I've used Roland sound modules for 12+ years and my original JV880 is still jamming beautifully. Just got my new XV2020. It's a whole new world of marvelous sounds. However... the accompanying manual is more confusing and less informative at the "getting started" level than any tech manual I've ever read. If you're considering this unit, you better be a mega-techie or have a close relative who works for Roland. They definitely need someone in their publications department who can write a manual from the beginning owner's point of view. It's useless to detail what the unit can do if they don't spell out how to do it, step by step. Excuse me while I go out side and scream.
I wish Roland could write a manual that was accurate and didn't leave out critical information, like Preset B, Value 14 for multi-timbral use. Why do we have to go to user forums for such info?
really poor setup control over the module, can't control most of the functions w/o a VERY GOOD midi controller, documentation is somehow mis-ordered, beside that this is a XTREMELY good sound module, i've buy the 06 xpansion , AWSOME SOUNDS!, totally rocks!!
This machine will blow your socks off! The preset sounds that come onboard are decent but when you expand to SRX with cards, it's awesome. I use it for a midi interface for writing orchestral and band music (it makes the perfect demos!) but I also use it for giging. Computer interface is slightly weak via the USB port, but that could be my slow computer. The 2020 kept a lot of the same sounds from the 1010. Sound editing through the computer is revolutionized with the 2020, much more user friendly then the 1010.
I first purchased the JV 1010 and still like that module but, I have also purcahsed this unit and find it similar but somewaht better. I have expaneded it by installing the (concert Piano and ultimate keys) and now the unit is very verisatle and excellent. I use a Kurzweil SP88 as the controller and these two units work in perfect harmony. Bottom line is that this unit is a bargain in my opinion....
