Comments about Roland Ax Synth Shoulder Synthesizer:
I bought this synth at the beginning of 2011 and I love it. The playability is great and the design is fantastic. Having the pitch bend, modulation bar and volume/aftertouch knobs on the neck makes it very simple to control all of the onboard sounds or my midi engines. I play in a progressive rock band and having this synth strapped on definitely catches everyone's attention. Not only does it look cool but it makes scaling and shredding simple and easy due to the vertical positioning of the keys.
SO HERE'S THE STORY: back in August 2012, our trailer got broken into and 7,000+ worth of equipment got stolen, including my AX Synth. After a month without it the thief was caught and the majority of the gear was recovered, minus my AX Synth. After they caught the thief he had contacted his accomplice and told him to ditch the remainder of the stolen gear and so he sent my AX Synth down a creek and it wasn't found until two days later. When it was returned to me I assumed it was dead. I put the batteries in and tried to power it up but got nothing. Two months later I plugged it in with the AC adapter (just for kicks) and it powered on! I was amazed. I then opened it up (since my warranty was void at this point anyhow hah) and saw that there wasn't ANY water damage to the innards! All I have to do is replace my battery compartment and I'll be good to go!
Needless to say, I love this synth and I would go back and buy it a hundred times over. It took a bath in the river for two days and came out functional!
Buy a Roland AX Synth. It rules.
Comments about Roland Ax Synth Shoulder Synthesizer:
As I mentioned in the heading, it is the best Keytar yet but in no way perfect. I do like the sounds overall. One sounds works really good with the chorus part of "Hungry Like the Wolf"-(All the guys in the band really like that!). Roland is getting there. It needs some basic drum loops, better midi & a way to save more than 8 sound presets.
It does have the most used features you could expect for something like this. The sustain button is a joke though. It should be located more toward the general thumb area & a lot larger button so no mistake made when depressing it.
Being plastic, it is not as bad as I thought. Pretty light considering it's size. Should be shorter in length. Strap not too bad either,
It only gets a 6 here. (It's over-priced & twice the cost of the Lucina). I think a $899.00 price point would have been about right.
Comments about Roland Ax Synth Shoulder Synthesizer:
I think it's possible for Roland to make a great keytar, but I don't think they will... and this is a good as they get for now. I think keytars' popularity will wane again soon, and Roland will discontinue making them again, so I snapped up an Ax-synth now to try and get ahead of the inevitable--maybe I'll be wrong and they'll keep developing better and better shoulder keyboards, but I've obviously bought this one so part of me hopes they don't :^)
has some pretty good sounds and a lot of bad ones... fortunately, in the electric guitar leads section, they offer some less "metalhead distortion" type sounds (cleaner guitars etc), which I was worried about... this is my 3rd keytar, and some things are very good (pitch ribbon, mod squeeze bar is nice, D-beam is fun and somewhat useful), but I think maybe the whole thing is a bit too large physically--perhaps a 41-key board (like the Korg rk100) would be better, and they probably could have gotten away with a shorter neck--it is very hard for me to reach all the way out to the end to change the octave selection, and I'm a 6'1" guy with long arms--I feel for shorter SV-1 players... good variety of sounds, but I wish they'd included a drum kit (I mean, seriously)
It's plastic, and certainly not related much to the metal and wood keytars of the past... But it is a good weight, and succeeds in being comfortable enough to play (I messed around on it for an hour and a half the other night without once thinking about discomfort)... The hold/sustain button kindof sucks, I must say--it's very hard to keep it held down due to how recessed and small it is... I wish they'd made that button stick out and be a soft-switch style instead... other than that all the controls feel good
it's pricey, that's for sure--but not when you compare it to the still ridiculously high resale market for vintage keytars/previous AX-boards... Having onboard sounds definitely helps the argument for the price, but it is still what it is--an AX-spensive plastic keyboard with guitar pegs
