OVERVIEW

MOTIF sounds, motivating features.

The MX series synthesizers feature carefully selected sounds taken from the Yamaha MOTIF XS. The MX49's powerful sonic palette is packed into a sleek 49-note version that fits today's on-the-go lifestyle. But the MX49 isn't just a synthesizer; it's designed to bridge the gap between hardware and software. By adding extensive audio and MIDI USB connectivity, advanced DAW and VST controller features and a complete suite of powerful music production software, the MX49 integrates hardware reliability with controller flexibility to give you the best of both worlds at a groundbreaking level of affordability.

Over 1000 sounds from the MOTIF Series

The MX series contains more than 1000 Voices derived directly from the world famous Yamaha MOTIF XS series. From realistic acoustic sounds like piano, electric piano, strings and drums to complex 8-element synth sounds, the MX has all of your favorite Motif XS Voices right at your fingertips. The MX even has a streamlined interface for instant hands-on selection of all those great Voices. The newly designed category selection makes it easier than ever to find the Voice you need. You can even edit and store your own sounds right onboard.

VCM effects

MX synthesizers come equipped with VCM effects, which simulate vintage effectors at the circuit level. Thesounds of the ˜70s are brought back to life, through simulating the hard-to-find vintage sounds of equalizer, flanger, phaser, and wah effects introduced by the keyboard legends of the era.

Easy Split/Layer performance mode for instant inspiration
Performance Mode on the Motifs has always been the place to find instant inspiration and the MX is no different. You can easily combine two Voices to play on the keyboard using the dedicated Split and Layer buttons each with their own intelligent arpeggiator and a dedicated Part for a drum track to create evocative Performances that feel like a whole band is playing. The 128 Performances on the MX49 are all user editable, but come programmed with the latest club friendly grooves

16-part multi timbral and 128-note polyphony
Each Performance contains not only the three sounds described above, but all the settings for a complete 16-Part Multi setting for play. You can switch between any of the 16 Parts without the sound cutting off. With 128 notes of polyphony there are plenty of notes to play even the densest sequences from your DAW. These features make the MX the perfect tone generator solution for live performance and live playback of DAW MIDI tracks.

Extensive hands-on controls for VSTs and DAWs
The MX also features solid knobs and durable buttons for controlling internal sounds, DAW parameters and VST instruments. The deceptively simple interface is combined with a remote template editor on your computer so any VST you own or any new VSTs you buy can be easily setup to be controlled by the MX. There are advanced integration templates for use with a variety of DAWs. When used with Cubase, there is even an AI knob so any parameter can be controlled by the large rotary encoder just by mousing over it. It's never been quicker to take full control of Cubase.

Bi-directional USB Audio/MID interfacing
But the MX doesn't just control software DAWs and VSTs; it's an audio interface as well. Just connect a USB cable to your computer and you can monitor all the sounds from your computer via the headphone output of the MX or listen to your DAW tracks by connecting the MX to external studio monitors or PA gear. The audio converters on the MX are made for professional music applications so everything on your computer -- even games -- will sound better when using the MX as the output. The MX interface is bi-directional so you can record the internal sounds of the MX directly to your computer, without ever going to the analog domain, for the highest possible quality.

A complete suite of music production software included
The MX series is the only hardware synth in its price range to come with a complete suite of music production software tools. The included Steinberg Cubase AI features 48 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks, notation, built-in VST effects, so with just the MX and AI you can do complete productions. But we didn't stop there; it comes bundled with Steinberg Prologue and the Yamaha YC-3B organ emulator so you have some compelling VSTs to get started.
Plus there are Remote Template editors for setting up controls of VSTs. Finally, Yamaha has worked with some third party developers to ensure that there will be fully functional cross platform editors available at release.

A lightweight design with a quality Yamaha keyboard

While almost all other keyboard controllers use inexpensive OEM keyboards, the MX features an expertly crafted keyboard that only Yamaha -- the world's largest keyboard manufacturer -- could produce. Weighing only 3.7kg (MX49) or 4.7kg (MX61), either synthesizer can be carried easily with one hand. MX synthesizers have a compact design so they are easy to carry to the gig and also fit easily into today's compact home music production studios

Complete analog and digital connectivity

In addition to the USB audio/MIDI port, the MX has a USB to Device port so you can connect USB devices for storing MX data to external memory and even playing back wave files directly from a USB stick. If you want to add a tablet or an MP3 player to your system just connect to the AUX input using a mini stereo cable and you are ready to go.

I have been doing home recording for the past 30 years and have had some very great though very expensive keyboards over that time. If you can get past the very inexpensive feel of the keyboard and entry-level action, this is quite possible the best bang-for-your-buck keyboard around! Intuitive easy control?? Great!! Sounds?? Jeez, there truly is a Motif soundset in there!! As easy to get around as some of the entry level PSR models, but the sounds are truly where this thing shines. EVERY patch shines and sparkles with the authenticity you expect from much more expensive boards and I have yet to find a patch that doesn't "fit" or "belong". Editing is a breeze, though there is no deep editing of individual patches- what's there is there for a reason. This is just what I've been looking for. I could not be happier.

I loved the sounds of the MX but the thing is just to cheaply made. The plastic feels thin and the keys were so light and cheap I was scared to break it just playing it.
There are times when you have to hit the keys harder to get sounds and I was to scared to do it for fear of breaking it.

If you are looking for an excellent cheap keyboard Syth you should buy that one. Light weight keys , great velocity and very responsive , great sounds (same exact MOTIF sounds "check out the BOMB (best of Motif Bank) for the MX61" and easy to use . you basically pay less for what you get .

Comments about Yamaha MX49 49 Key Music Synthesizer/Controller:

I will be using this keyboard for live performances, but I have limited skills on keys and will only be using it for pads. The Motif sounds are great. The 49 keys are a bit limiting for live performance, but the ease in changing octaves makes that moot for my use. I have found the directions on programming and saving "performances" a little vague and while I have attempted to make my own playlist of easily and quickly attainable sounds I have yet to get it where I need it to be. This challenge is partly my own naiveté, but even given that caveat I feel the directions are not easy to understand.

Comments about Yamaha MX49 49 Key Music Synthesizer/Controller:

This thing is great. It would nice if it allowed at least one more part to run an arpeggiator. This would allow one to create full edm sound live. Seriously. It has 2 plus the rhythm, but this does limit what you can do sometimes. As far as 70s sounds yes yes yes. For the price point and what is included it is a great purchase. Use a DAW for sequencing and you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Yamaha MX49 49 Key Music Synthesizer/Controller:

Great sound engine attached to a budget keyboard action; however, I was aware of this going in and am very pleased with the Yamaha MX-49 overall given the price point. I use this instrument mostly for the horn and string sounds as a supplement to a Hammond XK-1c and Yamaha Clavinova in a contemporary church band and am very pleased. I also frequently MIDI into the MX-49 from the Clavinova such that I can access the very nice MX-49 acoustic and electric piano sounds from a higher-quality, eighty-eight key, weighed-action keyboard. Doing this has prolonged the life of the aging Clavinova as well.

Comments about Yamaha MX49 49 Key Music Synthesizer/Controller:

I called Yamaha as soon as it came out in 61 key and their techs couldnt answer my questions about playing it live. Niether could Musicians Friend. When it is on if you switch banks and come back to a bank it remembers what preset to stay on (in that bank) till you you turn it off. NOBODY knew this. So when they put it in sale as a re-stock 49 key cheap I took a chance and bought it. WOW! Sounds great, menu diving isnt bad at all. As far as the keys being cheesy I dont see it. It plays like a Synth, want better buy a Digital Piano. I played it live the other night with my Yamaha Digital Piano and it kicked! Just buy it.

Comments about Yamaha MX49 49 Key Music Synthesizer/Controller:

I am primarily a guitarist for our small contemporary service, but occasionally play keyboard. I purchased an MX49 for use at church, and wanted the same setup at home. The Mx 49 has presets that were instantly usable for me, especially the pads and strings. Great for adding ambient layers, and if I was a better keyboard player it is capable of so much more.

The keybed action is not as nice as some of the older Yamaha synths (SY and DX series), but it didn't take long to adjust to the feel.
