Comments about Avid Pro Tools 10 EDU Student with Free Upgrade to Pro Tools 11:

I am a 10 year musician who dabbles in a bit of bass, guitar, keys, uk, harmonica, and vocals. I bought this product because I am a semester from graduating at my current school. GREAT DEAL. The system is a bit tricky to install, and if you're using a laptop (like most students) you'll need to download ASIO4ALL to configure your sound card to the right settings (very easy). With the help of forums and youtube videos, I have been able to master simple single track recording, as well as midi instrument recording with a keyboard.

CUSTOMERS BEWARE: I was told by a MF customer service rep that I would need to purchase an "I-LOK" to make the kit work. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The kit comes with an I-LOK, and now I have to deal with returning the product (though shipping was paid for), and being out an extra 50 doll hairs (they won't let me use words related to money apparently) until they reimburse me.

All in all, I couldn't be happier. The amount of preset instruments in this program is incredible, and you can fine tune them all to your liking. I am thoroughly impressed with the product and the price.

Comments about Avid Pro Tools 10 EDU Student with Free Upgrade to Pro Tools 11:

ProTools is awesome. Powerful application capable of producing any top quality audio for any application. Not an easy program to learn, but worth it. Take a class, get a book or two. It will take a while for you to find and use all the features, because it is loaded with them. It is to sound what Photoshop is to pictures.

Comments about Avid Pro Tools 10 EDU Student with Free Upgrade to Pro Tools 11:

It works perfect. It comes with an iLock. The main difference between the student edition, from my understanding, is the student edition can only do up to 64 tracks and it can not do 5.0 surround sound. Other than that it's just like protools 10 full version. You do have to prove that you are a student, but that process is fairly easy.

Great software. only problems i had were with installing. it is vary vague with the manual on how to install, and there are quite a few of patche and other things you have to search for and download before using (the ILOK usb key gave me quite a few issues at first). My teacher at my audio video broadcasting program suggested to me that you didnt need the m audio box anymore for PT10, i found out that was false, i had to find a patch to download to get around it, but you still cant use a usb microphone so it is kind of pointless if you dont get the m audio box. I have had problems getting it to read my headphones too for some reason, im sure its a easy fix....... But I use Pro Tools 9 at my school and am familiar with Pro tools products, and it is still a great piece of software, very powerful.

          Definitely an upgrade

          By John Kolodgy

          from New York

Comments about Avid Pro Tools 10 EDU Student with Free Upgrade to Pro Tools 11:

Here are the Pros and Cons

          Pros:
          1. Much better time tracking than ProTracks.
          2. By using the onboard click track set to the proper tempo, the "grid" system of editing is awesome. I can easily create loops...something I found nearly impossible with ProTracks.
          3. A midi-playing program, xpand2, comes bundled with it...(if you dont have a midi controller, this fixes that.) You can program drums or instruments with it.
          4. Clip Gain easily changes the volume of your tracks...almost instantly!
          5. Included in this is package is a CD with samples and loops...good for getting your automated rhythm section done without a lot of pain.
          6. Comes with an iLok thumb drive that disables the program without it being plugged in, which keeps anyone else from messing with it.
          7. It works very well with the Mbox Mini 3gen.

          9. You can import wav and mp3 formats to tracks in a new session.
          10. You can easily make your song "bounce to" an MP3 without limitation.

          Cons:
          1. The sheer number of steps that the I had to go through seemed pretty daunting...and I didnt think it was going to work, but in the end, it worked out.
          2. You need to be able to prove that you are a STUDENT to use this software. The proof process was pretty easy though.
          3. There is no step-by-step instructions that walk you through activating the product, only a loose guide. I could've used a little "do this...then do that" during the setup.
          4. The user guide DOES NOT have a picture guide for the GUI that identifies what the buttons are and what they do. It would be a great addition to a "quick user" guide. (You Tube does have a good deal of how-to videos though.)
          5. The program will not work for editing without an interface being plugged in, so if you dont have one, you will need to get one. Even if you are just doing post-production...you will have to have your interface plugged in.
          6. Because it uses non-destructive recording as a default, all of the tracks that you record are stored in your session folder. You can manually (quickly) delete them, but the program still tracks them as being there and will give you errors unless you use Pro Tools to (slowly) remove them.
Before owning Pro Tools 10, my primary recording program was ProTracks (it came bundled with my GNX4). I had a lot of latency issues with that setup and I was pretty discouraged with the whole process. So, I bought an Mbox Mini 3gen for the interface and a copy of Pro Tools 10 EDU Student and put them to work...and...if there is latency in this setup, I can't tell.

Bottom Line Up Front: It is well worth the money to purchase this program for aspiring rock stars or even hobbyists like me.

The Musicians Friend write-up does a good job of describing the features.
The quality of Pro Tools 10 is well refined and far exceeds the software that I have used before. The GUI is professional and very functional. The sound quality is superb!
The price of the Student Edition is VERY GOOD considering [it is written that] it has the same unlimited features as the full price version. As far as I am concerned...the value of this product is 100%.
