Complete 8-track digital recorder with an incomplete product name for collectors.
Thanks to a misprint at the factory, you can own one of a few DP-02CFs with the name "Portastud" emblazoned on its casing! It's an 8-track digital recorder you'll be especially proud to take anywhere, and a joke that never gets old.
Special introductory offer: FREE 1GB Compact Flash Card Included.
Recording doesn't get any easier than with the DP-02CF Digital Portastud. TASCAM's DP-02CF combines 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastud interface--designed for musicians who want to record quickly and have fun. A matched pair of TASCAM mic pres features XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar input for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.
The DP-02CF records two channels at a time to an included 1GB compact flash card - with enough space for a dozen songs or more. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown. You can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection for MP3 encoding or CD burning from your Mac or PC. The TASCAM DP-02CF makes recording so simple, affordable, and fun.
Can a digital recorder become a collector's item? Only if it's the TASCAM Portastud! Order one of these mislabeled recorders while they last!

I'm not a pro musician I am a hobbyist, so take this review as you will. Well, I'll start by saying the unit is heavy, but as a result, rugged. Not a pile of plastic like some others. The sound quality is good on everything I've recorded, and also no hum or noise for me so far. My last recorder only sampled at 32 KHz, so this may be a relative judgement. The unit lacks effects, but many similar units that have effects have half-*ssed effects anyway.CF cards are not the cheapest thing, if I ever buy a new board it WILL have a hard drive. CF cards fill up quick and then you either have to buy a new card or backup to a computer. Gets to be a pain. The interface is simple and can be learned in very little time, no huge learning curve. Some other units require a large time investment when all you want to do is lay down some tracks, this one does not. Sucks to let inspiration pass you by while you're trying to figure the interface out.I would recommend this unit for the recording/guitar hobbyist.

This thing is utter -junk-.First off, if you're wanting to use built-in effects, make sure that whatever bozo sells this to you understands that you -need- built in effects... this unit does -not- have such. Now, aside from that... NOISY.Whether TRS or XLR, the gain has to be cranked to the max, and of course, after that... noisy and distorted.I swear, Candid Camera must be waiting in the wings to see who buys this, and they probably have a hidden mini-camera attached to this unit to see our reactions at what a bad joke this machine is.

I had my husband buy this for me. It is so easy to use and is amazing at all it will do. I'm very happy with the quality of the sound. I am recording some of my old (10 years old) cassettes to this and putting them of CD and the sound is awesome. I would recommend to this product to anyone. We got the one that is mislabeled which has nothing to with how this product works.
A simple, straight forward unit. It's ease of use with good features, makes it a very enjoyable and easily used 8 track. For effects send, I use a boss ME-50 (with left and right outputs) and sometimes Compressor, and it returns perfectly. I am happy with it as my first proper recording set up.
I love this recorder. It has so many great featured for not a lot of bucks! I got mine 3 days ago and i have quickly learned the basic recording functions. 2 track recording simultaneously etc. I recommend this unit for any beginner in multitrack recording. Buy it!
I got this the other day - quickly worked out how to record on to the free 1Gb card. but after only a few songs can 't master any tracks as saying not enouh disk space. There is only 500Mb available as the other 500M is used for FAT partition - any ideas on how to solve this as there is now way you can do a dozen tracks with the 1Gb that I can see - also the tracks I did only have 2 inputs used as tests. Hmmmm
I purchased the Tascam Portastud for garage recording. I must of gotten a bad one. The Master Playback button did not work. I would laydown a track then could not listen to it. I called Tascam customer support and after holding for 25 minutes decided to ship it back for a refund. My opinion: if you get a good one you scored if not, you to will experience Portastud Let Down
I must have gotten the lemon cause my Portastud was a bust. Nothing worked properly. I went through the manual page by page to see if it was me or the product. After 6 hours, I decided that it was a pice of junk and returned the next day for a refund. Very disappointed in this product. I have other Tascam products that work great, but not this one. You get what you pay for.
Like all recording, it is hard to figure out at first then it all comes natural. I almost bought the more expensive model but I didnt have the money I like this model because it was realatively cheap. The sound quality is clean and it has 8 tracks of recording. I recommend for those who like simplicity and saving money.
I have been a recording musician for 25+ years and I have to say that from a cost/performance perspective the "Portastud" is by far the best multitrack recorder out there today. Very easy to operate and contrary to some reviews I beleive the manual was easy enough to understand if you have a basic knowledge of digital recording. The lack of effects is a non-issue, get a yamaha or lexicon MFX unit, you will be more pleased with the end result. This is not a full production studio in a box, but rather a very excellent and usable link in your home studios audio chain. I've done full productions on my unit with amazing results. Overall I couldn't be more pleased. I looked at alot of digital multitracks before I bought my "Portastud"...I'm glad I held out. Tascam rules again. Thanks

I have been a BOSS BR series user for years but gave up all my consoles for CPU recording earlier this year....I found myself missing the ease and convienence of a "stand alone" unit so I thought I have little to lose trying this Portastud. Let me tell you, for my money, Tascam has won me over big time! Very well constructed (The knobs are nice and smooth!) Great back-lit display!!....USB 2.0 gives me the best of both worlds (I can master and store on my PC)..I would recommend the use a good external mic-pre as the on board input may seem a liitle soft. This little beauty blew me absolutely away!! WHAT A GREAT UNIT & I still can't believe the price!!
