Evolved from the lute, the modern has four pairs of metal strings and is typically played using a pick (or plectrum). In the first half of the 20th century, mandolins were extremely popular and, being relatively easy to play, a large amount of music was written and published for the instrument. In the United States the mandolin has long been associated with country and bluegrass music, with players such as Bill Munroe doing much to popularize the instrument, which had been seen earlier in the 20th century as a fad. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, rock and folk-rock musicians such as Levon Helm from The Band and John Paul Jones & Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin did much to popularize the instrument, as did the distinctive sound on Rod Stewart's "Maggie May". Contemporary musicians such as Decemberists and the White Stripes employ the mandolin with great effect. As with everything we sell, all our Mandolins are supported by our price & satisfaction guarantees and free standard shipping now applies to all orders over $25, including many heavy items.
