Flagship of Keyboard Amps

| Review By: Rickey Price | 4 months, 4 weeks ago

Features:

More than enough features.

Quality:

Some people complain about the price of this amp but the sound says it all. It is well worth every penny I paid for it.

Value:

Excellent value when compared with equal or higher priced amps.

Overall:

I always read reviews before making a major purchase for my gospel group. Let me tell you this amp came with high marks. Thanks to all you folks that steered me to the Roland KC-550. My keyborad player calls it the flagship of keyboard amps. As soon as I heard it I was truly sold on the rich sounds coming out of the cabinet. Would recommend this amp to all those who are serious about their venues.

I Actually compared the KC-550 to the QSC K12

When i bought my KC-550, money was NOT an option. I was only interested in quality and performance. While at a local music store, I told the keyboard rep to set the Roland and the QSC K12 (which boasts a 1,000 watts) side by side, so he did. Then I flatened the eq's on both and set the volumes correctly on both. Then I took a yamaha psr-e423 and turned on the drum machine. We Both agreed that the Roland naturally sounded better. When I maxed out both volumes, we were both amazed that the Roland was very, very competetive! The QSC had a slightly higher resonance, But if you know sound as i do (I'm a professional sound engineer as well) then you know that thinner eq's produces a higher resonance. That was the only difference. Believe me when I tell you- QSC needs to cut that out! In many of today's power ratings, continuous power is only 25% of max power. This means that the QSC's true power is around 250 watts. I like the QSC's weight over the Roland, but at the end of the day, I chose the Roland with no regrets.

Solid Power

I never started out being a Roland Junkie, but one day I looked around and found that I had a substantial amount of gear made by Roland.  I play a synth access guitar and use DSP effects.  My setup is a Digitech RP1000 and a Roland GR-20.  With all this flavor coming out of the pedals, I depend on a squeaky clean keyboard or PA amp for output.  The Roland KC series does jus that.  The KC-550 has more than enough power to get over anything that the rest of the group can put out.  The 180W coming out of a 15" driver brings the lower end out even at low volumes.  This is crucial if you want your synth sounds to fully develop. The 4 channel mixer gives plenty of room for mics and other inputs.  My only beef is that there is not an ounce of FX on the thing, hence the less than perfect score.  Roland packs great FX in even their smallest cubes, so why not here?  Still, if you are a keyboard player or someone like myself that needs good clean power, this is the amp for you.

Ideal for Bass

I have gotten to use this thing a couple of times, once for a few minutes on a poor quality keyboard.  The other time however was when somebody let me use it for about an hour on my bass before a gig. This amp really filled the room with great bass depth as soon as I plugged in.  It was pretty much the ideal sound, and we had to turn it all the way down it was so loud.  It is also very portable.  I would say this would be the ideal light amp for either keyboard or bass to toe around for rehursals all the time and maybe even some small gigs.  I'm kinda on a chrunch for money so I'm going to have to buy something cheeper.

I had the KC 500 for over 10 yrs until it got into a car accident. Loved it and now love this new one. I really try to take care of my stuff and don't like it looking road worn. So I hate when buds as for a loan out.My only complaint is the brass thingys always come off the knobs,75 lbs  and the increase in price. The last one paid for itself -hope this new one will too.
