This is absolutely a great board. Sounds are awesome and everything is right at the touch of a finger. Even without the manual, only took a couple of days to move around. I compare it to the MM6 I own but maybe just one step above considering both are about the same except the PSR S500 has just a little more to work with. I especially like the on board sustain. Great invention. Great work Yamaha. Guess my Triton LE will have to go in the closet for a few days. Can't go wrong with this board and the MM6 backing it up.
- Was this a gift?:
It gives me great pleasure to review the Yamaha PSR-S500 . I am an amateur musician and currently own this keyboard (previously owned a Casio CTK -770 so a big jump to this one!) Now to the main thing, the keyboard is stacked with lots of realistic voices . The voices such as the Live! Grand Piano Sweet! Soprano Saxophone, Sweet! Flute, Live! Strings really makes this arranger keyboard comparable to the very expensive synths available today. The remaining panel voices are also pleasing. The styles covering a wide genre, are really good and doesn`t over interfere with your playing. With rich style control options of having 3 intros, 4 main variations & 3 endings, both the professional and the home enthusiast would have enough to present their musical expression! A miss-out though, with regards to styles is the lack of styles from the eastern part of the world. With the Music Database feature, playing popular songs becomes easy and fun! The DSP effects section is also good, but feel that dedicated realtime control over equalizing the signals still remains on the wish list! The options of using registration setups, OTS`s are useful for live performances. The USB device (for SMF storage/playback) and PC connectivity are standout features compared to otherwise equally good keyboards(such as Roland E-09) in this price range. Overall, highly recommended!
This is my first experience as an owner of an arranger keyboard and let me tell you they are different from the garden variety portables. The keyboard is well built and looks very modern. The voices blew me away; this sounds like the PSR-1000 from a few years ago, a big improvement against my Casio CTK-671. Styles are great, wide variety of styles to choose from. Takes a little time to navigate the screen options and it is much better to use your one touch settings and set it up for the most useful sounds. I had the chance to use the USB port with my flash drive and it reads it with no issues. I have not used the keyboard with the computer, since Yamaha does not include the USB-to-Host cable. My only complaints/markdowns are the 32-note polyphony, and the lack of the USB cable. This keyboard is great for the keyboardist who wants to step up from beginner to an intermediate instrument without having to pay over $1k. Great sound, very realistic patterns, computer interaction, etc. Overall, a great buy.
