Comments about Roland FP-50 Digital Piano:
Ordered, received first FP-50 from Musician's Friend. It had been a return sold in "mint" condition. On opening the box I found a very obvious problem with an A key which was visibly sitting lower than the other keys. There was also a prominent scuff mark across five high-register keys which I might have forgiven, but that A was a breaker; its defective action was intolerably slow to return (and never to correct height).
MFI was nothing less than excellent in sending a replacement and arranging return of the first. Kudos to their call center in Salt Lake City. The second FP-50 arrived at my workplace with a bang when the UPS guy dropped it on its end. Though I heard it and felt the floor shake, an ongoing meeting prevented me from stopping the guy to check for damage; a coworker signed off and he was on his way. That night, I'd open the box to find the instrument packed poorly with bubble wrap instead of the foam end caps that belonged there. (Roland prints a packing diagram on one of the box flaps, which was helpful with my return.)
Despite my initial sinking feeling that I might've paid for an unending string of other people's broken stuff, this second keyboard had no visible defects. It sounds great and travels well (in tradition of the FP-4 which I'd borrowed from a friend a few years back and loved). I've had it for about three weeks and will be keeping it. Basically I love the keyboard. Still...
Actionwise, it's not quite perfect. There are a few keys right in the center that don't always rise up to the right level, or travel just a bit slowly, or something. These issues are not entirely repeatable; it might depend on atmosphere or temperature. I can imagine that possibly my middle C will one day be like that higher A that I rejected. This being someone else's return (which saved me money) and knowing of a poor delivery (and who knows what other experiences in transit), I feel like I should forgive some imperfection. I don't travel much so will probably live with this for quite a while; but time will tell.
People considering the FP-50 may do well to read other reviews and heed well what people say about the action. Some folks say it's too heavy and tiring (across the board). This hasn't been my experience, and I've played mine quite a bit now. I figure, Roland's trying to make a grand piano that I can carry under one arm and fit easily in my Prius C (it does!), and something's gotta give. Despite their efforts, it seems to be the action.
