    Great sound and simplified operation!

The TASCAM DP-01FX/CD 8-Track Hard Disk Recorder features the one-knob-per-function design that has made TASCAM cassette Portastudios the choice of thousands of musicians. It shatters the confusing page-shift-menu interface found in most other digital recorders. The DP-01FX digital recorder has 2 - 1/4" TRS mic/line inputs, 2 phantom-powered XLR microphone inputs for connecting condenser mics, plus a guitar-level input. Its 8 tracks record at uncompressed CD quality to an internal 40GB hard drive, and a stereo master track is available for recording a mix. Each channel has a 45mm volume fader, plus dedicated controls for pan, effects send, high EQ, and low EQ. An LCD display shows meters, audio editing settings, and locate points. It has a USB 2.0 jack for file backup and transferring mixes to a computer. There are analog RCA line outputs, a headphone out and S/PDIF line output. The DP-01FX also has a multi-effects processor for adding effects to an instrument during recording and a reverb processor for adding effects during a mix.

The onboard CD burner makes backups and mastering a snap.

I bought this unit in a pawn shop about 4 weeks agoIt has an awsome bass sound which i cant get on my computer. Someone said in an earlier review that it is good for demos and not for release quality. (Not true''). Well''' if you are computer liteate and use your dsp 24 bit effects in oyur preferred wave editor you will definitly get radio quality after the transformation depending on your mastering skills. I just bought a software pogram called har-bal (harmonic balancing) and i came to realize that if you dump your tracks onto your computer for editing you will be blown away.this unit is better served as a complimentry item in computer recording. I have a high end sound card and playback my computer recordings into the tascam and apply minimal effects and boy what a sound i get. Burning tracks for me is a choice between the computer and the tascam.I read an article just recently that there is no such thing as release quality.Jyoti mishra wrote a number one on a tascam multi track tape recorder. So this unit is more than enough to give you the opportunity to be heard on radio. just take your time and see your computer and your tascam as the one machine as I do. The imputs in the tascam suck but a berringher mixer with its own effects will more than make up for it. What this machine cannot do, your computers effects will more than make up fot it. Well done Tascam

I guess this machine would be user-friendly, as advertised, if the input jacks and buss switches weren't so cheap. Interupted signal paths can be very frustrating, even if you're just a singer/songwriter.I bought mine last summer. Six weeks later the hard-drive blew up. It took weeks to get it fixed and I had to pay cross-country shipping. Now I'm dealing with cheap switches and jacks which will mostly stop functioning altogether after the warranty expires. Wish I had my $ back.

    Unbelievable Quality & Value

    By mrbsgreen

    from Grayson, KY

It is actually easier than the analog models to use. If you have any experience recording, you can literally unpack it and crank out songs! It is far more value than any software and is "idiot-proof"! Beginners will have an easy time. The preset guitar settings would be nice as a processor floor unit; the tube settings sound better than Line 6 to my ears.

Still thinking about this one? Just buy it.

I had a bunch of little concerns about this recorder before it arrived, but about halfway through reading the manual I was completely stoked. You can put your songs in any order you want before burning them to disk, even choosing the length of pause between songs! I don't know why this excites me so much, but it really does. The sound quality is great. Its EASY to learn. I had it for about four hours before I had a great sounding song on CD. There are things I would change in the mix, but really good for my first try! I would recommend a condenser mic and preamp . I went direct with the mic using the built-in phantom power to test it out, but the preamp just made a world of difference. Maybe you'll need a few accessories on top of just the unit alone (good headphones and/or monitors) but that's the way it goes for us musicians, right?

    Great Machine

    By anthony3690

    from Austin, TX

I purchased this a few days ago and I already have many quality songs on a cd. The price may be a little steep, but in my opinion it's well worth it. Very easy to use (I'm very stupid when it comes to technology). I tried out Cakewalk and Lambda, both are too confusing, both are products not worth the time of a busy musician. Keep it simple and go with this. You wont be sorry.

Tascam Hit A Grand Slam Home Run With Me!

    By NOYB(None of Your Business)

from I Live In A Van Down By The River

For me, this recorder will work out for a very long time to come. I am a destined to stay solo 12 string guitar player and vocalist and this recorder works out just fine for me. 8 tracks is plenty for what I do. I almost sprung for their model with 24 tracks, but what on God's green earth would I as a soloist do with 24 tracks? Just be more confusion for me is all I can see. The manual that came with this recorder was simple enough for me to understand and within a couple of days was laying down tracks. I did however buy the two DVD tutorials that Tascam has on Portastudio recording which I might add have been very useful for me as well. The onboard CD burner is awesome too and I have to say that the recordings sound like I went to some major recording studio. I am impressed. Big bang for the buck is all I can say here. This is a digital machine that thinks it's a analog machine. So all you recording geeks out there who still prefer the sound of analog over digital then this is the machine for you. I really cannot add much more here other than the fact I am a happy camperwith this machine and cannot really say anything negative about it and the things that are negative are not really worth mentioning here. If you are destined to stay a solo artist I highly recommend this unit. I rest my case.

    Great 4 D Money

    By Teddy

    from Miami, Atlanta & Chicago

This is a great unit for any song writer who want 2 just put down his or her ideals. There are some fauls, but hey you can't beat it for the money. Tech support can be a drag but once you are able to reach them there are very helpful.

Great Recording, Easy to learn. Not enough inputs.

This piece of equipment is great to start out with. I've had it since December and its worked great ever since. It has a very crisp, clean tone and doesn't break. It has enough tracks and you can bounce them if you need more. It is very protable and light and has 40GB of memory, all that you will ever need. The manual tells you everything you need to know (if you even need much help). The only problem is the amount of inputs. I've tried recording bands and we have to record drums using PA systems because we couldn't fit the mics in 2 inputs. If you are planning on recording a lot at one time, save another $300 up for a quality mixer and run that into the system. This basically replaces the computer because it is able to burn CD's. In all, the quality and value of this product is really high, it just needs a few more inputs. But you can't ask much more from an 8 track mixer.

    An Easy To Use Recorder

    By essop

I didn't want to take to much time to learn in depth how to use recording equiptment, and this was the perfect choice for me... Great quality and simple to use, editing is a bit tricky, but it's a learning process not matter what you get.
