Compact, professional CD-quality recording in a portable, digital studio.

The DP-24 from TASCAM is a 24-track digital portastudio with solid state recording, an easy-to-read color LCD display, and channel strip controls that make the recording process simpler, so you can stay creative. A total of up to eight tracks can be recorded simultaneously at 24-bit/48kHz audio resolution, so you know you’re getting professional quality sound. There are a total of eight microphone inputs, each with combination XLR-1/4” jacks and phantom power. There's plenty of inputs for whatever your project is calling for, even enough to mic up an entire drum kit. Input processing like compression and limiting are available during recording, so you’ll be able to keep levels consistent. There are also multi-effects and a guitar amp simulation for use with the instrument-level input, that way you can track guitars straight into the DP-24 without the need to lug around amplifiers, especially if you’re on-the-go.

Once you are happy with your recording, each of the tracks can be viewed and mixed on the large color LCD display. The DP-24 features dependable mixing controls like 18 linear channel faders, a master fader, and a dozen channel strip encoders with dedicated controls for EQ, pan and effect sends, giving you complete hands-on control. There are two mixdown effects including reverb and chorus that are available, as well as a mastering effect that will have you polishing up your final mix in no time. Once finished, your final song can be transferred to computer over a fast USB connection or your tracks can be written directly to CD with the built-in CD-RW drive for instant mixdown and back-up options. That means you can go from recording, to mixing, and straight to CD without ever leaving the DP-24.

The sole reason I bought this unit was for demoing. I found it very frustrating to jot down ideas in a pro tools/console setting. Too much work plugging in all the outboard stuff just to mess around. The Tascam DP24 is perfectly suited to my needs. It does exactly enough stuff to get a quality demo out, quickly and enjoyably. I in turn have come to appreciate revisiting a semi-linear recording process. It's powerful, but not so powerful that you'll get lost in the mix for 3 days tweaking minutia. Awesome for songwritting and demos. You may even be able to keep a track or two.
Simple 3 way EQ on every track. Hi/Low Shelf, 1 Sweepable mid + Q. EQ quality is acceptable and is as expected. EQ works well enough in a "make it work" sort of way. You can also apply dynamics and FX/Amp models at input to be recorded.

The compressors sound and function fairly comically, but I'd rather have them than not (note there are not GR meters) . Amp models are limited to selecting Speaker size/Cabinet and are not great, but are functional. It is nice to be able to add effects from within the box.

Bouncing tracks is super easy, and helps justify tracks 13-24 being dedicated stereo tracks. You are alotted one fader group assignment and it works well to create and control a drum group.

I formatted a 16gig SD card to be used for the device. Got about 14.5g left after format. Unit tells me I've got 50+ hours of recording @ 16/44.1 with that memory. Not bad!
The AD shows when you've piled up 20 tracks recorded through them. It has a little upper-mid gnarly-ness that tends to be inherent with these standalone recorders. I'm curious how effective the mastering section Tascam has provided will be at eliminating some of this shrillness. To the units credit, it does sound better than my old Akai DPS16, or my friends older Tascam 2488.
The effects can add a lot of noise, but are good for illustrating an idea of how you'd like the final recording to be produced. The unit appears to be of sound construction, and looks pretty cool.
Cost per ease of use and functionality is spot on.

I use this product and I own a 2488 Neo.

Is beautiful, color screen, easy to use the EQ, but I tought that DP-24 was a upgrade for Neo but it is not. The only up are the 48K while Neo is 44K and the normalize function on mastering (which I do not recomend to do). The rest has the same as Neo but it is missing some important things found on Neo like DIGITAL I/O, option to assign effects and EQ PRE or POS on the channels strips (meanning record WET or DRY), DP-24 permit only up to 4 compressors to be used at same time while Neo permit up to 8. Neo has much more flexibility on the 255 virtual tracks which each can be moved to any real real track while DP-24 has 8 virtual track on each track, the only way to move to another track is copying, on other words, duplicating. And some others things.

On Neo I record from my synth and Voice processor to digital IN. On DP-24 only analogs inputs and outputs.

Don't fool yourself wondering that you can use USB as digital I/O. USB is just for tranfers files from DP-24 to/from PC after you tranfered from TASCAM disk format to FAT partition on the SD Card, same as NEO on Hard Disk, which takes a LONG time. I use the digital I/O to transfer tracks and MIXES to PC which is much faster than transfering via USB.

For the price Neo was much better option and I hope TASCAM will put it back for sale for those that need digital I/O. Today digital I/O is a very important thing.
This machine is great and a lot of features for live records but missing features for studio.

Comments about TASCAM DP-24 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

Now that I have had this machine for a few more months I would just like to add a few more comments. First of all it is probably best to get a higher capacity SD card, I found out the hard way that a 4 minute song using all the tracks will consume more than 2 GB of memory, the card they start you with is only 2 GB. It just would have been nice if they would have given you some indication in the manual about approximate memory usage but that's why I am putting it out there now so that the rest of you will know. The upper tracks are paired as stereo so essentially it's an 18 track machine for my needs, still not a big deal, enough for what I do. Probably one of the worst things (unless I am not smart enough to figure it out) is that you can only add effects at the source input and not on a track that has already been recorded. Making a CD from this machine seems overly complicated, fortunately I mix down to a dedicated CD recorder. Like others have stated this machine has a lot of features that you probably won't use, as far as just laying down tracks with good recording quality it does the job.

I really like the physical layout of the board. It is very easy to switch back and forth between windows. The instruction are very complete and easy to follow. Much easier to use then a on screen computer system. I have done a lot of recording with other people but this is my first time at the board. This made my recording much easier.

I didn't get this into my earlier review.

                THIS ITEM HAS NO WARRANTY.
I had to give the repair center, one hundred thirty nine big ones, before they would even look at my unit for repair. Then I am to be charged for all labor as well. Tascam only supplies parts for warranty work. They also do not pay any shipping costs.

here is the warranty from Tascam

Heads and disk drives are warranted for ninety (90) days from date of original purchase. Labor is warranted for ninety (90) days from date of original purchase.

This seems to be a decent multitrack recorder that will get the job done, but be warned that if you have a problem with it Tascam does not answer tech support emails. I have sent them 3 so far trying to resolve an issue with transferring files from the recorder to my computer and they have not responded to any of them. Not even a "sorry, we don't know the answer" which would be better than no reply at all. This is in no way Musican's Friends fault, they are a great company but I'm shocked at Tascam for not backing up their product. In my 3rd email I told Tascam that if nobody was willing to help me out I was posting a negative review. Still no response from them.

Comments about TASCAM DP-24 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I wrote a review for this when I first got it, 5 months ago and was happy to be able to record 8 channels at once but, out of the box it had problems with CD burning, and it kept powering itself off. Nothing really noticeable at first but the minor problems have drastically increased over 5 months. The on board effects caused me to have other recording issues so, I bypassed them all together and used a computer based program to add effects. And still I was OK working around that but, the problems have gotten much worse over 5 months, power shutting down, effects overflowing into other channels, not being able to turn them off and the unit is not usable at this point.
The sound on this machine just isn't as good as the previous Portastudio's I've owned. Very flat, no depth to it.
                  JUST A WARNING, I WISH I HADN'T BOUGHT THIS.

Being a person not born using computers, this is a challenge for me. I just want to put my music on a CD, not learn another instrument. I am sure there are functions I would use if I had the knowledge. At times the owner's manual confuses me. A person better versed in computer usage would not have a problem. The basic use is easy and I like it better than the smaller multi-track recorders I have.

Being used to working with a Tascam DP01, I am familiar with the ins and outs of tascam's recording process. What I wasn't prepared for was how powerful the DP-24 actually is. The manual is like most, nothing in an organized sequence to go from start to a finished product. You will rag the pages out flipping back and forth during your first recording. That being said, you will quickly get the hang of recording. I had a finished product in no time at all. I haven't gotten into the virtual stuff or used the copy/paste functions, but will learn as I continue working with it. This unit is light years above the DP-01. Full editing functions, mastering functions, the ability to cut a mastered CD, makes this an old school recording buff's dream. I will not comment on it's durability as I just received the unit, however, if you're looking for an alternative to Pro Tools or just want something for quick demo recording, this is the tool for it. One little down side, since this unit uses a SD memory card, quick rewind from recording can't be done as it has to write the information onto the card. If you can excuse that one small hiccup, you can have one powerful recording tool. Needless to say, I am thrilled with this recorder. One of my bands has a Tascam 2488 that we have use to record two CDs. I really like the sound of these units, which is why I wanted to upgrade to the DP-24. Thanks to MF, I was able to afford it. If you buy this, take your time and be patient and after the start up, you will be recording and making great sounding CDs. I think you will be happy with it. I am!
