I never was much for gadgets and 'bells & whistles'. Put me behind the keys with some good sounds (B3, Fender Rhodes, different pianos) and I'm good to go. But within the last year I found a need to arrange fill parts for live performance and I haven't used a sequencer since the 80s. I currently play with a Kurzweil PC88 (over 10 years old) and run it through the rack version of the Korg Triton which I've loaded up nicely. I also have a Korg CX-3 for the Hammond sounds when I play live. The choice was to buy a Korg TR-88 with on-board sequencer or the Yamaha QY-100. I was PLEASANTLY surprised with the QY-100. I sat for no more than 2 hours reading the manual (which is about my patience level for gadgets) and started going to work. Once you record you first song you'll get the knack on how to use it and your following songs will go quick. I especially LOVE the copy/paste function for tracks and measures! When I bought the QY-100 I originally thought "I'll just run the Triton through the sequencer". But the on-board sounds and drum kits are great. The piano sounds aren't the best but they'll do. What I enjoyed the most was the nice blend of Yamaha's classic variations on DX-7 sounds, Analog and Digital sounds. I haven't run my Triton through the sequencer yet - everything I need is already on-board the QY-100. Get the power adapter - this thing goes through AA batteries like there's no tomorrow! The optional memory chip is handy too. Once I learned how to use the QY-100 I filled the memory fast!

Great little midi device

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I bought this as a stand alone midi recorder so that I wouldn't have to fool with computer issues. It does that and a lot more. I have had fun playing with it and the sounds are great. I haven't used the amp sim but I have used it to tune. I have an old DR5 and I dug it out to see if I could work the two together and I'm playing with that now. The drawback is memory size. You can have 20 songs but 2 songs fill it up so you need a memory card which are hard to find. You probably can put a thousand songs on a 16MB card but the internal memory must be about 256K. Midi files are small.

Yamaha QY 100

By Rick N. Bacher

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

Great product - from what I have seen it is the only choice for accompaniment. The features are great but you do need to spend time with it to learn. I would buy this over anything in its class. The sound is great, interface good. Buy the AC adapter. Keys do not sense velocity, but you can adjust it and there is a random velocity setting that is pretty good - sounds live. It has a memory card slot, but forget it - it's an older Smart Media format that you can't buy except from suppliers that choose to keep making it for keyboards and other devices like this. It does NOT use SD cards. There is an adapter available to go from Smart Media to XD, using a maximum of 128M but don't bother. Buy a USB to MIDI adapter (I had good luck with a Yamaha UX16) and you're set. Load and store sets/songs with your laptop or PC all you want. It will also connect via serial or Mac accessory cables. Overall, this is a great buy. Get one.

Excelent for live performances.

By FamilyTies

from Foristell, MO

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

This would be perfect for live performances, except it needs more internal memory. Some songs can take up to 30% of available memory, which means can only have 3 songs in active memory at one time. Not too convenient for live performance. Requires constant reloading of songs.

won't regret buying it

By Ricky-emgma

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

i got this, not exactly knowing everything it could do, but if you want to hear some things this has done for successful artists, check out Agoraphobic Nosebleed and listen to their drums, created with this and a drum machine, i never knew they used fake drums until i read about them on their site (very high quality sounding), they use this exact piece of equipment for their drumming effects have it hooked to the drum machine...to get an idea of what the synths sound like, check out Burzum, the cd is called Hlidskjalf, the second cd made by this artist after he went solo, their other material is all black metal, so you cant hear what this sounds like through, i've been slowly learning how to use it, it's somewhat difficult to figure out, but it's well worth it in the long run, i'll be using this for my band, and for a solo ambient project of mine, very fun to use

adapter details

By jbake

from oxnard, CA

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

This product did not come with an a.c. adapter. NO clues are given (on the unit or in the manual) for the polarity. It takes a 12-volt, tubular-style a.c. adapter, at least 500 milliamps, POSITIVE inner sleeve, NEGATIVE outer sleeve.

Yamaha QY100

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I have the QY 100 and it rocks!!! I love the sounds it produces and the way its easy to step write your user patterns in a song. The user patterns have 8 tracks and when in song mode you can add 16 tracks of sound to it making a orchetra symphony. It tool awhile to learn, but its worht it, as one reviewer said you have to read the manual to get the full education of this product. I have it connected through my CZ101 through MIDI to control the sounds and then have connected to my drum machine through Midi to reinforce the the drum sounds. The sequencer controls the tempo and playback of all the sounds being produced. I love this little machine.

Great for Novice with Potential for Growth

By Gretsch-StratMan

from St Michaels, Maryland

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

With all the complex choices now available, I was having trouble finding a SIMPLE, INTEGRATED solution to meet my needs: a simple process that can sound great(I wanted backing band sounds to accompany my electric guitar without having to fight with a mountain of learning complex layers of gear and tools). Since I am NOT aiming at a professional result, SIMPLICITY with underlying potential for really great sound was my goal. Combine the QY100/XG with Yamaha's XGworks 3.0 and Yamaha's IBM connection cable to a PC HOST for:- Playing/editing/downloading songs - Playing/recording your electric instrument or voice accompanying those songs thru the QY100's built-in Mixer for all kinds of great sounding effects (reverb, chorus, delay, distortion, EQ, Flange, Wah, Tremolo, etc)- Because these components are INTEGRATED, each plays with the other without additional gear (Ie, playback of XG midi songs can be sent from XGworks thru the QY100's XG tone generator to obtain those fabulous XG sounds)- Take advantage of typical workstation tools plus an included set of unusual tools to make music creation, playback and adjustment more simple than thought possible (Ie, AutoArranger, Import, Voice to music, etc)- I feed the final mixed headphone output of the QY100 to either Powered speakers, a road amplifier, or the "line-in" port of my PC sound card for recordings.- Even the Manuals and Internet Tutorials are great!

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I own almost every sequencer and drum machine on the market. The QY-100 is a full blown, pro-quality unit, that is portable and contains tons of high quality XG sounds. The learning curve is steep at first, but once you delve into the advanced features, this little unit has much to offer the professional musician. You can start with a simple sequence, and refine it using the built-in mixer for a complete, polished product. Drum kits galore round out the posibillities, and make exploring an adventure. Definitely the most full featured portable unit in it's price range- but be prepared break out the rechargables, 'cause it spits out AA's like they're going out of style. A portable adapter is highly recommended. If you have great musical ideas, don't wait, grab one now, while they're still cheap.

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

If you have an eternity to figure this thing out then buy it. Yes, you save a lot of money, but it's not user friendly and paying some more will save you from pulling your hair out. I have used this type of equipment for 10 years and even the oldest sequencers were less complicated than this thing. It's a nice tool for somebody who has 12 hours to sit and try to piece something together with it otherwise just pay some more and get something easier to use.

Accompaniment and Arranging ? Great machine

By Alex in VA

from Burke, VA

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I had several drum machines: Alesis SR-16 that is very basic drums machine, the Boss DR-880, fully loaded but lacks of flexibility when sections of patterns are important (and they are always); the Yamaha RY9 which is not really flexible and it is being discontinued. But from all of them, the Yamaha QY100 is simply the finest but? you need to get the best out of it. Indeed, I got a QY100 and I worked a little with it, nice features and a complete orchestra for accompaniment. However you may get quickly disappointed if you don?t read the manual page by page because it may look to your eyes like a black box impossible to get tamed. It has a big manual, but you need to read patiently thru out it. Follow the examples and practice with them. It took me some 2 months understand what I can do before I was able to extract some beautiful melodies out of it.I?m a singer guitarist, I play a lot but I?m not a professional musician. This machine is making me look like a pro. I?m arranging the complete songs in there, then just press Play and you are good to go. Some important tips for you (I wish somebody could have told them when I needed them):- Don?t mess too much with patterns, just try to use what you have, once you dig a little, you will see that you don?t need to create any new pattern, just use what is already in there.- You got to learn how to type note by note while editing songs. The manual will show you how to edit patterns and chords for a song.- The most popular time signature is 4/4. It seems to fit very well the most of the QY100 songs.Alex in VA

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I use the QY100 in church to back up the choir and guest musicians. It is a great value for the money. Drawbacks: The available memory allows the QY to hold about 3 songs (depedning on size). This makes the machine nopt very practical for live settings, particularly since loading from the SmartMedia disk is slow. The QY chews up batteries quickly, making th optional adapter a must have.

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I purchased a QY100 about two years ago. Currently, I use to produce sound tracks for CD presentations by local vendors and small businesses and they are amazed at what this thing does. It took about six months of trial and error to actually get the results I wanted but it was six months well spent. Some of the capabilities aren't clearly defined in the manual, but once you actually hear the results you will be amazed. Note: The optional power adapter is a must have.

Good for the $$$

By Sane333

from Nebraska

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

I've owned one for about two years now. I'll have to say it does have a minor learning curve. Patience is required. The idea of this machine running on batteries is ridiculous. I've only got batteries to last about an hour. And after a few minutes you can notice the polyphony drop. THE BEST THING ABOUT IT is the sound quality. You're paying 3/4 sound quality and 1/4 sequencing. I do wish there were more snare sounds. Also, the AC power supply is cheaply constructed. After two years of studio/live use the cord is shorted. Overall, I'm very impressed with this unit. I'm not regretting buying it, although now I know I'm sticking with Yamaha sequencing! If you've got the cash, you might want to check out the Rm1X. Not that much more $$$ and so many more features! Trust me.

Everything and more

By RChatham

from Elk City, OK

Comments about Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment Tool:

The QY100 is everything I expected and more. Everytime I sit down to work with it I learn something new about it that is incredible. This makes songwriting too easy. The sound is very good quality. You are definitely getting the most out of your money with this unit. Every songwriter should have one of these. Make sure you buy an adapter if you purchase this unit. The 'AA' batteries have got to be somebody's idea of a joke. But, I guess, it does come in handy if you are on the road, for an hour or so, anyway. I haven't used it to download midi files to my computer yet, so I can't give any info there except that you will have to either buy a CCIBM cable to download to a computer or a Smartmedia card to save and download midi, providing your computer can read the card. Personally, the CCIBM cable is good enough for me. These guys will take of you. I called costumer service a couple of times to add to my order and every time I was treated respectfully, and without any bad attitudes that I've gotten from the other places before. Thanks guys, you make it easy.
