Comments about Lanikai SZW-T Solid Zebrawood Tenor Ukulele:

Extremely beautiful woods with well-aligned joints. Plus, there are details you wouldn't expect on a uke at this price, such as a two-tone laminated skunk stripe.

The neck was perfectly shaped and super comfortable, and the action was perfect, making it very easy to play. The zebrawood tone is warm and full, but lacks brightness and upper harmonics.

Unfortuantely, the finish work was poor - rough, sharp, splintered edges were present where the panels mate up and the matte finish had lots of defects in it, such as sawdust, hairs and sags. The intonation was also WAY off - almost 15 cents on the G string.

Still, I would have gladly done a little sanding and refinishing, and made a new saddle, except for one thing - two of the tuners were defective - the buttons weren't properly attached to the shaft and one buzzed/rattled when playing.

Really a shame that Lanikai's quality control is so poor, as this would have been a great uke with only a tiny bit more attention to detail.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this ukulele! It's got a lovely tone, good string tension making it easy to play, and I love the wood. It's actually a better instrument than I expected for the price.

Nice Ukulele - problems with finish quality

          By Michael Greenwood

Comments about Lanikai SZW-T Solid Zebrawood Tenor Ukulele:

Great Solid wood Ukulele for the price.
Be carefull with purchasing used through the website. It may cause problems with exchanges if the item isn't to your liking and the price happens to change.

Musicians Friend could have done a lot better with the exchange policy and not made me go through two requests for a supervisor to have the exchange done. As an FYI they really don't seem to do exchanges, it's really a return, a credit, and another purchase. So if there happens to be a price change it becomes a headache.

This review is more about the seller then the Ukulele. Both aspects are important for an online instument dealer.

Musicians Friend is doing the right thing in the end.

I'll be more impressed if they allow this somewhat negative post to be publish publicly. If it's removed I would lose respect for them as merchants.
This is a very nice Ukulele, great grover tuners, aquilla strings (saves you the hassle of changing strings right away), It's also very nice to look at.
The finish around the binding and back stripe was very poor. Large gaps and visable putty / filler.
This seems to be a common problem with this Uke Model. I've noticed a number of "Factory Blemish" Ukuleles for sale on the internet with the same problem. I didn't expect to recieve that from Musicians Friend when they rated their used model as A-1.

I have sent my original purchase back and am waiting for the replacement.
I purchase my used Ukeulele from Muscians Friend at almost half price of what they normally sell the Uke for. That was a great deal.

The problem with this deal was dealing with my defective finish and return. They initialy wanted me to pay the difference in price for the return. Meaning I would lose the sale price and basicly have to pay double to recieve a replacement or just return the ukulele and walk away.

Muscians Friend eventually agreed to honor the first price I payed, I have to imagine that was due to the inital ukulele being rated A-1 by them and having a flaw.

          Big D

Comments about Lanikai SZW-T Solid Zebrawood Tenor Ukulele:

It's too bad they couldn't put the extra effort into making it play as well as it looks. It really looks better than pictured. Maybe I got a lemon? I've been impressed with other models I've tried in stores, but, the stores didn't carry their tenors.
I almost spent the extra hundred for the cutaway electric. Glad I didn't.
Hey Lanakai... Nice looking product. Please get it together.
Re: The SZW-T Tenor Ukulele... It's a beautiful piece of wood. The overall design and hardware are stunning.
Sadly, this thing buzzed like a banshee! Third string above the 4th fret... Bad. Slight buzz on the 1st and 2nd as well. I almost sent it back. Shimming the saddle went way to high, ruining the action.
However, the string spacing is as advertised, comfortable for my large hands, and when played with a very light touch, the buzz is barely noticeble. I plan to add a pickup and experiment with different guages of string. It's obvious they built it, strung it, and gave no thought to playing it and setting it up.
I'll also be fine sanding it where they couldn't be troubled to smooth out the rough edges.
Why am I keeping it? It shows potential and I like a challenge.
Not so much. Go to a store where you can try and buy.... I will next time.
