I bought this keyboaard expecting too much, but that was my fault. Yamaha has really give you good value for this keyboard. At the price, there is no other synth that is as complex as this one. I must say I was not satisfied with the piano sounds, but I am really picky when it comes to those.I really enjoyed the electric keyboard sounds. If you take time to learn how to use this keyboard, it's well worth it. I hardly use any of the presets anymore, because the sounds I've made are pretty nice.If you are not a keyboardist, get this keyboard, there's nothing that would please you more for the money. If you are a keyboardist, get this keyboard, but don't get your hopes up too much. It's a nice keyboard for the money, the quality is excellent, and it works fine after I've dropped it multiple times. The biggest plus for me is how light this keyboard is.So all in all, Yamaha did a pretty good job.

I was just reading over some of the revews, and I pretty much agree. The piano sound is spinechilling,IF you can set the paremeters right. The keys, sadly have a slight "real piano" feel, but not much, poor. So if you can set the piano sample right,(and it took me a week) you're pretty much set. But then there's the other sounds: the pads are mildly fantastic, but what got me was the Leads, and the drum kits. GREAT DYNAMIC SOUND, at least there. It was really easy getting started, just turn it on! The Category Select makes it easy to find the sound you want, and the manual was orginized.(in a understanable way) But I wasn't happy with the software, not much of quality. But, all in all, this is a GREAT keyboard, a good bang for your buck!

        Biggest Problem: The keys

        By tonydapianoguy

        from San Jose, CA

This was my first synth. Im a musician at a local church and used it mostly for organs, leads, and brass. The electric keyboards on it are really good, althugh the acoustic piano isnt what youd expect from Yamaha. Other than that, its a great secondary keyboard!

        Still Awesome

        By Timothy-bKR2D

I posted a review back in November, 2003 about this synthesizer. Today, I still own it without giving a thought of parting with it. For the most part, I use it as a midi controller to my Roland JV-1010 that I bought back in 2002. That's not going anywhere either. Together they continue to make beautiful music. Even though I want a Motif (that I can't afford right now), the S03 and I have a special bond that will be for many years to come.

        Good Second Board

        By disthes

        from Saint Robert, MO

This board has been excellent for a second board. I play in the church and gospel musicians are often required to play the chords plus a strong bass line. The finger bass sound of this board is simply oustanding. My only two drawbacks are that the keys are not weighted and it has only 61 keys. Recommend going to the S08 if you are planning to use it as a primary board.

        Great second board

        By Killakeyz

        from Syracuse, New York

I own the so3 first off all if you are a piano player the most important sound is the piano and the so3 lacks in acoustic piano sounds but on the other it has outstanding rhodes the best ive heard on a synth besides the motif and it has nice brass, reed, lead, strings, bass, the sound effects are good, and the synth sound are outstanding but the guitar sounds sucky it so hard to find a keyboard with good guitar sound i think korg has that on lock. It has goos velocity control and it has synth action keys. All in all this is a great top board. If you are a gigging musician don't play this by itself

If you can only afford one keyboard...

Non-weighted, 61 keys... but the sounds!! If you're a 'real' keyboard player, you already have a 'proper' piano - this is your second keyboard! Brass, Strings, etc all outstanding! If you're a studio/hobbyist, this will give you all the sounds you crave. If you can only afford one keyboard for your studio, this will do you great (see the S09 if you can actually play piano...) Through misfortune and bad luck, I wound up using this one night as my only keyboard at a gig - and it did just fine. Despite non-weighted action, it plays acceptably.

        Excellent Value

        By MikeMetaphor

        from Tyler, Texas

I've owned this board for over a year and have often said if it bit the dust I'd buy another S03. And I would. But no need to worry about that with Yamaha quality. This board is hands-down, the best synth available for 5 bills. I played a comparably priced Roland and the decision was a no-brainer. (And I love and own Roland equipment!) But in this price range, Yamaha wins out! You show me a better polyphonic, velocity-sensitive keyboard with hundreds of killer sounds for $500 and I'll buy it. PS: When I play the intro for Van Halen's "Jump" on this board, every head in the club spins around cuz the sound is EXACTLY like the original (it's a preset, no tweaking required). One of many cool sounds on the S03!

Can't beat it for the price-

        By Boogie Man-2SHRa

And if you can't compose, play or sound good with this then you won't with a more expensive setup either. The sounds can't be beaten for the money, great value. And they are adjustable. Killer deal.

        Pretty Impressive

        By Bird Man

This keyboard is very impressive. Especailly for the price that is reasonable. The piano and organ sounds are wonderful. If you need a keyboard that is light weight and will produce for you this is the one.
