard DAW Workcenter:

dont expect to jump right in and make music, the learning curve on this piece is very steep, i currently own more than a few hardware pieces in my studio(roland x6,Korg triton pro, roland mc-808,akai MPC 2000xl and a korg trinity)and i mastered those quick. i am also a pro reason user as i give classes on the software at phillips music company here in lawton, but when i first opened this board i was totally lost. it opens up into riff(which if you are not a gigging musician you will probably never use) the multi track software(reaper) is ok but not as powerfull as you might think. the keys feel toyish, there is good response but they feel like the keys on my old casio like one good hard chord strike and you might hurt something, the power in this unit is really the fact that it is a computer PERIOD. after i realized what came stock wasn't really all that, i went to putting software on it, and there is where you see the power. i currently have reason 5 with record loaded as well as fruity loops 8, pro tools 8 LE,korg wave station, the waves gold bundle, and a few other mastering softwares and vst's.the stock sounds (which all sound really general midi to me) are expressive, but still simple sounds that are on most sound sets. i like the mobility one machine to do it all, but that being said a strong laptop and a good workstation like a roland g6 or possibly a yamaha motif with pro tools would accomplish the same thing. the touch screen is great, except when you need to do exact placements your better off useing the mouse pad. if you are a medium to pro user of windows you will be able to tell how they watered down the OS small things are missing like you cant set a password when recovering from the screen saver, you cant make another windows user stuff you dont need anyway but it is noticeable. antivirus is not an option, i was trying to install panda antivirus (just in case) but nope the OS is missing something that wouldnt let it install (oh well) the presonus firebox is good, but i use protools with the mbox via USB with great results.in closeing if you are looking for an all in one workstation this is it "TOTALLY" but the sheer size and cost of the unit make it unpraticle to move from pillar to post for fear of damaging it,i miss not having all my keys as i am a keyboardist and 30 some odd keys just isnt enough i feel i will have to use one of my bigger boards thru midi to have more keys, the unit is "OK" but not the end all be all unit it is cracked up to be. a strong pc/mac, protools and a good keyboard will accomplish the same thing except without the "cool" factor.
