OVERVIEW

A magical introduction to music.

Schoenhut's bright 25-key tabletop model is the perfect choice for a toddler's first piano. Encourage your child's musical creativity with a fun and educational musical instrument. My First Piano is an ideal tool for kids developing hand-eye coordination. Chromatically tuned, the lovely chime-like notes are produced by little hammers striking precision-ground, German steel music rods.

Schoenhut's patented Learning System, with its play-by-color teaching method, makes playing simple and fun. A removable color strip fits behind the keys to guide small fingers from chord to chord. The chart also works on adult keyboards, since keys on Schoenhut toy pianos are of corresponding width. This teaches children proper "finger stretch" from the very beginning. The accompanying songbook contains a collection of familiar tunes. This Learning System has been specially designed to build a child's confidence and develop basic playing skills.

Overall, very fun and worth it.

As soon as it arrived, several of the keys didn't pop back after pressing them down, or two would press at once when you only tried to press one. The instructions that came with it said it might have these problems and to make run your finger up and down the keys and then shake the entire thing to loosen some of the mechanisms. I did that, and it didn't do much of anything.

It was an easy fix, though. I simply removed the 4 screws from the side that held down the top of the piano. I removed that and the front board with the logo on it. Inside it smelled like metal and spray-paint. The keys are easy to remove individually and fiddle with. I took out the high B and C (which were the two that would strike together) and filed down the sides. The cheap plastic molds Schoenhut uses had little pieces of plastic that stuck out and grabbed the other keys. I filed down the sides of all the keys and this helped the action and made the keys bounce up more consistently. There is still one key that still doesn't come back up smoothly, and I can't figure out why. I continue to fiddle with it now and then to make it better. I am not a piano builder or fixer, this is my first time doing any fixing myself, but it's easy if you know how pianos work. I'd recommend seeing what you can do to fix it before you set up a return, because even Schoenhut knows it'll show up and be a little defective. Their remedies help a little, but not as much as you could probably do yourself.

I also wrote another review on this right after I got it, saying I would return it. Now I love it and I'm keeping it forever. My future children will probably love it. Also, all my friends think it's hilarious and it's good for jamming with some acoustic guitars under a bridge or something where you can't bring a real piano or plug in a keyboard. Very fun, very portable. Might even buy another in a different color.

I bought this hoping I could bring it around and jam on it with my friends - something portable and not too loud, in case someone had their little acoustic guitar and wanted to jam in a car or go somewhere this would (ideally) be something I could throw under my arm and run with. The super positive reviews made it seem like it would sound like a real piano(more or less; obviously this won't sound that great) but i hoped it would sound - and work - better than it did. Half of the keys don't pop back up when you press them down. Some don't even make a noise at all. The pamphlet that came with it reccomended lightly running your finger along the keys, then shaking the entire thing gently. I did that, and it fixed a few of them, but a bunch still didn't work.

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

Buy this if you want to give a child a true representation of a piano. The keys are full size and the notes are actually the right tones. So many toy pianos have multi colored keys with no sharps or flats. Why give a child something so inaccurate? Yes, this piano is still a toy piano with a toy piano sound, but if a child has some musical appitude (maybe still undiscovered) why not give them a keyboard that is correct so they can begin making the connection in their minds
between keys and sounds.

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

Bought this for my 17 month old son to wail on. He loves it, and to its credit, it's taking the beating and sounds good doing so.

I will say, to all of those out there who order this product expecting a fully usable musical instrument, it's not. The keys and action are kinda wonky. It can be tough to play seriously (I dabble in keys, and have played on the toy piano quite a bit). But it does sound good, and for goofing around and getting your son (or daughter) into music, it is perfect.

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

I bought this for my one year old nephew. He is too young to really learn, but he enjoys "playing" it. The learning system included is well-designed, and I am confident a young child can use the color coding system to make a connection between the notes on the staff and the keys on the piano. The sound is as good as you can expect from a toy piano, and it's actually fun for an adult to play, too!

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

I bought this to introduce my two children, ages one and four years, to music. I was very surprised at the quality construction and fit and finish. It looks great in the living/family room and is very durable. The tonal quality is about as expected considering it is a child's toy; you won't be writing any concertos on it, but it does serve the purpose admirable as a child's beginner instrument.

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

For the price, I was not expecting much, but this is a good enough quality piano to start a child out on, when it may be subject to more rough usage than a proper piano should. The paint is good, over particle board. It is also user serviceable a little bit. One of the keys on this one is a little lazy, but shimming the backstop helped. The instructions are easy to figure out, and the color coding of the keys helps a lot. Very pleased with this purchase and the service of Musicians Friend.

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

I bought this little "piano" for my son and I'm fairly impressed by it.
Firstly it's a beautiful little instrument, the finish looks great and thus far it's endured my son's abuse very well. Secondly I'd like to point out that this is a REAL instrument, it's not the typical obnoxious digital toy that dings endlessly on it's own that is often passed off as a child's instrument. While it's not an actual piano because it doesn't have any strings it does play quite like a piano. It does have a very pleasing bell like sound and from what I've heard so far and read they are meticulously tuned.

To be honest I find myself playing every time I'm near it, which is fantastic because it always piques' my sons interest which is the point of the instrument in the first place!
I think my son will be able to enjoy this little instrument for years to come and can actually instill in him an interest in music.

On a very wild side note I REALLY enjoy the unique sound of this thing. I would not be surprised if it doesn't end up on my next recording somewhere, so if you're looking for a unique sound to record this may be for you as well!

Comments about Schoenhut My First Piano II:

It's a toy piano with a chimey sound, I didn't realize it would sound so chimey when I ordered it but I like it. Feels sturdy, looks really nice. Have yet to have baby play with it but I'm sure it will do the job of introducing him to piano. Also came in good condition, I've seen other reviews complain that keys stick but none of mine do. Also, ordered the red one and the color is great.

This piano is a perfect first piano for a child. No, it does not sound like a large piano, but why would it? It is made for a child.
