Overview

A collaborative piece of art on canvas by one of the world's best drummers.

Jose Pasillas II, known for his influential catalog of work with Incubus, created "One" through the new medium of capturing rhythmic performance and putting it to canvas in a debut collection called "Abstract Rhythm + Landscapes."

Measuring 85" x 30" on canvas, "One" showcases the spirit of rhythm in a powerful way. Like a painter using brushes with oils, Pasillas built the artwork's visual through lit drumsticks of different colors and temperatures. "One" combines a rhythmic visual with extensive hand-augmented imagery from Pasillas - a visual vortex built from a combination of aerosol, paint, and ink.

Of the artwork, Pasillas states:
"In my personal life, I believe we are all connected as one. I love the ghostly Christ image in the back¦it is insane to think that the background came from the drums. That inspired me to do the imagery in the center of the piece."

Jose Pasillas II
Jose Pasillas is a father, a son, a brother, a lover, a musician, and a visual artist. He was raised in Calabasas, California, where he co-founded the band Incubus. As a child, Jose played air drums. Whenever he heard Prince's "Take Me With You," he threw his arms around, replicating the rhythm of the song. When he turned fifteen, he got his first drum kit, "a crappy kit with a kitchen chair as a drum throne." His path as a musician was solidified when former Guns n' Roses drummer Stephen Adler, who was their neighbor, stumbled into the Pasillas' home uninvited while they were having Sunday breakfast. Adler asked Jose where his kit was, sat down on that kitchen chair and played "Mr. Brownstone." The next day, Adler showed up with a proper throne for Jose. Not only is Jose now a talented musician, he is also a loving father. His passion lies with the arts, but his love lies with his family. Jose's Mexican heritage and heart has always been important to him and makes up much of who he is as an individual. These influence his art as a musician and fine artist, pouring his soul into visual and rhythmic tales of his affair with creativity.
