OVERVIEW

32-Track digital PORTASTUDIO with full-color LCD.

The TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32 is one of the best and most affordable ways to remove the mind-numbing glow of the computer screen from personal recording. It's safe to say, that after decades of manufacturing and transforming Portastudios, TASCAM has revolutionized the series once again. Employing 8 combo 1/4" - XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power, 32 tracks (8 mono, 12 stereo) the ability to select between stereo and mono and an affluence of other key features, TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32 is an obvious choice for multi-channel home recording.

The last 12 faders are selectable between MONO and STEREO
The DP-32 has 12 selectable tracks between MONO or STEREO. These tracks provide more flexibility. For example, set to STEREO for recording synthesizer, or set to MONO when recording guitar or vocal. Not only that, you can create ideal settings for each track. (set #9 to #12 STEREO, then set #13 to #22 MONO) If all tracks are set to MONO the DP-32 becomes a 20-track multi track recorder.

21 faders eliminates layer structuring
The DP-32, even with the high number of tracks and features is one of the easiest multi-track recorders in the market to use. The DP-32 has 20 track-faders and one master fader. You can control any track with ease.

The 3.5" full-color LCD and the self-illuminated buttons increase visibility
The DP-32 has a 3.5" LCD screen and select self-illuminated buttons, making it easy to view your entire creative process. Some of the illuminated buttons include (SOURCE, SELECT, REC, MUTE).

12 rotary knobs linked to the LCD to help increase easy operation
The DP-32 has employed rotary knobs to control qualities such as EQ, Effect Send and other related features.

Utilizing SD/SDHC media ensures confident recording, free from shock due to loud sounds
The DP-32 adopted use of SD/SDHC media. SD/SDHC cards provide secure shock resistance due to the absence of any rotary mechanism. File format of the DP-32 is FAT 16 or 32. You can find the recorded files on your computer when connected via USB.

I recently purchased the Tascam DP-32 Portastudio mainly as a curiosity since I had read reviews it sounded better than a computer-based DAW. I've been recording, mixing and mastering songs using a computer based DAW since 1999 but I also wanted to expand my studio by being able to easily pack up a piece of equipment and take it to another site and record acts in remote locations and not have to worry about computer crashes and glitches So I wanted to record outside the box in live situations or recording acts in their rehersal/practice areas.

I performed some tests on the unit and the first time I heard the sound coming out of it I was extremely surprised. It gave me the warm fuzzies the first time I heard it and I'm a pretty picky customer.

I loaded up a jazzy song I've been working on which has good brass hits, walking-rhythmic drums, guitars, bass, and piano.

The first thing I noticed is good instrument separation in the playback and a good punchy feel to it as well.

I must say, yes, this unit does sound better than my computer-based DAW though this unit and a DAW would work well in any particular work flow.

You don't have to apply a lot of compression with this unit since it really produces a loud signal from the get-go. The song I did, I sparingly used some equalization on the individual instruments, and on the master, enough compression for blend and a touch more equalization on the master as well. I kicked out a CD from the unit and played it all over the place; my home computer, my living room surround system, a older boom box, a better mid-range boom box and my car stereo. Each case the sound was great for the particular equipment I tried it on.

The only knit-pick I have with the unit is that it's a bit time consuming entering a song name using the data wheel when creating a new song.

I'm starting to record my next album and the Tascam DP-32 Portastudio is going to be my new workhorse.

Comments about TASCAM DP-32 Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

First of all I've owned this Portastudio now for 10 months, and it seems as I keep using, I find more great features.

Tascam has a outstanding reputation in the industry for a really long time making this kind a portable music studio "workstation". It is modular, and would make for a outstanding system to record live albums and things like that because of it's design.

I currently use it in my room alongside my iMac on a slidable TV table in which it fits quite snugly. We are going to eventually build a table/desk for the computer and Portastudio.

      But on with it's features:

As a folksinger (aka a singer/songwriter) knowing that I have 32 tracks to work with is wonderful. A bit too much, but I expect to have it a long time, and to use with whenever I have a band. The sound quality is something beautiful, because it records in lossless WAV format it's basically as good as it can get for digital multitrack recording. The guitar effects on the DP-32 are great fun to play with when you plug in a electric or acoustic guitar. The reverb effect this Portastudio has is literally legendary to my friends because of it's nearly authentic fidelity. The idea of "send" effects is something I originally found quite unneeded, but after a while I know think it's a great way to gauge the power of the main effects. It's built like a tank, with a metal body, with hard plastic sides and buttons. The color display is very helpful and the way it displays things are very laid back and modern. So, that's about it. I originally wanted a reel-to-reel tape machine for authenticity, but I found it would be too much of a hassle. This is basically the 21st century tape machine, with impeccable quality in a market that is based around DAW's and other PC-related objects. I really enjoy this machine, and it does have a learning curve; but when you get it, you'll cherish it's features.

Comments about TASCAM DP-32 Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

The unit looks great out of the box. It has weight to it and feels sturdy and serious. I just started to learn to use the system and it is a good bit more complex than the 10 channel Zoom I have. I doubt I will use all of the functions and capability the unit offers but so far it will do the trick. The on board CD burner should make final mastering easier as it is designed to function with the board rather than patching to another peripheral unit. The negative thing I have to say is the instruction booklet reads like the proverbial stereo instructions and is a bit confusing. So far, I have to say this is a nice unit and do recommend it to anyone who wants a powerful self contained traditional recorder with modern enhancements.

I'm a beginner and maybe someday I'll outgrow this unit, but for my needs I doubt it. In one day I accomplished more than I had in three years on my computer based set up. Granted, I have a lot of irons in the fire and never truly devoted myself to learning my computer set up, but just learning to record one spoken vocal track was an all day ordeal. On my first afternoon with my Tascam I recorded 3 tracks in stereo and burned a CD of them. It makes the process fun so I WANT to make time for learning.
