A microphone in its simplest form is a sensor that converts sounds (which are essentially mechanical vibrations) into an electrical voltage signal. The different types of microphones all perform the same function, but just use different methods to generate the electrical signal. At Musician's Friend we try to simplify the microphone buying experience by categorizing our microphones by how they are used, rather than by type. Generally speaking, recording microphones are synonymous with condenser microphones and live microphones are generally considered to be the less sensitive dynamic microphones. There are exceptions, of course – there is no rule that says you cannot record with a dynamic microphone, in fact they are ideal for recording guitar amps & many vocalists, including U2's Bono use a dynamic microphone for recording vocals. We also have a great specialty microphone section. This includes instrument-specific mics such as harmonica mics as well as Ribbon microphones. Our buyers make sure we always have the top brands in stock, including Blue Microphones, Shure Microphones and AKG Microphones. As with everything we sell, all our microphones are supported by our price & satisfaction guarantees and free standard shipping applies to all orders except heavy items.
